To despise Face Time (light hearted)?

Caramel81 · 13/12/2020 11:33

My family insist on only communicating via Face Time at the moment and I really bloody hate it!
I hate the invasion of privacy and I’m such an antisocial person as it is.
I’ve told them I don’t like it but they just roll their eyes and joke about how miserable I am.
I also have a couple of friends who only ever want to Face Time instead of phoning or texting.
Please tell me I’m not alone in my hatred for it? (This is lighthearted btw and I know it’s a good way for some people to stay in contact with loved ones during these Covid times)

I'm with you on this, my cousin wanted to facetime me when I was in hospital in labour!! Do fuck off!! I dont even want to talk to you on the phone in normal circumstances let alone in that situation!!

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/12/2020 11:40

Same. I hardly ever use it, I don’t want or need to see someone’s face when we’re on the phone.

Takeoutyourhen · 13/12/2020 11:40

It’s when people expect instant engagement from young children on FaceTime that annoys me and the emotional manipulation (like faux crying, generally making upset noises) that follows if they are just too knackered to have a phone thrust in front of them. They are not performing animals!

Hahaha88 · 13/12/2020 11:44

I don't feel comfortable most of the time on video calls and I don't feel I need to see a face to talk to the person

Levatrice · 13/12/2020 11:51

I hate them. 100% always ignore unplanned ones as well 😂

HitthatroadJack · 13/12/2020 11:54

I think it's quite nice to see the face of the people you are talking to.
Unless you make a habit of calling from the loo, there's nothing that you need to hide.

As long as it's friends and family only, just normal people who would just as well come for a drink or a weekend, I like it.

it's better than the phone for children too

Littlefish · 13/12/2020 12:00

I'm really missing seeing people, so I like to have a catch up on FaceTime. It's also been brilliant for checking on my parents who are both shielding.

thecatsthecats · 13/12/2020 12:47

Of my sister is reading this...

For the love of God, stop putting my nephew on video chat. I'd rather talk to you for five minutes than have fifteen minutes of broken conversation whilst you randomly point the phone at my nephew and tell me "he was doing this earlier", whilst he gives me a dead stare.

Caramel81 · 13/12/2020 14:42

Glad I’m not the only one who hates it. Christmas Day will probably involve about 5 different face time chats with various family members and I just find it utterly tedious

I absolutely hate it .I cannot concentrate on the conversation with peoples heads popping up everywhere .When my parents who are in their 80's are on they are invariably fiddling with something or trying to stand the iPad up .Drives me bonkers .I have switched to Whats app.

HitthatroadJack · 13/12/2020 14:49

I have switched to Whats app.

I am honestly curious why whatsapp video calls would be any different than facetime ones?

Ragwort · 13/12/2020 14:52

How can people 'insist', surely you just so 'no thanks' - I've ever FaceTimed in my life and prefer it that way.

Caramel81 · 13/12/2020 15:00

@Ragwort I think it’s because that’s the only way my family communicate together when not face to face so I would be seen to be the party pooper. My little nieces always want to see me on face time too and would be upset if I refused. I’ve already told them all I don’t like it and they just joke that I’m being silly and still continue to face time me whenever they want to chat

@HittheroadJack My family is scattered all over the world so the cost of telephone calls comes into play especially for my parents who always then want to FaceTime because it is free . So WhatsApp is a good alternative for us and basically just a telephone call.

HitthatroadJack · 13/12/2020 18:02

but that's where I am confused, a video call with whatsapp works out the same as a Facetime?

Unless you mean they don't use the video option.

pinkbalconyrailing · 13/12/2020 18:04

yanbu
I keep my camera switched off mostly.

BlueThistles · 13/12/2020 18:14

I have it set to OFF in my settings... I loath video calls.. and phone calls tbh.. I literally don't like my time being monopolised by someone wanting to talk on the phone.. I'm a texter.. I'm much happier texting people.. ☺️

mynameiscalypso · 13/12/2020 18:16

I think a pre-arranged FaceTime is just about tolerable. If someone randomly FaceTimed me to chat, there's no way I'd answer.

HemlockStarglimmer · 13/12/2020 18:31

Oh god! Horrible invasion of privacy. All my in-laws FaceTime. I tolerate it because I love them very much. I've told my husband off many a time when he's swung the camera in my direction and I'm not dressed and/or my hair's a state.

ttigerlilly · 13/12/2020 18:39

I only FaceTime my mum and sister so they can see my son and I love watching him smile at them Smile but I never really used it pre-motherhood
