We are usually a full-on big roast a day type family over Christmas? Hoping to take it easy this year. Any tips for nice treaty food?

Interested to see what people have on Christmas Day that’s not a roast. I have no idea!

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 13/12/2020 20:26

I’ve done a baked ham for several years now. I do a brown sugar/peach glaze and it’s delicious! Much quicker to cook than a turkey.

We’re in the US so my lot don’t want turkey again so soon after Thanksgiving.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/12/2020 20:29

Do you mean treats or as a main event?
Treats are lobster and then cheese😁
Main event. Duck (salt, pepper, caraway, slow roast). I cannot stand turkey!

I suggested on another thread not so long ago for OP to look at what people eat around the world and have international Christmas😁 Maybe you would enjoy that? If you don't fancy traditional one, go for anything you can have some fun with.

Bluntness100 · 13/12/2020 20:32

Do you mean you have a large roast meal every single day?

Beef Wellington. Seafood linguine (so easy to do) fish (whatever type you fancy) with samphire and what we type of veg /potatoes you like. Again very easy to do.

Waveysnail · 13/12/2020 20:33

Love stollen. But its def a sweet treat not a meal lol

Crossandcrochety · 13/12/2020 20:36

@SchrodingersImmigrant
Both really! I’m fed up of cooking endless roasts, but also looking for alternative ideas for lighter meals/snacks. As it will just be us and the children, it’s an opportunity to break Christmas eating habits!

Camembert and nice bread.

KitKat1985 · 13/12/2020 20:39

I love a baked camembert with fresh bread and cranberry sauce.

cherrypiepie · 13/12/2020 20:40

@AmICrazyorWhat2 the peach ham sounds AMAZING! how do you make it please?

We always do a huge ham on Christmas Eve and have fresh ham sandwiches on Christmas Eve with stuffing and apple sauce abs then the rest of the ham for the week and in a ham pie and freeze a bit too.

Also treat food would be pate and nice posh butter and pudding and trays of party food that just goes in the oven.

And chocolate crisps cheese and nuts abs York fruits! Xmas Smile

ImnotCarolineHirons · 13/12/2020 20:50

Pate
Huge cheeseboard and posh crackers
M&S big cranberry pork pie
Baked Camembert
THE most amazing macarons from the french deli
Any kind of posh party food really.

MrBloomsLeftVeg · 13/12/2020 20:53

We've had curries picnic and tapas food, soup and sandwiches on a walk, bread and cheese last year in France. Whatever takes our fancy. This year we are taking a picnic to the beach if it stays dry

Pheasantplucker2 · 13/12/2020 20:55

M&S party food, I love a bubbly tea in front of the TV.

We're trying to move away from Turkey this year - only OH is a fan. I have suggested we get a small turkey crown and then a duck or goose, as I fancy trying goose without the pressure of catering for the masses. Like the sound of the slow cooked carraway duck upthread.

We are also getting some free range venison, so will do venison stew. Will get a salmon for one day.

Love a baked camembert, vol au vents are a guilty 80's pleasure, home made cheese straws and dips, a massive cheeseboard with port and Christmas cake.

Having said all this, one child is autistic and has a very limited diet, so will be eating pizza on Christmas day, one is an on off pescatarian, and one is gluten intolerant, so it is tricky to do food that suits everyone. X

Pheasantplucker2 · 13/12/2020 20:55

Picky tea not bubbly, no idea where that came from

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 13/12/2020 21:07

@cherrypiepie. I’ll post it later tonight, need to retrieve ye ancient recipe book that my Dad gave me years ago! I only use it occasionally.

@Bluntness100. We do seafood linguine on Christmas Eve, it’s so easy and yummy. Plus my DH is great with seafood ( and I’m happy to let him cook).🤣

cherrypiepie · 13/12/2020 21:09

@AmICrazyorWhat2 thank you! I love fruit and meat!

ttigerlilly · 13/12/2020 21:10

Cheeeese Grin with crackers and pickles
Anything chocolatey
M&S creme brûlée liqueur
I just adore Christmas dinner in general! So it's always a treat.

Although I have felt slightly more limited at Christmas time since I stopped eating meat nearly 5 years ago... I used to love a prawn ring. And ham. Ahhh and pigs in blankets Blush

But I will be having a delicious veggie "roast joint" which I always thoroughly enjoyXmas Grin

OhWhyNot · 13/12/2020 21:15

A selection of cheese, crackers and pickles in the evening with lots of lovely shortbread

I like Boxing Day dinner best, cold meat and stuffing with pickled shallots and fresh bread

Go for it. Go wild! Enjoy yourself, that's what Christmas are about!

Nuie · 13/12/2020 21:19

My treat is nuts. Fancy nuts.

myhobbyisouting · 13/12/2020 21:27

Why are you cooking endless roasts?!

myhobbyisouting · 13/12/2020 21:27
