From a family member? I've been asked to say yay or nay before she buys it.

I'm on the fence about it. I would like to be brave and say yes of course but it does concern me a little.

Yabu - it's fine don't worry, you have to start trusting him sometime.

Yanbu - of course not, it's not a kids thing.

It says over18 and it's amazon

I cut my hand on a really tiny penknife on a camping trip when I was about that age. I was playing with it in the car. My own stupid fault. Tried to hide it from my parents - made them stop the car as I said I needed the loo. I think they found out as it was bleeding quite a lot. So I'm not sure I would say yes to this.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 10/12/2020 18:25

If it says on the product page it won't be delivered to an under-18 then it's a no from me.

But you know your child best.

Labobo · 10/12/2020 18:27

That would have been DSs idea of heaven aged 10. Probably still would be aged 18!

taybert · 10/12/2020 18:29

I think it’s quite cool but at the same time I think the sort of supervision he would need with it would make it a bit useless- I would think it would need to be something he would only carry if he had a specific need to use it, but if you’re taking a torch camping you’d want to have that available to you all the time, especially at night. Whilst individually children might be sensible and trusted, I’m not sure I’d trust 3 or 4 10 year olds on a cub camp away from home in a tent, messing around with a knife present.

DesperatelySeekingSunshine · 10/12/2020 18:30

Last year at that age DS had a my first Swiss Army knife, it’s only allowed out of the house with permission, and gets used to whittle sticks as he walks along... countryside walks not through the town centre!

BiscuitDrama · 10/12/2020 18:32

Mine has a whittling knife which he uses under vague supervision. I’d worry about the folding in of a knife, I used to nearly get bitten by my Swiss Army knife when I was an adult.

Echobelly · 10/12/2020 18:36

I'd say that's pretty cool, and a 10 year old will like it. Teach him how to use all the bits and he can feel grown-up and responsible! (And less likely to do anything silly with them if he knows what they're for).

But yes, be clear it's not to go into school or be carried about on his own.

Pascha · 10/12/2020 19:23

OK. I think I'm going to pass and ask for a great torch instead. He hasn't had the opportunity to do anything much with cubs due to no meetings since March (only zoom) and he's never been camping with them so no knife work or certificate or anything.

I'm not against him having such a thing but kept closely supervised which doesn't make it much of a Christmas present. Next year when he goes up to scouts maybe he will get more opportunity to use it.
