To want my DP to wear a suit to his interview

My DP had a job interview via teams last week. I convinced him to wear a shirt and tie for this, he said he felt like a bit of an idiot because the people interviewing him were just wearing polo shirts and fleeces etc.

Anyway he must have done something right as he’s been asked to go into tomorrow to get a feel for the place and they will be making him a job offer.

He wants to wear a pair of black jeans and a shirt, I think he should wear a suit. He thinks he’ll be over dressed, he usually wears jeans and a polo shirt to his work and this place will no doubt be the same. Surely it’s better to be overdressed and show you care?

This is a professional senior engineering position and the salary is around 50k.

I would say a shirt and trousers, perhaps not a suit jacket.

I work in a similar field at a similar level. Never worn a suit in my life. Last interview I wore shorts and a polo. Still got the job.

Figgyboa · 10/12/2020 21:26

I voted YABU since it's your DH interview and he should decide what to wear.
That said, I think a suit/tie may be a little over the top, I would suggest shirt and trousers, minus the tie!

Bagelsandbrie · 10/12/2020 21:28

Shirt and trousers and maybe jacket over his arm. Not jeans!

YorkshireGirl35 · 10/12/2020 21:59

HR manager here and I’m afraid I still judge when people are not dressed smartly for interviews. People don’t expect ties so much these days but definitely a suit.

Doveyouknow · 10/12/2020 22:18

It depends on the industry he is in. Where I work wearing a suit and tie is not unusual though not everyone does. So we wouldn't turn someone down at interview because they wore a suit (or for any other aspect of their appearance for that matter)

If he is moving within the same industry then I would suggest he wears what would be expected by his current employer at interview.

Shirt, Jacket, no tie

HallFloor · 10/12/2020 22:26

I recently interviewed for a post that would usually be casually dressed. The job went to the only one who wore a suit. That wasn't the reason he got the job, but it was many of indicators that he wanted the job more than the others.

GOODCAT · 10/12/2020 22:32

He should wear a suit. I have been interviewing people this week and it definitely makes a difference to how I view people. He won't lose by wearing a suit, but could if he doesn't.

PolloDePrimavera · 10/12/2020 22:34

Suits are pretty outdated now, unless in certain fields of course. I'd say a smart shirt and trousers , no tie. Good luck to him, hope it's perfect!

thepeopleversuswork · 10/12/2020 22:43

Suit definitely. You can't lose a job for being overdressed at the interview.

Mousehole10 · 10/12/2020 22:46

I work in an engineering company. We would be seriously unimpressed if someone turned up for interview in black jeans. Doesn’t matter what others in the company are wearing, you go smart for interviews.

Scautish · 10/12/2020 22:50

Suit definitely- even if it’s not the culture. We’re not a suits company but when interviewing it’s noticed if someone hasn’t made the effort. Absolutely a suit.

Teenagetrials · 10/12/2020 22:52

I work in HR. In my view he should reflect the culture of the company - if they all wear suits and he doesn’t, that will not look good, but similarly he could look like a poor cultural fit if he overdresses (but think this is less bad than being underdressed!) FWIW, I think very few people are wearing suits at the moment

jessyjo2 · 10/12/2020 23:03

Think id go smart but not suit. Generally work places aren't dressing up as much anymore. Are u familiar wìth the business or what others generally wear? Depends a lot on nature of business.

tttigress · 10/12/2020 23:10

I probably would have just worn a business shirt, and jeans for the teams interview.

But I think for going on site you need a suit and tie (or at the very least trousers and a sports jacket type outfit)
