To think Amazon is overrated?

SugarCanes · 12/12/2020 22:18

I keep getting Amazon vouchers for Xmas and birthdays. And to be honest, I can never find anything I want so I end up spending it on presents for other people.

I don't buy DVDs - I have streaming services so no need. I don't buy music either and never have the time to read these days.

As for toiletries and household things etc, it's often more expensive on Amazon that it is in the supermarket or shops. I have bought some clothing bits in the past and it was always awful quality.

I don't understand the fuss?

@MereDintofPandiculation

Please support your local independent bookshop over Amazon. I would if I had one.
It's probably because of Amazon that most places don't.

I'm torn over Amazon - I use it a lot but I hate hate hate what it - and supermarkets selling everything else too - has done to the High Street. Every time I order something from them I feel a complete hypocrite.

olderthanyouthink · 13/12/2020 11:31

Last Amazon purchases

A book
Citric acid
Net curtail rod
Command hooks
Sewing needles
Moth trap
Earphones
Toy animals for DD
Balloons
Speaker
Cleaning brushes
Laptop case
Bike parts
Batteries
Broom
Meal replacement drinks

It's just stuff I can't get near by or would be really expensive or I needed ASAP

daisychain01 · 13/12/2020 11:36

We'd better get used to Amazon. We'll be grateful for their significant purchasing power and robust supply chain when all the shortages kick in due to leaving the EU.

I'm not kidding, and it pains me to say it but that will be the reality!

Oh, and I managed to buy 2 large boxes of Moma porridge (ordered yesterday at 6pm delivered to my door at 10.30 am today.) None of the U.K. supermarkets have had them in stock for a month, but Amazon has a huge variety of them. Go figure!

daisychain01 · 13/12/2020 11:41

If any merchant on Amazon doesn't operate to U.K. consumer law, eg failing to accept returned goods and refunds, Amazon can intervene and force the merchant to do the right thing. In some circumstances they refund the customer and then take over direct with the merchant. They are fair in terms of looking at the facts and deciding who is in the right and acting accordingly.

Another benefit of buying from them.

Adoptthisdogornot · 13/12/2020 11:41

Amzon treat their staff badly. Their suppliers badly. They don't pay their taxes. They don't care about the environment. They have created an impossible environment for other businesses and driven them out of the market with points 1 and 2. Their home listening devices are downright sinister. They have far too much influence over what media we consume, which is a threat to choice and ultimately, democracy (fake news, biased news, Alexa deciding which side of a story you hear etc.) They sell a huge amount of dodgy products, make up and toys which fall well below standards for example. They have been caught trading in truly horrible stuff, e.g. white supremacist merchandise. Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world, worth more money than some countries GDP, but does almost nothing to improve anyones lives. The company, business model, people and ethos of Amazon should be abhorrent to anyone with a social conscience. Every time you shop on amazon, you reduce the amount of money available for public spending here, and make the world's greediness man a bit richer.

daisychain01 · 13/12/2020 11:45

I'm no fan of Bezos but he isn't a charity.

You could say the same about all captains of industry. They would say they make peoples lives better by creating employment, and goods people want and need. People don't have to buy from Amazon if they don't want to, he doesn't point a gun at people's heads, but he has shown businesses how to operate a slick and efficient supply chain.

peboh · 13/12/2020 11:47

I love Amazon. It's just so much easier sometimes than trying to find things on a hundred different sites, everything is there is one place and with next day delivery with prime you really can't go wrong.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/12/2020 11:54

My main reason is delivery.

I ordered some stuff from Hobbycraft at the mid/end Nov. I received them 3 days ago.

I ordered stuff from Amazon. Sometimes l receive it the same day, sometimes next day. Why would l use Hobbycraft again?

U.K. retailers need to up their game to beat Amazon. Next and Argos are the only others who are nearly there.

As long as Amazon offer outstanding delivery, the more profitable they will become.

StormzyinaTCup · 13/12/2020 11:57

Granted he hasn’t spread his wealth very far in recent years but he has just made a $10 billion pledge to help combat climate change (second largest charitable donation in recent history) which may go some way to improving everyones lives both now and for future generations.

exLtEveDallas · 13/12/2020 12:36

If it hasn't come from an educational catalogue, we can't use it

Good Lord, really?

We stopped using TTS, Consortium etc ages ago because of the price. For example, coloured overlays for students with dyslexia - a 10 pack is £25 from TTS, I can get a 12 pack for £12.99 on Amazon.

