Yes.. IABU by posting in here, but this is purely for traffic, so apologies in advance for that

I'm looking for some help in terms of a recipe; my gran always used to do whiskey sauce to have with Christmas pudding, and unfortunately with her attitude to cooking/the kitchen (ex teacher and always right) I took less interest and notice than I should have done.

Mum has no recollection of it either, and I am desperate to give my grandad something good this Christmas.

Gran has dementia, is currently in hospital, which i know will lead to further deterioration in the dementia; I asked her a couple of months ago and she cannot remember.

She came up with water, flour and whiskey at the end, but nothing else...

I am unable to find anything akin to it online - they all seem to want butter, eggs or cream...which this sauce didnt have.

To look at, it was just like a thicker whiskey really - sauce like but thinner than custard, same colour as whiskey.

I've exhausted googling, and I'm hoping that someone here can help out with some knowledge...

Please help me make my grandad's christmas, and hopefully grans if she makes it out of hospital..

My late Irish MIL's recipe sounds very similar. I have it written down by hand in my recipe book. It's thinner than custard and the colour of pale whiskey. It's so easy to make. I think the sherry is optional but it adds some sweetness.

Here goes:

4oz/100g butter
3 dessertspoons sugar
3 teaspoons cornflour
A cup of cold water
Whiskey & sherry to taste.

Gradually blend cornflour with water until it thickens. Make it quite thick as it will thin down when you add the alcohol at the end.

Put into a saucepan with the butter and sugar and bring to the boil, stirring all the time.

Lower the heat & add whiskey and sherry to taste. You can reheat, but don't let it boil.

The one I found is very similar to the one DramaAlpaca has shared. It's from frugalhausfrau.

The BBC Food has a nice recipe for Classic Brandy Sauce, you can just use whisky instead of brandy. The method is simple to follow for this traditional Christmas sauce.

I would have thought that a white sauce with butter, milk, flour or cornflour, and some whiskey and sugar is what you need. Or maybe even just milk, cornflour, sugar and whiskey.

Custard powder is basically flavoured cornflour and you need about 25 to 30 g of custard powder, a tablespoon or so of sugar to a pint of milk. That should give you an Idea of quantities.

Or I think you can get packet whiskey or brandy sauce in the supermarket, probably near the custard powder etc.

DM always makes a brandy sauce which would work with whiskey. She heats milk and cornflour, whisking all the time. No idea of quantities but I would imagine the same ratio as if you were making custard with tinned powder. She adds an indecent amount of sugar and a generous glug of brandy. No butter or any other fat. Simple but lush and my best friend loved it last Christmas!

@BarbaraofSeville Apologies, I've just repeated what you typed an hour ago! That'll teach me to RTFT Grin

🤔🤔

I've had a conversation with mum and she doesnt remember anything like butter or milk being in it.. which sadly rules out the recipes you've kindly all posted...

Thank you for all the replies/suggestions of recipes - I will have to give some of them a go to try and find an alternative I think...
