To have not gone in to work today?

5 weeks post covid outbreak in office. Still a number of people off. Yesterday finally came down with the cold my 2 DD's have had for the past week. Don't know whether my immune system is still a bit knocked, because it's totally wiped me out. It was agreed the other 2 managers would be off today (midweek) which was fine as I was due to be in. This morning I couldnt even keep my balance getting out of bed so I called in sick. It doesn't seem to have gone down well as it, as it left the office supervisor-less. There's no way with a blocked yet running nose, and a nasal drip cough that I could have worn a mask for 9 hours (this was stipulated yesterday that if I did come in I was required to wear one all day and not move around the building unless for loo breaks)

AIBU or are they?

YANBU - you would not have got much done and may have infected others
Is it essential for people to be in the office?

Yanbu. I didnt have the key symptoms, booked a test and it was positive. Do the same. Just say you have a temp when you fill out the form.

MrsWarleggan · 11/12/2020 17:28

@jackstini

At the moment yes, as we have no tech to WFH.

@Anon12345678910

Already tested positive in the outbreak from 5 weeks ago. Went in as didn't have any of the main 3, and was invited to do a test. Turned out to be positive and was vilified for going in. I was told I could go in with this cold as long as I didn't give it to anyone! 🙄

Your work are being tossers. YANBU

UrAWizHarry · 11/12/2020 17:32

Of course you shouldn't go to to work if you have an infectious illness.

FestiveChristmasLights · 11/12/2020 17:35

Yanbu.

I was sitting on my bed crying this morning. Couldn't open my eyes because of my headache and it was mentioned that because I hadn't gone in I still needed to be on the end of the phone in case someone needed something.

I truly hope we get a resurgence in having proper unions, as managers and work pressures seem to have gone absolutely crazy.

IGetIt · 11/12/2020 18:26

Re the cold, I am very sceptical about the whole 'it doesn't present as cold symptoms'.

It did with us. In fact the only symptoms me and DH had was a running nose, sneezing, a bit of a scratchy throat, and headache. No cough.

The only reason we knew to get tested was because there was an outbreak at the kids school and one of them subsequently tested positive.

Theworkwitch · 11/12/2020 18:28

You're still recovering. Don't let them make it your problem.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/12/2020 18:30

Your work are ultimately at fault here as it sounds the only thing stopping you WFH is a lack of tech. Not that your job can't be performed at home.

We've had covid proper since March. Plenty of time for the organisation to make arrangements for WFH even if it was just for periods of self isolation.

Bixs · 11/12/2020 18:33

I agree that it does present as a cold. I had a runny nose and a headache. I was tested at work and i was positive.

MrsWarleggan · 11/12/2020 18:42

I had what felt like a hangover for a week. Have been absolutely fine for the past 4 weeks, now just been hit by this cold. It definitely is a cold. Otherwise I had it once and been reinfected as there's too much of a delay between feeling better and the onset of these symptoms. Not denying it doesn't present as a cold though.

YANBU! Some colds are brutal. I had one that started off as a bog standard snotty cold, then I had dizziness and woke up with awful chills and a raging temperature. If you’re ill, you’re ill, there’s too much of a ‘well I struggled in when I was ill’ in some workplaces.
