Mine is that a traditional Christmas dinner is horrible
Turkey - bleurgh, so dry
Sprouts - farts posing as leaves
Parsnips - how can anyone put them in their mouth?!
Stuffing - like eating sand
Christmas pudding - sour booze disguised as cake
Christmas cake - way too dry and that much fruit does not belong in a sponge

I'd honestly be happy with a plate of pigs in blankets, a jar of cranberry sauce and a spoon to eat the sauce straight from the jar.

YANBU, it's all overhyped nonsense that's got completely out of hand over the years. Certainly not worth elderly people mixing with lots of different households at Christmas, for this "special" day, when many of them are just weeks away from being vaccinated.

Turkey - it can be nice, but I prefer chicken. Bread sauce - yuk! Sprouts - nasty things, worse veg ever. Christmas pud - OK, but other puddings are better.

Cards - waste of time, resources and effort, but I still send a few nice cards to older family members and friends who really appreciate them, because I don't want to upset them. Over the years I've reduced the numbers right down - I no longer send cards to relatives I barely know and haven't seen for years. If the only contact you have with some people is a Christmas card then surely there's a reason for that? If there is genuine fondness between people they normally keep in contact throughtout the year, if not, why bother with the fakery of wishing them Happy Christmas by post?

I know some people love it, and that's fine, but it's also fine for adults to not get involved, if they don't buy into the whole thing. I think it's different if you have young children though - unless your religion precludes celebrating Christmas it would be mean not to provide gifts for your children and make some sort of effort for them, albeit low key and keeping it affordable.

Also, there is evidence that Jesus was probably born in spring, so celebrating his birth in December is odd.

I could go on for pages about this - just call me the Grinch! Grin Anyway, happy winter festival everyone!

Mylifesadrama · 11/12/2020 18:52

Having to listen to the same songs for over 40 years!

Her1mum · 11/12/2020 18:52

Christmas pudding is a thing of beauty and a joy forever, but not straight after a huge turkey dinner. It’s best enjoyed later or in another day when you’re peckish imo

MrsKoala · 11/12/2020 18:52

Another unpopular opinion is that Christmas Eve is just a normal working day. When I grew up everyone just went to work like normal, maybe finished an hour or 2 early but it wasn’t a big deal. I went to the CM all day. Then when I worked everyone just went to work. Now I’m a parent it’s a day that something is supposed to happen. I don’t really know what!

StoneofDestiny · 11/12/2020 18:55

Can't stand sprouts, Christmas pudding, cranberry sauce or Christmas cake. I prefer Chicken to Turkey.
No idea what a Christmas Eve Box is or meant to be (saw them in a shop window and it gave no clues)
Likewise, elf in a shelf - heard of it on here but no idea what it is meant to be about.

onetwothreeadventure · 11/12/2020 18:56

Christmas should be spent somewhere far away and warm!

Confusedandshaken · 11/12/2020 18:56

I love turkey. I buy 2 so one can be roasted, sliced and frozen for sandwiches all year round.

My daughter is veggie and so Yorkshire pudding is the protein part of her Christmas dinner and my brother loves Yorkshire pudding so much that he often forgoes the meat part of any roast dinner to have room for more Yorkshire pudding.

I also hate mince pies, Christmas puddings and fruit cake. Our Christmas cake has always been a Victoria sponge birthday cake. The D.C. would decide what theme of cake Baby Jesus would like for his birthday that year (Teletubbies one year, Barbie another etc). We would light some candles (not 2000 obviously) and sing Happy Birthday Dear Jesus.

And presents are overrated. We save ours until Boxing Day because otherwise they eat into Christmas Day too much.

StoneofDestiny · 11/12/2020 18:56

Oh - and the smell of those Christmas spice wreaths/pomander - smell them 2 streets away at Christmas markets. Which reminds me - mulled wine - ugh

StoneofDestiny · 11/12/2020 18:57

Mince pies - work of the devil

Kljnmw3459 · 11/12/2020 18:58

Omg yes, turkey is so boring and can't be made to taste nice. Pigs in blankets are totally meh..

Nearly47 · 11/12/2020 19:07

I don't like Turkey either and feel guilty about all the wrapping ( so many trees) and not even recyclable! And the endless plastic rubish people buy. But I like the light decoration around the neighbourhood

Harls1969 · 11/12/2020 19:15

Ah I love Christmas. I love the songs (not Mistletoe and Wine though). We love Christmas dinner so much we have one on Boxing Day too (including Brussels which I adore). We even have Yorkshire puddings because my family love them - so what if they should be with roast beef, does it actually matter? Christmas is the only good thing about winter. New Year though - I fucking hate it!

Fwaltz · 11/12/2020 19:25

My husbands family all absolutely love a Boxing Day hash with leftovers, and I haaaaate it!

willsantausesantatize · 11/12/2020 19:26

New year is awful and will be even worse this year. I bet they have ' celebs' from A to Z doing a ' new year ' song on zoom or something ' inspirational ' like that to ' cheer us up' because it'll be lockdown and nothing open and last years fireworks on instead. I do get teary at ' auld Lang syne ' ( or however it's spelt , sorry ) only because I miss those no longer with us!
Mostly it's a time to get through.

PrincessNutNutRoast · 11/12/2020 19:36

Yeah, New Year has always been one to fuck right off. Though in a way, that's why I enjoy it. I order in, watch a film and go to bed at ten.

Holothane · 11/12/2020 19:37

I loathe nye Eve the tv is crap so dvds for me.

mynameisbiggles · 11/12/2020 19:43

Blimey, a whole page of Ebeneezer Scrooge's.....lighten up people....its Christmas....show a bit of goodwill or buy yourself some Humbugs!!

KisstheTeapot14 · 11/12/2020 19:43

Getting together at Mother's.

It's actually very boring.

I know I'll regret this when she's gone, but seriously I can't look a vol au vent in the face ever again.

I am actually quite pleased that this year it will all be different to the past 20 odd years.

Its like groundhog day, every sodding Christmas.

BabyLlamaZen · 11/12/2020 19:44

Fairytale of new York. Bleh!!

KisstheTeapot14 · 11/12/2020 19:45

Disclaimer: I do actually love Christmas as a kind of Pagan/Christian time of magic and midwinter. I love pudding. Cheese. Cards and presents. The Tree. Love it.

willsantausesantatize · 11/12/2020 19:47

I had a few groundhog Christmas days with the inlaws , even the rows were the same!
Things do change in time, but for five years it was same old , same old.
I could have recorded it and played it back each year and avoided the misery of it all! ( if only)

Rabblemum · 11/12/2020 19:51

I'm skint with a very well to do family, I hate the pressure of giving gifts. My family says "oh you only have to spend a fiver on every", that builds up. I'd love to only spend money on my kids and boyfriend and get nothing off them.

It's really inconsiderate to put poor people into debt just because of tradition.

Sciennes · 11/12/2020 19:52

Um...I hate pigs-in-blankets...why ruin a good crispy cocktail sausage by turning it into a flaccid soggy mess surrounded by fatty bacon?!
Gross.
Oh, and my in-laws never do ham with their turkey...they picked the wrong meat there!

wimhoffbreather · 11/12/2020 20:00

You’re doing them wrong, I cook my pigs in blankets until the bacon AND sausage is crispy Grin little honey and mustard on them at the end before a last blast under the grill - delish!
FelicisNox · 11/12/2020 20:01

RE: food..... you've clearly never had a decent Xmas dinner.

RE: Yorkshire puddings.....they go with every roast dinner so get in the bin ya peasants.

Do They Know It's Christmas...... Worst. Song. Ever.
