To buy another Christmas Tree because ours has already died

Thereluctantstepmother · 13/12/2020 08:00

I bought a spruce Christmas tree two weeks ago from B&M and it stopped taking much water after a couple of days even though I sawed the bottom of the trunk off.
You only have to look at it and the needles drop. It looks all thin and droopy already and we’re nowhere near Christmas!
The tree is the best anti depressant I’ve had in a long time after this strange year but it would feel a bit extravagant to throw it out and start again!
On the other hand I like to keep it up til New Years eve so it’s going to be bare by then!
Also, does anyone have any tips on spotting newer ones when you go to the shop?
Thanks.

Don’t buy from b&m

AlwaysCheddar · 13/12/2020 08:02

And definitely get another!

lockdownbreakdown · 13/12/2020 08:05

Mine started to die after a week! All truning brown and drooping . I went back and complained and got a new one for free. A christmas tree should really be good for four weeks in my opinion.

I told my dc that we'd put the old artificial one up earlier than usual this year to test how bad our new cars would be with it. Then get a heavily discounted real tree a couple of days before Xmas (we've had a real tree the last few years)
Cats haven't bothered with tree at all. But I'm not sure I can be bothered to take all the decs off and start again! Might keep the kids entertained as I expect we will all be about bored if not visiting family etc.
So yes. Wait until the final few days to get a v cheap tree.

Thereluctantstepmother · 13/12/2020 08:06

I would take it back but I don’t have my receipt so 🤷‍♀️

Definitely get another. The ones with the longer needles drop less than the short needles.

I think it's a different kind of fir tree. Norman fir or Douglas fir drop less needles than the spruce. They do cost a bit more unfortunately

BakedTattie · 13/12/2020 08:17

Spruce drop their needles. You need a fur (Norwegian or Douglas fur) tree, they don’t drop needles.

BakedTattie · 13/12/2020 08:18

*fur = fir

Chailatte20 · 13/12/2020 08:18

Nordmaan fir from a garden centre or an actual Christmas tree farm.

Trees need at least a litre, if not more, of water a day.

WitchFindersAreEverywhere · 13/12/2020 08:23

I always buy a 7’ fir, and it lasts a month in a cool room with barely any needle drop. But it comes from a local farm, so it’s as fresh as possible.
I’d definitely buy another one, I love a decent Christmas tree, and I’d be much less festive without one..

OfTheNight · 13/12/2020 08:25

Go to a proper Christmas tree farm. Ours was cut in front of us. Xmas trees need about 1.5 litres of water a day. Ours is 7ft and takes just over that a day. Plus we keep it at the cooler end of the room - by the window, away from the radiator.

Hazelmazel · 13/12/2020 08:27

Also remember a dried out tree is a major fire hazard -
So for that reason alone I'd swap it either for an artificial one or a new fresh one.

TheRubyRedshoes · 13/12/2020 08:39

Yes! We did the whole thing again about 2 days before Xmas! I got my money back though

Lighingupthesky · 13/12/2020 08:40

I bought a tree on 27th Nov, £14.99 about 6 feet from Aldi, only left outside for a day cut the bottom off out it into the Krinner with water, it's still looking fantastic. It's a Norwegian fir. I gave up after many years of buying g from a local garden centre, prices last year were just greedy.

Aldi tree has Very green thick branches no sign of any drooping at all, and it's in the kitchen not to far from a radiator.

Your should of lasted longer, did you pay by card? Will you not have a recipt. I would if you can get another tree, you don't want a sad bald tree over Christmas!

Lighingupthesky · 13/12/2020 08:41

Sorry for typos! Fat fingers and phone

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/12/2020 08:44

We just got one from ikea £29 plus a £20 voucher in the new year. I thought they'd all be small but ours is bushy and massive. So if if feels extravagant to get another at that price it's a bit less so.

Goldenhedgehogs · 13/12/2020 09:00

Lidl also have nordman fir trees 17.99 if you can afford it just buy another. It's been a rubbish year and life is too short to daily feel sad while looking at your tree!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 13/12/2020 09:07

When the children were small we had a tree that didn't survive a week. We stripped the decorations on the 23rd and I spent the morning of Christmas Eve running round town searching for a replacement!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/12/2020 09:08

If it was a Norway spruce, they drop needles very easily. When we used to have one of those, we wouldn’t put it up until about a week before Christmas, or even less. It would never last otherwise. And that was despite lopping a bit off the bottom and keeping it in water.

Yes, if I could afford it, I’d chuck it and get another.

Bagamoyo1 · 13/12/2020 09:10

Why do people buy cut Christmas trees? Obviously they’re going to die - well, aren’t they dead already once they’ve been cut? Just get a tree in a pot, with roots - it’ll last for ever. And from what I’ve seen, the cost is the same.

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/12/2020 09:17

The cost is absolutely not the same and many people don't have outside space for them 11 months of the year.
elsaesmeralda · 13/12/2020 09:23

Mine is dry as a bone. Got it from the same farm place as I did last year, the last one lasted a good 4 weeks but this one has been two weeks and can't see it lasting til Xmas 🙄 no way am I getting another though

ivfbeenbusy · 13/12/2020 09:25

Same thing happened to mine last year except mine was from a dedicated Xmas tree farm and not cheap. To be honest I don't think they are capable of withstanding more than 2 weeks inside with the heating on? We got ours early December last year and by Boxing Day I'd put it outside as the needle dropping was driving me crazy. If you really want real don't get it until mid December.

Oysterbabe · 13/12/2020 09:29

It was only a 10er, get another. We splashed out on a realistic fake this year because I just can't be bothered with the hassle of real anymore and we wanted to put it up a bit earlier.

Dahlietta · 13/12/2020 09:31

Don’t buy from b&m

This.

If you really want real don't get it until mid December.

And this.

But yes to getting another one!
