To ask you about constipation in toddlers?

Sorry, posting for traffic.

DS(2) is absolutely besides himself with constipation. Sweating, shaking, crying, just saying ‘my bottom hurts’, ‘my poo is stuck’ etc. Over and over: He’s never had constipation before and he seems really affected. He’s managed to pass a couple of large, round, clay-like lumps today, and he’s getting some overflow soiling but it’s clearly not all out as he got half a lump out earlier and then couldn’t continue. He’s really sad and just wants to lie down having his tummy rubbed. We’re giving him loads of fluids. He keeps saying he’s hungry but won’t eat. What else am I supposed to be doing?

💐 hope it gets sorted soon

Thank you everyone, that’s so helpful!

We happen to have some lactulose (my hyperemesis meds caused awful constipation!) so have given him the paediatric dose, and he’s sat in a warm bath playing for an hour. No movement but he’s much happier in himself. He’s currently snacking on fruit (satsumas normally give him explosive diarrhoea anyway) for good measure.

I’m really hoping it’s a one off but will speak to the GP. He’s seemed to go backwards with his potty training and has had lots of wee accidents in the last few days (and no poo) so it’s obviously been going on a little while, I just hadn’t realised.

Wee accidents are a sign of impaction. Do look at the Poo Nurses video. It is really good.

@endofthelinefinally you sound just like my sister! She told us to ignore the GP's max 4 movicol per day and do the proper disimpaction regime. The GP was fine with it, and said that a consultant paediatrician knows what she's talking about.
