YANBU, it's all overhyped nonsense that's got completely out of hand over the years. Certainly not worth elderly people mixing with lots of different households at Christmas, for this "special" day, when many of them are just weeks away from being vaccinated.
Turkey - it can be nice, but I prefer chicken. Bread sauce - yuk! Sprouts - nasty things, worse veg ever. Christmas pud - OK, but other puddings are better.
Cards - waste of time, resources and effort, but I still send a few nice cards to older family members and friends who really appreciate them, because I don't want to upset them. Over the years I've reduced the numbers right down - I no longer send cards to relatives I barely know and haven't seen for years. If the only contact you have with some people is a Christmas card then surely there's a reason for that? If there is genuine fondness between people they normally keep in contact throughtout the year, if not, why bother with the fakery of wishing them Happy Christmas by post?
I know some people love it, and that's fine, but it's also fine for adults to not get involved, if they don't buy into the whole thing. I think it's different if you have young children though - unless your religion precludes celebrating Christmas it would be mean not to provide gifts for your children and make some sort of effort for them, albeit low key and keeping it affordable.
Also, there is evidence that Jesus was probably born in spring, so celebrating his birth in December is odd.
I could go on for pages about this - just call me the Grinch!
Anyway, happy winter festival everyone!
