To take 4 year old for a hair cut at hairdressers?

Do people take their small children (girl) to hairdressers or just cut it themselves? She needs a cut but I’ve always just trimmed it. Thinking of booking an appointment but not sure if it’s a waste ..?

Yes, the only time I've ever cut 5yo DD's hair myself was during the first lockdown. This was only because she begged me to as she saw me doing DH and DS's. I made a complete mess of it and was relieved to get it fixed when hairdressers opened back up again Grin

Do you book In a cut and blow dry or just a dry cut?

My 3 year old is going to the hairdresser next week for her haircut. Just a dry cut she has

Findahouse21 · 15/12/2020 21:57

I take dd to one where you can just walk in

raspberryk · 15/12/2020 21:58

Has she never had a hair cut?!

I take my dd after she’s had a shower and they cut it damp,or they just spritz it with water so I just book a cut.

Whitewhite · 15/12/2020 22:01

Honestly she’s awful and will refuse a hair cut so to save the embarrassment I’ve always just trimmed it. But think I’ll take her and hope for the best. Thank you.

Most hair dressers have specific cuts for young kids. My local one charges £5 for under 6s then £10 for 6-10s.

I booked myself and my youngest in for an appointment at the same time so we can have a pamper day, maybe try that. I think the hairdresser helps, mine is amazing with my girls and usually makes it special for them by putting French plaits or something in. My last hairdresser didn't really pay attention to them and they were more likely to play up.

I have never cut my children’s hair - they are 14. I don’t trust myself to make a mess.

inquietant · 15/12/2020 22:16

I cut all my children's hair until about 8 or 9. They looked gorgeous and why waste the money and time?

SarahAndQuack · 15/12/2020 22:18

Yes, totally normal. We started taking DD when she was two and a bit. She was born with a troll mop of hair (literally like those troll dolls!), and so we'd been trimming it from when she was tiny, and at some point it was just obvious it'd be less stressful from the professionals.

We go somewhere cheap for all of us, so before lockdown we'd book in for the three of us for a trim every two months, and it was great because she got so relaxed. It's been a bit of a learning curve under covid!

My dd is six and she has only had hair cut at a salon once in her life. Mind you, she chopped a fair bit off with kitchen sissors when she was about 3 so it's been years to grow that out. I couldn't face getting it sorted at the time

My hairdresser loved me taking my daughter when she was wee.

Pipandmum · 15/12/2020 22:29

They'll just spray it with water then cut it.

TheSmallAssassin · 15/12/2020 22:34

We used to take ours to a specialist children's hairdresser when they were little, they had screens in front of the seats (or motorbikes, or other shaped seats) and they chose a DVD to watch while their hair was being cut. It was ace. Is there anything like that in your town? It was a bit pricier probably, but worth it!

mumwon · 15/12/2020 22:34

`dd1 was born with full head of hair - enough that nurses came in to have a look - full fringe etc - so I took her for her first haircut aged 6 weeks (yep weeks) when I had my hair cut -
