Personal comments about weight

What would your advice be if a colleague made personal comments about your weight/size at work?

A colleague said they thought I had gained weight as in the past I was much thinner. Then asked if I was pregnant 😲

My abdomen may have looked rounder due to my period and multiple pregnancy. I am usually a 14-16 dress size, so I don't think I am huge for my height.

I felt this unprovoked and unkind comment upset me. However, I tried not to show at the time. I'm not sure what to do next or just say nothing.

Tell them they're being extremely inappropriate in the workplace. How bloody rude of them!

MassiveSalad · 13/12/2020 19:32

Are you serious?! You can't possibly think it is OK for someone to say this to you! It doesn't matter if you have gained eleventy billion stone in one single week. And for this to be said to you by a colleague of all people! A colleague doesn't get to pass comment on your body. In my opinion, nobody gets to pass comment but a colleague!! If he/she does it again then do not hesitate to tell them to fuck right off and never pass comment on your body ever again!!

AllGongNoDinner · 13/12/2020 19:33

You should tell them to move away from you because their breath smells

MassiveSalad · 13/12/2020 19:33

I know I used far too many exclamation marks but I am raging on your behalf.

MunchBunchYoghurt · 13/12/2020 19:33

Jesus what a cheeky fucker!!!!!

Some people must have no shame/ no filter whatsoever.

Alittlelessthanuseless · 13/12/2020 19:35

I’d have had to try very hard not to reply....

“Have you got uglier? I swear in the past you were better looking?”

What a twat. It’s completely out of order to comment on anybody’s weight!!

madcatladyforever · 13/12/2020 19:37

I've had this in the past before a big weight loss and I've totally ignored them as if nobody said anything and gone off to do something else.
They looked extremely awkward......good.

thefirstmrsrochester · 13/12/2020 19:43

I think ‘get to fuck’ would cover it. Someone lacking so vastly in social awareness isn’t worth anything more.

notanothernamechangemother · 13/12/2020 19:49

Thanks. I was starting to think I was being over sensitive by being upset.

Unfortunately I can't tell them to fuck off as I'd probably be in trouble myself.

The colleague then compared my body to another colleague and said 'oh you're ok' to them but apparently I am not.

My self esteem has taken a hammering after this. It wasn't good before 😕

The moment has passed I think. It was very rude but the time to put them right was when they said it.
I once had some one (not direct boss, but someone senior to me) say he 'goodness you've put on weight'. He was notorious for saying inappropriate things. Someone who overheard said 'well that's what happens when you are pregnant (I was about six months)'.
Next time just look them in the eye and say 'you really think making comments about my appearance is appropriate? Because how I look is not your concern so keep your opinions to yourself'.

gavisconismyfriend · 13/12/2020 20:35

“I’m always interested to know why people make hurtful remarks. Why did you say that about my weight?”

AcornAutumn · 13/12/2020 20:37

“ The colleague then compared my body to another colleague and said 'oh you're ok' to them but apparently I am not.”

Report. They have absolutely no boundaries and won’t stop till they’re given a clear order to stop.

Calmandmeasured1 · 13/12/2020 20:58

I wouldn't say anything unless they comment again. If they do, I would just say that I don't remember asking them for comments on my personal appearance.
