to wonder what the point is in Christmas cards for people you speak to or see regularly

You have wished them Happy Christmas.
You've asked what they are doing over Christmas. How their family are.
Etc

So why send a card with a design on and wish them Happy Christmas in the card as well?

What am I missing?

You can't put speaking on the fireplace mantel😁

DappledThings · 13/12/2020 16:03

Yeah, I don't get it. DH and his family write them to each other and exchange in person on Christmas Day. I found that massively weird the first Christmas we spent together.

It's a bit like Facebook likes to show people who come to your house how many people send you cards Grin

Well. Not this year🙈
I like to look at them. I also like to guess who are the cards from before looking. Fun game. Everyone has a different style.

I don’t get the point of Christmas cards to anyone tbf. Haven’t sent one since 2005. We don’t live in Victorian times any more, we don’t have to rely on this method these days.

katy1213 · 13/12/2020 16:08

When they first came out, they were intended for people you didn't see often - and that was pretty much the case even when I was a child. Now, as with everything else Christmassy, it has escalated.
Except with people like me who can't be arsed!

My DH’s family do the same. DH even gives me a Christmas card every year which I find very odd!

YANBU. Such a waste of time/effort/paper. Only send to people you won't get to see.

KittenCalledBob · 13/12/2020 16:12

I agree OP. I do send cards but only to people I don't see often.

Trinacham · 13/12/2020 16:13

Nobody comes to my house (except family.. who i wouldn't brag to!) And I don't get that many cards anyway.. but I still like to display my cards. I guess it's about feeling loved too Smile

BreakfastOfWaffles · 13/12/2020 16:13

I suppose you could say that about any card really. Why send a birthday card when you can text? Or why send a good luck card or a get well soon?

That's very true.

Does a verbal good luck mean more or less than a card saying good luck in?

Perhaps it depends on the recipient? Some people might value a card more than a text, or others vice versa.

ancientgran · 13/12/2020 16:19

My neighbours have never been very nice, very white area and the shock of my not white husband moving in was more than they could conceal. They all send us a card every Christmas and I feel obliged to do the same. This year I've decided I'm not doing it, they don't like us, don't want us here, aren't nice to us but once a year the 8 houses in our cul de sac send us Christmas greetings. I just can't be bothered any more.

Nonamesavail · 13/12/2020 16:20

I love them. I do not have fb so its nice to send something personal.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/12/2020 16:37

I’ve no idea. We do the bar minimum as seems a waste of resources and many can’t be recycled because of glitter etc. They make everywhere look cluttered around the house so don’t tend to put them on display even if sent.

MrsDThomas · 13/12/2020 16:37

My friend sends one to her husband. WHF for?

MirandaWest · 13/12/2020 16:43

I send them to people I don’t see regularly. When I was growing up we gave them to close family members so that’s what I still do.

MrsDonnelly · 13/12/2020 17:25

My MIL always gives us one. I find it very strange. I’m not a fan and hate them cluttering up the house. I only send them to one or two elderly relatives who would take huge offence to not receive one. Bah humbug😂

cologne4711 · 13/12/2020 17:30

Getting rid of cards which are a weird size or shape, which you don't feel comfortable putting in the post, or which will need a large letter stamp?

😂😂😂😂😂 best comment

Now really, I only send cards to people who live in a different city or abroad.

user1493494961 · 13/12/2020 17:48

I agree with you OP.

Ghostlyglow · 13/12/2020 17:57

YANBU. I've given up with them. WFH now but was always astounded how many people sent them to each other at work.

JovialNickname · 13/12/2020 23:07

Because it's nice to show people through your actions that they mean something to you. Words though lovely are not quite the same Smile
