To expect online deliveries to be packaged appropriately

I ordered online from Mountain Warehouse - sherpa blanket, thick padded overtrousers.. added a couple of candles to get free delivery.
Finally turned up today, a week later. The clothes are wrapped in acres of plastic, as is the blanket. The candles, in glass jars - no bloody packaging whatsoever, just rattling around in the metre wide plastic sack.
Candles are in pieces, splinters and shards of glass everywhere, including embedded in the plastic packaging needed for the oh so delicate and dainty blankets and overtrousers that needed all that packaging.
Fortunately I heard the glass when I picked the package up, otherwise it could have gone all over the sofa and floor on opening it.
It's not the end of the world, I am just gobsmacked that anyone could be so utterly stupid.

Rant over - but such utter stupidity Xmas Shock

The same happened to me with another retailer fairly recently. Total madness. Must cost retailers a fortune and it’s completely avoidable with a bit of common sense.

YANBU - That’s so annoying.

If it’s not too late take a photo of all the damage/mess and email them about it. You might get a voucher or something. I would be tempted to send the whole lot back as it is and ask for a full refund anyway.

I submitted an online complaint straight away, and said that I needed a full refund - TBH I don't want to touch the stuff to package it to send back - the glass is everywhere and I don't want to touch it for fear of spreading it further on the floor/sofa, etc. I've just chucked it all in a box at the moment, and will return it to a store at the weekend.

I bought a lovely jug/vase thing recently from M&S. It came in a box. No packaging at all. How it didn't break I have no idea!

Retailers were slack before Covid but a lot of them are using it as an excuse for being shit.

I have barely left the house since lockdown 1 began so have shopped a LOT online. Most things are fine. I've had candles, wine, glasses, makeup etc delivered well packaged and no damage. The worst offender for me is Waitrose (the only grocery delivery I've been able to receive). Every single week they place a bag of salad under 4 pints of milk. If I try to fool them by not ordering salad they put the tomatoes or the eggs in its place.

Result (eventually)
In response to my online complaint after a four day wait they offered me a discount on my next purchase.
I tweeted that I had no intention of using them again, and looked forward to showering the local branch with broken glass on taking the package back - full refund promised within a couple of hours.

Haven't checked my bank account yet.

I bought my DC a mug each for Christmas from Matalan and two were smashed because they were just wrapped in one thin sheet of plastic. Trying to get a refund from them was a real rigmarole, they ignored me for weeks.

Dunelm Mill excels at this. I ordered a load of new stuff for our kitchen - ceramic teapot, jugs, coffee containers - it was literally all placed into a massive cardboard box, rattling around with nothing to protect it. Several items were chipped or broken. In fairness they sent replacements quickly (which also arrived damaged due to the lack of packaging). I gave up by the time the 3rd chipped milk jug arrived.
