Could dc have caught chickenpox from mil?

Mil came on Sunday to drop off presents for dc's birthday. He turned 3 yesterday. Not sure if she was breaking lock down rules as she lives in a different area, and she and fil went for a walk with dh and dc? She didn't come inside. Just found out she has shingles and she didn't say anything beforehand or when she came here. Could my dc have caught chickenpox from her (he hasn't had it before) ? Dh said she was holding dc's hand and gave him some chocolate to eat? Will he have it over Christmas? Should I get some creams/ medicine just incase its when shops are closed?
AIBU to be annoyed she didn't say anything and was holding his hand when she has shingles?

OP before you dash off to boots and buy up half the calomine, oats and calpol just find out first if your ds came in contact with MIL’s blisters.
If he didn’t then he won’t have it.

Yes she could have passed it on. I’m puzzled why you haven’t had your DC vaccinated against chicken pox though? There’s no need for anyone to catch it nowadays.
I was really surprised when I learned that it's not on the standard schedule in the UK. The WHO and the CDC both recommend it.

As others have said if the rash is covered then he wont have caught chicken pox as you need to physically touch the infection site. When I had shingles I was fine to go to work with small people between 2 and 5 most of who had not had chicken pox as the rash was on my back and covered.

In Ireland everyone I know who's children had chicken pox were told about the vaccination later. I would say chances are tiny it will be passed on but if it is, dry oats in a sock and wash in shower using it. All of dses said it gave huge relief. Then calamine after.

Wait and see if anything actually happens first, and maybe unclench?

There is a part of me that thinks she did it on purpose because we are staying home this Christmas and not going to theres this year
That is harsh.

The varicella virus isn't airborne. To get chicken pox from shingles she'd have had to have got the pus from the postulates onto your son. Is this possible?

Twinkie01 · 08/12/2020 19:06

Jesus, you're son isn't even ill and doesn't have spots or anything and you're already getting your knickers in a twist and saying she's done it on purpose!!

@MotherPiglet

My MIL had shingles and was looking after my DS. The doctor told us she couldnt pass it onto my DS. We was told if he gets chicken pox he could pass it onto her though.
The doctor was wrong - it's the other way round.

Bit harsh to think she might have done it on purpose... there is a really small chance of contracting chicken pox from shingles. If she had rubbed her rash all over your child's face - maybe. Holding his hand and giving him a chocolate sound like extraordinarily low risk activities.

I had shingles whilst breastfeeding my little boy, he was only about 8 months old. The shingles rash was right under my boob, it was super painful and I felt awful with shingles, but he was totally fine. I feel sorry for your MIL and hope she feels better soon.
