Just out of interest what are the weirdest things you have found when moving? Mine was just lots of problems left by previous owners 🤣 but wondered if anyone had random/weird things!

OP posts:

A gorgeous wedding dress, looked vintage (maybe 20s)

mrshonda · 09/12/2020 16:42

A vibrator tucked inside the hot water tank jacket. It fell out as the tank was being inspected prior to moving in. I don't know who was more embarrassed, the inspector man or us!

We bought a flat from a famous-ish actor and found a ton of weed and a many er...interesting prescription drugs. He also left behind his tax returns and several annotated movie scripts.

Oh and a LOT of condoms.

TigerDrawers · 09/12/2020 16:50

Not when we moved but just after we realised the gutters were blocked. Got someone in to clear them who found one of these stuck in it at roof level - [https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gresorth-Lobster-Dispaly-Artificial-Decoration/dp/B014IWZRSU Lobster]] - no idea how it got there!

@DaughterOfEvening

I’ve posted about this before. Found a human jawbone, complete with teeth & several pieces of longer bones in the cupboard under the stairs a few days after we moved into our home almost 20 years ago. Phoned the estate agent who said phone the police, who seemed unbothered, turned up a few days later but took them away.
If this happens again (I realise this is unlikely!) call the coroner’s office. They’ll get a forensic archaeologist to look at them and determine whether they are recent enough to merit police involvement.
FitterHappierMoreProductive · 09/12/2020 16:52

A ghost.

LeSangeEstDansLarbre · 09/12/2020 17:01

A Victorian school desk with inkwells. The owners had been teachers who’d taught at the 19th century primary school in town for donkey’s years, both before and after it moved to a modern building in the 1970s. I guess they kept it as a souvenir when the school moved, but it didn’t make it to their new home. It’s still in the attic nearly ten years after we moved in!

Lonelycrab · 09/12/2020 17:09

The skull of a ram or goat, complete with horns, placed in the oven waiting for me when I opened the doors just a few minutes after getting the keys. Do I win the thread?Grin

Europilgrim · 09/12/2020 17:10

A friend of mine was having a house built and when they dug the foundations they found three (human) skeletons.

CrimsonCattery · 09/12/2020 17:33

A ceiling fan still in its box in the loft of my first flat.

A full cellar of mouldy crap in my second house including an old suitcase full of cards and letters. Loads of big mirrors as well of which I salvaged two which I took with me when I moved.

This house had a load of dirt, a nice carving knife in the dishwasher and a pot of googly eyes which I keep meaning to use to prank someone.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 09/12/2020 17:49

A secret room behind a wall in the basement. Less creepy than it sounds, full of leftover building materials. They clearly thought there was a handy hole.

Huge sofa with no cushions. Old lady seller said she took the cushions because her dog liked them but we might like the sofa. Yeah, right.

Moving into shared house with what proved to be nightmare landlord. First sign was him saying he'd cleaned the place extra thoroughly. I found a condom under the bed.
Used.

RexMyDarling · 09/12/2020 17:52

So not found from previous owner but from ourselves. I still don’t understand it!!

My dad died in 2011 and to help my mum we rushed in a move to a house near hers. We had a chest of drawers with 7 drawers in it and we lost just one of the drawers.

Searched high and low, spoke to removers company, went back to old house etc etc. Never found it so dumped chest of drawers (which had been fairly new) and bought a new one.

In 2012 we bought our own house, round the corner from where we rented but still got movers. Then moved again in 2015 for other family reasons.

And then out of nowhere the drawer turns up! So two moved later after searching for ages it just suddenly reappeared! I know I looked everywhere for that drawer and kept the chest of drawers way longer than I should because I was convinced it would turn up and it did.... 4 years later!

Twinkie01 · 09/12/2020 17:53

Little girls screwed up stained knickers behind every u bend in the house, even the boys bathrooms. She must have been having accidents and hiding them. Wasn't a pleasant find.

Flabbymcnally · 09/12/2020 18:13

@RexMyDarling but tuned up where? Under the bed, in the loft???

TikTokFinger · 09/12/2020 18:17

A bag of used dildos in the loft bedroom.

ChristmasFluff · 09/12/2020 19:10

A drawer full of finger/toe nail clippings. I didn't examine them closely enough to fully discern which.

AngelDelightUK · 09/12/2020 19:43

A vintage looking vibrator in the wardrobe, run by those massive cube style batteries and the warning “this may interfere with television reception” on the box Confused

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 09/12/2020 20:18

Not steam powered? 😂

TeeniefaeTroon · 10/12/2020 01:25

@Snuggleworm we tried that, they left the country and left an 18 year old to deal with the debt collectors.
From pure chance (a comment by my 11 year old at a club meeting was overheard by a leader and it turned out it was his ex wife's house) we invited the ex husband to the house to go through anything he'd like. Even though he was in contact with his daughter he only took videos, photos etc. All of her belongings were left. We had two weeks to clear their stuff before we could move our belongings in.
The previous owners had months to collect their belongings but didn't.

BritWifeinUSA · 10/12/2020 02:06

The previous owner if our house was very boring by comparison. He left:

  • a shopping list
  • a photo of him and (presumably) his parents on a cruise ship
  • a letter from his boss telling him he was fired with immediate effect
Catsup · 10/12/2020 02:36

Big swathes of old carpet I had to dig out of the garden, loads of old beer cans, glass from smashed windows, old toys. Inside - some really creepy gothic murals in every room which were a bugger to paint over. An inbuilt kitchen cupboard that had a billion random rusty nails hammered into the walls, and what looked like a part disintegrated old leather dog collar hanging on one of them? I really, really hoped there wasn't a dog kept in that space, and it made me feel very uncomfortable 😞.

OMG they must have left in some hurry. How bizzare that they didn't want anything.

OMG How Bizzare. Very strange and sad that they didn't want anything.

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/12/2020 10:10

A secret room behind a wall in the basement. Less creepy than it sounds, full of leftover building materials. Damn! I was going to post this! Ours was nicely whitewashed and with a stone flagged floor, and once we'd taking down the wall bricking up the doorway, we fitted it out as a wine cellar and apple store.

In a previous house: Our initials, hidden under several layers of paint. We took it as a good omen.

DaughterOfEvening · 10/12/2020 15:57

I followed up with the police months later and they referred me to the coroners office who confirmed that the bones were archaeological finds (they were numbered apparently) and that they had been given to a museum.
