Doorbell be knocking......

TransplantedScouser · 07/12/2020 23:41

I have a ring doorbell - it’s obvious and in your face. It also detects motion.

So why the hell do people knock on the glass rather than press the fucking obvious door bell! Not wanting to be seen is not the answer because you are picked up on motion!

Why? Are door bells a strange thing!

I always ring if there is a bell. So many doors now don't have knockers. In my childhood all the doors had actual knockers but nowadays all you can do is bang on the door (I feel uncomfortable doing this) or rattle the letterbox. Love a proper knocker or doorbell!

Petitmum · 08/12/2020 09:11

This drives me nuts!!! We have a front porch - if you knock on the porch door I can't hear it - we have a really loud doorbell in good working order to make sure we hear you when you ring. I'm sick of having to write "ring the doorbell" on the special delivery instructions!!!!

BloggersBlog · 08/12/2020 09:13

@Sparklingbrook

Pizza got delivered here in error the other day so went to the right house to deliver it. It was pouring with rain, rang the doorbell-couldn't hear in ring inside and nobody appeared, and I was getting soaked. Gave the letterbox a rattle and there they were-assume the bell didn't work.
Sorry, I know it is a side point but I cant let go.....Grin

Why did you have to deliver it? They always hand it out of a hot bag to the householder dont they, not knock and run?

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2020 09:18

Crossed wires @BloggersBlog. Teenage DS had been making noises about ordering pizza that night so DH took it in assuming it was his. (2 v small boxes-so looked legit for one).
Teenager was summoned from his room and said he hadn't ordered anything. Then the address on the box was checked...

DH was cooking or I would have sent him out with it!

Sonders · 08/12/2020 09:31

I wouldn't use a Ring doorbell, it's a little bit of paranoia but Amazon has enough of my data and I don't want it to know whose doors I'm knocking on too 😝

EvilPea · 08/12/2020 09:34

Because the motion sensor has gone off so you know I’m there anyway??
So I give a little tap tap on the door.

And Covid

BloggersBlog · 08/12/2020 09:40

@Sparklingbrook ah that's ok then, thanks for clearing it up Grin

I can move on with my day Grin

PattyPan · 08/12/2020 09:40

We have a doorbell and a knocker and people insist on using the knocker rather than the bell even though it’s harder to hear and the knocker currently has a wreath attached to it. Ring the bell! If it didn’t work I’d take it down or put tape over it 🙄

Grin Teenagers eh? He did want to know what was delivered though. Hmm

Springersrock · 08/12/2020 09:56

I find it the other way round

Our door bell is broken, I’ve covered it over in thick black tape - people still use the bell. Someone even peeled the tape off to press the button Confused

AlannaOfTrebond · 08/12/2020 09:57

A "little tap tap" is exactly the problem - I can't hear it unless I'm stood in the hallway.

That is why I have a doorbell!

Glittertwins · 08/12/2020 09:58

I'm clearly not the only one!! I also generally ignore the motion sensor and react when the bell is actually pressed

ILoveYoga · 08/12/2020 10:00

More often than not, the door bells don’t actually work. If I don’t hear the bell when I ring it, I’ll knock

I have noticed that most of our deliveries lately, they knock, leave package and walk off. I think these guys are doing it because it is faster than having to look where someone has put a door bell and wait to listen if it’s actually working

Yes, they take a picture in my experience. They are up against it time wise at the moment and some of them are paid per delivery so I can understand them not wanting to hang about long enough to be checking doorbells work.
youvegottenminuteslynn · 08/12/2020 10:49

@custardbear

You k is there's someone there anyway because of the bells of them approaching

It's also about social distancing.

myhobbyisouting · 08/12/2020 11:23

Nah, doorbells don't work. I knock

BigCityLife · 08/12/2020 11:24
@Sparklingbrook

It is triggered by motion - so if anyone walks on my drive it records them and alerts my phone and Alexa devices that motion has been detected

Then if the doorbell is ring, it alert my phone and Alexa devices that there is someone at the door. I can answer it remotely if I wish and tell them to leave what ever delivery it is on the door step (quiet close that no one ever wanders down)

I can also ignore it if i wish

I would have thought it a mumsnet wet dream allowing the never answer the door crowd to vet people first

It’s right in front of people’s eye - they can’t not see it
Why do you have a ring door bell? I don't know anyone who has one to ask why people have one!

TransplantedScouser · 08/12/2020 11:33

Because I wanted one.

I was sick pre covid of having to go to pick up parcels because I wasn’t in when they were delivered.

Because if I’m in the back of the house by the time I lower the foot rest on the recliner and get to the door, people have often gone so I can answer it more quickly.

I also wanted security when the previous people who owned the house opposite us lived there because they were rather rough.

I have security cameras on the back garden for the koi pond - the ring cameras and ring door bell are on the same platform so it’s one app to check rather than the old cctv one and the door bell.

But most of all because I like gadgets and I wanted one.

Carrying on your post "but it really annoys me when I see people are at home and not answering the door."

Because that is what happens here, we cannot generally hear people knocking on the door so we provide a completely functional door bell that we can hear. Just knock AND ring it's not rocket science.

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2020 11:38

I don't think I have enough unexpected visitors/deliveries to warrant such a sophisticated doorbell.

Sounds sensible if you are worried about people nicking your parcels or breaking in I guess. Plus there's been some hilarious footage on FB of people having minor accidents caught on the doorbell camera. Grin

OneTC · 08/12/2020 11:38

why?

I find our one really intrusive and prefer when people knock

EBearhug · 08/12/2020 11:40

but it really annoys me when I see people are at home and not answering the door.

Tough. I didn't answer the door the other day because I was in the middle of an important work call. Some calls I briefly excuse myself from, this one I couldn't. It was an Amazon delivery. They refused to leave it on the doorstep, even though that was exactly what thry have done ecmvery other time and what they did the next day when they redelivered (and was in, but obviously didn't hear the door.)

Someone at the door does not always make it my highest priority.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/12/2020 11:41

@EggysMom

Why don't people try the doorbell, give it 20-30 seconds to see if anybody answers, then try knocking (in case the doorbell was broken) and wait a further 30 seconds?

Do we live in an era of THAT much instant gratification that we cannot wait another 30 seconds? They could always browse social media while they are waiting Wink

Yup that's what I do - belt n braces!

I hate this too, I can't always hear someone rapping on the door, but always hear the bell. And you can hear ours from outside so you know it's rung.

LividLoves · 08/12/2020 11:43

We have a typed note on the door saying “baby sleeping, please knock, don’t ring”.

At least 75% of deliveries ignore it and ring the doorbell, waking up the baby who has inevitably only just dropped off.

Can’t win.