We are a state school as well, we simply can’t afford not to use Amazon!

brittanyfairies · 13/12/2020 12:58

I use Amazon for absolutely everything. It's not just convenience for me it's peace of mind and well. For example a box with over 100 euros of Christmas presents was delivered to me on Wednesday but it was obvious that when the postman handed the box over it was empty. Someone had stolen everything out of the box in transit.

I contacted Amazon via webchat when I got home from work, I don't even think I spoke to a person just a robot. Less than a minute later they told me I would be reimbursed within a week. The money was back in my account by Friday. It's customer service like that is the reason I shop with Amazon

cologne4711 · 13/12/2020 13:02

I think Amazon is good. You can get pretty much everything, you know when it will arrive (roughly) and it does arrive.

I think all the emphasis on shopping local and using independent shops is all very well, but they are not always that great, don't sell what I want to buy and have unreliable opening hours.

I know they don't pay corporation tax in the UK but they do pay some tax eg NI contributions for their employees (and their employees pay tax).

It's fashionable to hate Amazon but we would have been hard pushed to function without them this year.

bugaboo218 · 13/12/2020 13:02

How can you not find anything you want to buy on Amazon? They sell everything.

I love Amazon. Buy lots from there. It maybe a little more expensive for some things, but the convenience of having prime and not having to go out shopping far out weighs any negatives in my opinion.

Unless the high Street bucks its ideas up and both the big chains and smaller independents buck their ideas up offering what customers want backed with excellent customer service then they will cease to trade.

Amazon is so popular because it can give customers what they want quickly and has excellent customer service.

ghostmous3 · 13/12/2020 13:15

'Please support your local independent bookshop over Amazon'

My local independent bookshop doesn't stock the book I need and wont order it in.

I also use amazon for rare second hand book that I cant find in above mentioned shop

Crankley · 13/12/2020 13:28

Please support your local independent bookshop over Amazon

I tried, the display at the front of their store prevented access by my mobility scooter. I e-mailed to explain wheelchairs and scooters couldn't get in - could they please leave a bigger gap and got told 'order online'. So I took their advice .. I order on Amazon.

There are thousands of different items on Amazon, you're not looking hard enough OP.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/12/2020 13:36

Have you tried buying a gift card from Dunelm? They don’t do online. I’d have to drive 25m , queue to get in, queue at the tills. And then the recepient can’t even use it to buy anything online. Seriously in the 21st century, who can be aresed with this?

So lots of retailers need to up their game..

Zoflorabore · 13/12/2020 13:38

I love Amazon. I’ve ordered over 200 times during lockdown from things like paint to storage units. I am a Prime member and never pay down delivery.

Many items even arrive the same day. I have few health conditions which make this an attractive option.
I hardly went out for 6 months.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/12/2020 13:41

I’m going to see how much I’ve ordered now😳

Akire · 13/12/2020 13:41

What are people buying that’s all fake? I’ve never had a problem with it in 15years. Granted if you buy some kids shoes from China for 20p then yes odds are they are rubbish. HOW can you never need books, printer ink, paper, pens, nappies wipes (or reusable) household cleaning, toys, food, medicines, make up, clothes, DIY or any sport items ever?

Simplyunacceptable · 13/12/2020 13:43

They sell pretty much everything so not sure how or why anyone would struggle to find something. I buy all sorts on Amazon from books through to electrical items. Sometimes it’s cheaper from other stores but is isn’t as convenient so I still use Amazon.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/12/2020 13:46

250😱about 80 were ebooks though.

CanICelebrate · 13/12/2020 13:50

We use it loads because it is fast and easy. I always price check with other places and normally Amazon is cheapest. I ordered a Fitbit yesterday morning and got it yesterday evening!
I also love Amazon prime video.

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/12/2020 13:55

Yeah we get it you're too good for amazon not like the rest of us shit munchers.

HitthatroadJack · 13/12/2020 13:57

I love amazon, I use it A LOT.

I have Prime and it has been a lifesaver. SOME things are more expensive, some things are cheaper, of course you need to shop around.
I have even bought items slightly more expensive, because once you added the lengthy delivery and the expensive postage from another shop, it worked out cheaper with amazon.

You can even buy loo rolls on amazon Grin

You can even find some brands cheaper on amazon than direct through their own website.

I know it's nice to support your local bookstore, but when a new book is 75% cheaper on amazon than locally..

dottiedodah · 13/12/2020 14:04

I love Amazon! Really reasonable prices ,loads of choice .I mean seriously whats not to like!
