Was I rude?

Ok so I ordered a custom freelance job on fiverr - an animation

I gave the man the details of what I wanted (never changed my brief or any details at all), and he quoted me a price, I agreed and paid. All work undertaken is subject to my approval.

When he showed me this initial work for character design for approval I told one design wasnt accurate and referred him back to the original detail. He never seemed to get exactly what I was saying, even though I ended up sketching it out for him. He kept asking me just to change it as it was easier for him as he already designed the character now 😳

Eventually it was just easier to let him carry on the way he wanted. Project is already massively delayed. He sends me sample of finished work and it’s obvious it’s been rushed. I can’t use it for my business. He sent the final sample late last night & repeated messages during the night telling to approve & accept it and he was expecting significantly more money now as it took him longer than he expected. (Not my fault he underestimated it)

I do feel bad for the time he spent on and accept it. I don’t feel I can ask him to edit it as I know the response anyway. But don’t tip or leave a review as I feel he has been very rude.

He then sends me berating messages for not leaving a review. I told him it was because his attitude was rude. Now I feel bad.

Well, you could always leave an honest review, but, from your description it is unlikely to lead to more customers for him.

Lol yeah my thinking was - if you have nothing nice to say, then best say nothing at al

It seems unfair to not go back to him to give him the opportunity to rectify it. You might be well with your assumption of how he will react but you should still let him know and take it from there.

Nothing wrong with a factual review.

BigBaublesGalore · 11/12/2020 00:41

YABU not leaving an honest review so others don't end up wasting money on him

WayTooSoon · 11/12/2020 00:42

Dont feel bad. Why should you leave a positive review if the work wasn't completed in line with the original brief?

ClaireP20 · 11/12/2020 00:50

In situations like this, I always ask myself 'what would Karen Brady do?'

Well, she would ignore him and never give him another thought.

Sparklfairy · 11/12/2020 00:57

Are you accepting the work, i.e. you paid for it but are not using it and that's the end of the transaction?

If so, I'd write to him with three options for him.

  1. you leave a review but it will be factual (not to brief, he wanted you to change your brief to suit him Hmm, his communication was unprofessional and he pestered you for a review, and wanted more money etc).

  2. he does the job to your actual brief for no extra cost

  3. you both walk away now with no review

I know which one I'd choose in his shoes Wink

Googlebrained · 11/12/2020 01:02

I'm not quite clear why you feel guilty. From the sounds of it he's done a shoddy job. If anything you should leave a poor review of his work as he didn't meet the brief. And expecting you to pay him more than the original cheap is beyond CF territory.

Googlebrained · 11/12/2020 01:03

Cost not cheap!

Yes @Sparklfairy it’s paid for but I won’t use it & I was happy to just walk away at that. Lol I think he’s lucky I didn’t leave a review lol

I feel bad for telling him he was rude 🙈 I’m a such a pushover.

I actually still think he has talent if he could work to the brief. I was going to say constructive criticism but it wasn’t even that - it was like saying I want this character to be blue, and him providing me with a green one.

It's just fascinating to see how younger women pretzel themselves into taking the guilt for stuff. Not a criticism as I've been there and I think it's all part of the social conditioning we get to be 'nice'. When you're longer in the tooth, you just can't be doing with that stuff. Is he feeling guilty for causing you delays, providing a poor service, supplying something unusable? No, he's come out punching, demanding more cash and wanting to be rewarded for failure basically.

🖕🏼That's what he really deserves. But as you're far to polite to say that, you could stick with, I cannot give you a good review as you didn't stick to the brief and caused me commercial delays. Please stop bothering me or I will have to leave an accurate review reflecting the above.

Since when were reviews compulsory?
