To buy a knife as a Christmas gift for my DH?

Peridotty · 11/12/2020 07:07

My DH doesn’t really want anything for Christmas but I know that he would be thrilled with a fancy Japanese kitchen knife. Should I get one or is it a bit weird/ bad vibes to give someone a knife for Christmas?

I'm currently saving up for one of these:

They're absolutely stunning

I've got a box of Japanese knives for my DH for Christmas, there's 7 Confused if you decide to buy, these were from ProCook with free next day delivery x

I've got my DH a knife for Christmas, hadn't heard of the superstition! Good to know, don't think we've had any cash in the house all year though...

cctvrec · 11/12/2020 09:12

I'm glad I've read this! I asked DH for a set of knives and had no idea about the luck. And Covid aside, this has quite simply been the worst year of my life starting way back in January when my dad got dizzy at my house. 24 hours later he was officially dying of brain tumours. He passed on remembrance Sunday..
DH managed to write off our car and whilst the insurance paid out, it was a pathetic amount as on paper the car wasn't worth a thing but was invaluable to us because it worked. We had just forked out almost £1K on repairs and new tyres etc in the three months previous.
We still don't have a car 4 months later.
And our daughter has Covid so we are all trapped inside praying none of us catch it so our quarantine clock isn't reset and we're trapped in til 2021.

Thor knows we don't need any more shit luck. I shall stick a pound aside for DH on Christmas Day, never mind a penny!

I bought a carving knife and fork for my husband one year. I'd never heard the superstition before.
That was probably 10 years ago and Ive lived to tell the tale! Smile

sandgrown · 11/12/2020 09:13

I must have a low IQ as I never gift a purse or wallet without putting a coin in it . Superstition says it will always be empty otherwise .

Sofornow1 · 11/12/2020 09:14

I’ve a nice set of fancy knives being delivered for my DH. Literally since the day I ordered them (he has no idea) he has complained about how awful our current knives are. I’m delighted he will love the gift (but also annoyed in case he thinks I just thought of it when he started mentioning them)

It’s so hard to get people things they like I would go for it!

I remember reading, some years ago, of an Arab royal who gave the British ambassador a gift of an expensive jewel encrusted dagger.
The ambassador, being a traditionalist, gave him the equivalent of a penny coin for it.
The royal erupted in fury, thinking he was being insulted and that the ambassador thought the gift was only worth a penny!
There were hasty explanations...Grin

@MaskingForIt

Those of low IQ think that giving a bladed object (knife/scissors) “severs the bond” between you, and that the recipient should “pay” the giver a small sum such that the gift has been bought not given.

Everyone else with a brain just gives it as a gift.

Yeah! Stupid wankers one and all!

Or maybe they think it's an amusing piece of history, worthy of reenactment, just for fun... you know, amusement - that thing that makes the corners of your mouth turn up, makes you feel happy!

Many moons ago I bought DH a knife block of Sabatiers. PoisonousSIL was aghast! Appartnyl it's a wierd present to by a man She was all "OOh, did you find your shatp knives for him then?" to which DH always chipped in witha ridiculously chuffed look on his face "Yes! In a lovely block and great sharpener too!".

And yes, 5 knives got me a 5p payment when he received them! Becasue he had heard the old wives tale and thought it would be amusing. Said 5p was glued to the underside of the knife block - still there 30+ years later!

I got a set of Global knives for my 21st, 11 years ago. A good gift as if they're well looked after they'll last a lifetime.

HappydaysArehere · 11/12/2020 09:32

Yes, lovely idea so long as he pays you for it. Ask for a penny or more before handing it to him.

Better than the ones with so low IQ they think it's ok to call others stupid for bot of superstition 🖕

On another note. Interesting! I've never heard of this superstition.

I’ve bought my DH a full set of beautiful Japanese stainless steel knives but getting a knife or two over the years.

They’re phenomenal and absolutely beautiful to use and look at.

Do it. My DH loves it.

lastqueenofscotland · 11/12/2020 09:41

I’m a keen cook and would LOVE that

CorianderQueen · 11/12/2020 14:13

Yes I've had some last year and this year! They're some of my favourites as I'd never spend £50 on one myself but I use them every day

TeaMeBasil · 11/12/2020 16:51

@Phwooooar It's always, always pickled onion Grin

ImRealHonest · 11/12/2020 17:03

One of my favourite presents XH ever bought me was my big Japanese knife. I hate using anything else whilst cooking.

It’s also the best thing he ever bought me in his eyes. He can’t remember where it came from and has been pestering me to order him one from his Amazon account for him - he loves it.

I did sleep with it under my pillow for a bit though, but he was an drunken abusive Bellend. So, very useful.

Those are nicely made.

I am particularly enamoured of Owen Bush's work in damascus steel

I’ve gotten mine Global Knives before, he wanted them and was thrilled so I’d say go ahead!

Slothkin · 12/12/2020 15:41

My husband bought me a beautiful chef’s knife a few years back and I love it! I also recently picked up a copy of Tim Hayward’s Knife which is fascinating if that’s your sort of thing.

One word of caution would be that I’m very picky about my knives so wouldn’t personally want one I hadn’t chosen, but a copy of that and an IOU for one would have had me squeaking with delight!

I’m getting my father-in-law a knife-sharpening voucher for Christmas for his Japanese knives from Blade & Butler - they’re excellent.

Peridotty · 07/01/2021 20:36

Thank you for all the replies! I got the knife and he loves it. A Zwilling JA henkels Santoku knife. I didn’t know about the superstition but I knew there was gonna be some bad luck somewhere Hmm I had him pay me one penny!
