Can I claim as a single person if I am living in the family home ( awaiting for it to be sold so I can move out ) but ex and I are no longer together, working isn't an option at the moment

If you are no longer sharing finances, I think you can.

Haveacrackingday · 14/12/2020 08:15

I should have said that I am on the mortgage too

Surely your finances haven't changed yet though?

You will have to demonstrate that you lead entirely separate lives. That means no laundry, cooking, separate bedrooms, no hanging out on the sofa watching telly etc. You should have separate bank accounts so if a joint account now close it and set up your own account into which your benefits will be paid. You can pay each other for 50% of bills, mortgage etc every month.

Yes you can, it's not as straightforward, but do put in a claim for UC. And. if you reconcile dont forget to update. them.

Assuming there is equity in the property once it is sold you may not then be entitled to benefits if you have more than £16k cash.

Eh what? How do you demonstrate you don’t do his laundry or hang out on the sofa? You can’t be making stuff up and posting it 😂

It’s not made up. Those are the rules. You can be investigated. You can be expected to have an advisor in your home if you are a claimant. Said advisor can draw conclusions from what they see.

TwoBlueFish · 14/12/2020 08:35

You can apply get Universal Credit, if you’re single and over 25 then you should get the standard allowance which is £409.89 per month (that’s assuming you don’t have capital/savings of more than £6k). You won’t get help towards the mortgage.

If you have worked and paid national insurance recently you may be able to claim New Style JSA/ESA instead of UC.

If you’re not able to work due to illness or disability then you could look into claiming PIP (Personal independence payment)

Well, you’re clearly not going to be doing his laundry or hanging out on the sofa if an advisor is in, however even if you do. It doesn’t mean you’re a couple.

@Bluntness100 I do this for a living. They do check applicants who don’t live alone as it’s an obvious route to fraud
