Experiences of Gestational Diabetes

Posting here for traffic!

I've just been diagnosed with GD at nearly 35 weeks pregnant. I've got low end of normal BMI, a small bump, healthy diet, and am physically active so wasn't really expecting it. Baby measured 97th centile for abdominal circumference on a growth scan last week though (ironically requested by the midwife because my bump is small) and I got tested yesterday.

I have an appointment on Friday to discuss management but obviously I'm worried and guilty that it's been uncontrolled all this time. DH is frantically googling and is stressing out about long term effects on the baby, especially in terms of her future weight and cognitive development.

Can anyone who's had GD, particularly uncontrolled or diagnosed late, provide any reassuring stories?

I got diagnosed at 28 weeks. Was gutted at the time as I was already taking tinzaparin injections every morning so was scared off more needles! I was very sick throughout my pregnancy so was living off bread!

I followed a diet plan I was given and tried to walk extra. I had a food diary and 1 hour after every meal I had to prick my finger and test my blood. Had to be below 7.9. My bloods were always fine after food but seemed high in the mornings. If I got 3 high readings I had to ring the diabetic team at the hospital.

After a few weeks I had to take metformin tablets after my evening meal. At first they made me sick and have diarrhoea but after a few days it made my blood levels stay low.

I was induced early at 37 weeks 4 days, I was always planned to be induced but my son had dropped in weight so they decided to do it earlier. He weighed 5lb 4. He passed his bloods and we left the hospital the following day. Unfortunately we had to go back into hospital for jaundice treatment but I think that's mainly due to his size not GD.

There is a very good GD on Facebook with recipes etc...

I'd say it's different for everyone. My body didn't agree with potatoes, tomato soup, pasta but was ok with wraps and noodles. I was encouraged to eat lots of cheese and eggs.

For lunch I made a pizza wrap with lots of cheese, meat and veg. Also buffalo chicken wings.

My treat was one small bag of Doritos with loads of chilli con carne, cheese and sour cream - for me I got low bloods.

Evening meals - poached eggs with some spicy chicken
Fish fingers, mushy peas
Chicken balti with a small portion of rice
Chicken stir fry with noodles and lots of veg

Meals out - nandos was an ok choice. I had to be strict and not have any takeaways etc..

I was always sick in the mornings so didn't really eat breakfast.

I'm overweight and it's given me a kick up my arse. I'm scared of being type 2 so trying to loose weight and exercise more.

Good luck
