Piano playing neighbours

Neighbours have been playing the piano before 8am.
AIBU to be annoyed about this?
It’s really quite loud, loud enough to wake us up and it mostly sounds like their kid torturing the keys. We’d usually both be working by now but we’re recovering from illness.

Awful. Are you in a flat or a house?

I’m in flats. I just started to learn keyboard but with headphones in, I don’t want to upset anyone.

Nanny0gg · 08/12/2020 08:35

Will you mention it? Very anti-social

Porcupineinwaiting · 08/12/2020 08:36

Usually 7am to 9pm is fair game for reasonable living noise. So I guess it msybe depends on how loud it is. But if you usually wouldnt mind but currently need special consideration due to illness maybe tell them that.

I have a piano but only play it in the afternoon on weekends or early evening during weekdays for about 30 mins. Could you pop a polite note through their door or mention it next time you bump into them? It’s very awkward but they probably don’t realise the sound travels through the walls so much

IsAnybodyListening · 08/12/2020 08:53

Yes. Too early. DP is a very good piano player, and I have bollocked him in the past for playing late in the evening for example. That said, we once had a professional pianist next door, she played all the time, but I didn't mind as she was very talented.

Nobeautysleep · 08/12/2020 08:57

They know we’re poorly too.
I’m not sure saying anything to them would make a great deal of difference given their previous “neighbourly” behaviour, but I’m glad I’m not BU.

It's probably the kids doing music practise before school. As you say that it wouldn't normally bother you I would put up with it. Only 2 more weeks till the kids break up and routines change.

SockDrawer · 08/12/2020 08:59

Have you a actually asked them to keep the noise down before 8am? They might not even know that you can hear the piano.

I know it can be awkward to ask but this might be a case of something being very easily solved.

Notcontent · 08/12/2020 09:02

Some people are really inconsiderate. My dd plays the piano but would never play before before school. Only between around 9.30 am and 8.30 pm.

Currently have a neighbour who likes to play her radio loudly as soon as she wakes up, so frequently getting woken up at 6.30 am or earlier.

user1493413286 · 08/12/2020 09:08

If you were never up and about before 8am then fair enough but they don’t know you’re ill and may be assuming you’re up and working now.

Macncheeseballs · 08/12/2020 09:25

7am is not 'fair game', even workmen aren't allowed to start till 8

Timbucktime · 08/12/2020 09:33

I think there are some things that maybe shouldn’t be done in a non detached house. One is piano playing, I speak from experience.

CounsellorTroi · 08/12/2020 09:46

Yes too early. My DH is a piano player but he wouldn’t play that early. He now has a very good digital piano that he plays with headphones so doesn’t disturb anyone.

AramintaLee · 08/12/2020 09:56

Definitely too early. I have an upright piano against a wall and I'm very careful not to play it for too long or too early/late as I have neighbours on the other side of the wall. If I want an extended practice, I have a digital piano that I can use headphones on.

Maybe just take up the violin in retaliation and have a warm up at 8am Wink

bravotango · 08/12/2020 10:00

Far too early! I play between 9:30-7:30pm for 30 mins at a time max.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 08/12/2020 10:01

Buy a bass guitar and a massive amplifier
