To cringe when people say...

Dalmore30 · 14/12/2020 23:39

Food being described as ‘beautiful’, ‘gorgeous’ or ‘stunning’ makes me wants to vomit.

I have to bite my tongue when people say ‘fry off’ rather than just fry.

And the word ‘secondment’ makes my skin crawl!

Is anyone with me on these?

Tbh it doesnt really bother me. I'm not that judgemental when it comes to people's vocals- or at least I try not to be.

Newmumatlast · 15/12/2020 02:17

Vocab not vocals haha

CheetasOnFajitas · 15/12/2020 02:17

@OldGreyBoots

I have an irrational dislike of "lush" in some situations. I don't mind it in reference to food, or to describe, say, woodland, but in other situations ("that programme was lush") it just annoys me! Feels wrong Grin
That one is Gavin and Stacey’s fault! They also say it a lot in Bristol.
Tezza1 · 15/12/2020 02:18

@iswhois the American wine labelled "Two buck Chuck" would probably proudly label itself as plonk.

80sColourfulChristmas · 15/12/2020 02:20

I can't stand "Delicious" makes me cringe so much!

ElGuardiandenoche · 15/12/2020 02:21

I’ve noticed on a lot of cooking shows recently that the word hero is being used to describe a part of the food they’ve cooked. IE “we want you to hero the asparagus in this dish.” “I’ve hero’d the chocolate in the mouse.”

Drives me up the wall...FOOD. CANNOT. BE. A. HERO!!!😡🤬 sorry for the rant ☺️

In a similar vein to “of an evening” I am not a great fan of “at the minute” to mean “at the moment” but it seems to be all the rage- eg “he’s not working at the minute”.

Where I'm from 'at the minute' is definitely the default wording for that sentence. At the moment would be more unusual.

Yes, I am sure it has always been common in some places but it seems to have gone nationwide.

My fourteen year old daughter begins nearly every sentence with “So....” and addresses me as “Hey...”
Her twin brother sounds like a bawling, grunting calf because he has begun speaking in the abbreviated language of text messages (I think) and his voice is breaking.
I am very tempted to asking the orthodontist to accidentally wire their braces shut for the Christmas period.

fullofhope100 · 15/12/2020 03:15

@Bahhhhhumbug

This newish craze of putting a 'So' at the srart of every answer to a question. On a quiz show for example 'What do you do for a living?' 'So.... I'm a twat nurse/estate agent/' Host then says 'Oh really..... and what does that entail exactly?'...... 'So.....' grrrrrrr.
YES! Also, "I'm obsessed with"... Ffs!
PattyPan · 15/12/2020 03:20

I hate pan fry. Similarly, oven baked. Where else would you bake something?

I always think this too! Also, hand-cooked crisps. What does that even mean? Confused

CringeMinge · 15/12/2020 03:20

@Noidontwantmootard

Cringe is a word I would never use. It rhymes with minge. Grin
Thank you for inspiring my new MN name Grin
165EatonPlace · 15/12/2020 03:25

The word "Super" hate it.
"Challenge" No. Its a PROBLEM . Why shy away from the truth?
"Reached out" drives me nuts

@justilou1: Your post has made me LOL Grin

Watching an American food show and everything is ‘[ingredient] forward’. For example, a dish isn’t ‘herby’, it’s ‘herb forward’. Does my head in. The other one is ‘flavour profile’. Just say flavour! And lastly, when the contestants explain their dishes they say things like “in front of you is the blah blah blah”. No one just says “I’ve cooked blah blah blah”.

Why am I still watching this show?!

Stillfunny · 15/12/2020 03:32

The overuse of " uncomfortable" or " not comfortable " . There are so many other phrases you could use instead.
It makes me think of people squirming like they want to go to the toilet or else thumping pillows on bed.
Just me then , I guess !

sotiredofthislonelylife · 15/12/2020 03:37

Over the past couple of years, I have heard lots of people say ‘so fun’ 😡 - NO!!! It’s ‘so much fun’ or the shortened form ‘such fun’.........
Also, people using the singular word ‘less’ eg. less jobs, instead of the plural word, ‘fewer’.

Did anyone else read it like this at first?

RosesAndHellebores · 15/12/2020 03:49

Myself and yourself. What's wrong with me and you? As for I, myself Xmas Angry.

I think it's because they don't know when to use I and me.

Toilenstripes · 15/12/2020 03:53

I am sat.

Are you now? You’re not “sitting?”

PandemicAtTheDisco · 15/12/2020 04:12

Sassy.

I loathe the word.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 15/12/2020 04:22

Jam packed with flavour. Drives me mad!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/12/2020 04:22

The word awesome used for anything that somebody likes.

I did challenge a girl at work over its use saying, if you use the word 'awesome' to describe your sandwich (she had just done so) what would you say if you witnessed an active volcano or a tsunami?
She thought for a moment and then said "I'd say, that's f*cking amazing"
I think she won that round.

NaturesEnd · 15/12/2020 04:29

People who say on accident.

SingleWontMingle · 15/12/2020 05:14

"Cringe" being used as an adjective makes me cringe. It's cringeworthy.
