I just don't understand...

My DSS is 13. I honestly think that each time I see him, he has invented a new word. The latest one is 'centy'... apparently meaning certified. Which when put into context for me, still didn't make sense. I gave up trying to understand in the end. (NB it did not mean 'officially recognised as possessing certain qualifications or meeting certain standards', being the definition provided by Google).

AIBU to want our children to use the words that already exist, not to create new ones which mean absolutely nothing to me?!

For what it's worth, I am not old! I just don't get it.

Yabu. Children have always done that

WitchesSpelleas · 08/12/2020 12:27

YABU - language is constantly evolving. Some slang terms catch on and become mainstream, some don't.

BoyTree · 08/12/2020 12:29

The words that already exist were all invented by someone! Even the word 'teenager' is less than 100 years old...

ApolloandDaphne · 08/12/2020 12:29

Children always make up words and use slang. You don't have to understand it, just accept it. Raising eyebrows is fine!

Macncheeseballs · 08/12/2020 12:31

I thought made up words were a big no no on mumsnet, I'm sure someone was complaining about the word 'parenting' the other day

ReasonablyUnreasonable · 08/12/2020 12:33

As my SS would say 'LMAO', I was not expecting to be told I was BU!

Fair enough, of course I do realise that all words were made up by someone. But every time I see him, he has a new word to introduce. I can't keep up! I do try to learn, but even he doesn't seem entirely sure what the word means.

teenagers want to have their own tribe that adults aren't part of. so they want to use new words that mark them out as part of the 'in group' and different to the adults.

It is just part of being a teen. ignore it.

ReasonablyUnreasonable · 08/12/2020 12:38

@parietal I'm not sure my SS falls into that category. I think he wants me to be involved and understand (if he sees a meme he thinks is amazing, he will run and find me to show it to me. He doesn't bother with his DF because he will definitely not understand! I at least give it a good go).

Mind you, he will give me a massive grin when I ask him about whatever word he has just used, so maybe he is trying to wind me up and exclude me from his 'group', as you put it!
