To want a house with walks 'from the door'?

Not through busy roads?

DH thinks this is a wild expectation. I think it's common in lots of areas.

We are considering moving further out from London. We are in the Home Counties having moved out once already. I want proper countryside. He thinks this is some crazy and impossible dream Xmas Hmm, city boy Xmas Grin!

Budget is £400k-ish to be comfortable. Up to £500k if we were feeling a bit more daring. Anywhere in the south half of England really.

AIBU?

We have country walks from our door. And we’re five minutes (by car) from the main station of our city. Midlands.

May be the only good thing about having moved out of London, though.

Suffolk!

highlandcoo · 07/12/2020 20:38

Blondiney you could look at Disley and Poynton, maybe High Lane as well as Marple. Anywhere within striking distance of Lyme Park and Middlewood Way is pretty good for walking.
From Bramhall you can reach country lanes within 10 minutes and it's quite pretty but more fields than hills and open countryside.
Bromeliad, XherdanShaqiri, Honeyroar - there are a few of us - I think we need a S Manchester walking group once fun is allowed again Smile

A very reasonable expectation OP and well woth seeking out. Good luck!

Oh Suffolk mentioned again. Will have a look, thanks.

I have a major coast path 10mins walk from my house.

linerforlife · 07/12/2020 20:41

I live in the south east 1hr by train to London and I have walks from the door. I live in a very large village (has its own supermarket etc). Takes me approx 3 mins to walk from my front door, along my road, through a gate and into countryside walks. Not unusual where I live to be honest. My house is worth around £300k for a 4 bed terrace, and is less than 10 yrs old.

Meatshake · 07/12/2020 20:42

Berkshire here,

Gintime74 · 07/12/2020 20:43

I was just telling DH that this is what I want, there are lovely walks here but from our house you need to walk 20 minutes through busy roads or town centre to get to them.

unchienandalusia · 07/12/2020 20:45

We have it. Surrey hills. Love. It.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 07/12/2020 20:46

We live like that. Walk out our door and got a lovely walk by a river with 1.5 hour strolls. Love it.

Onedropbeat · 07/12/2020 20:47

Used to live in small villages in Buckinghamshire which had walks from the door

I also lived in a town in Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire both of which had walks from the door so it doesn’t need to be remote necessarily

Just not overly built up

NeverForgetYourDreams · 07/12/2020 20:47

We on the edge of a major town in south England. 4 bed houses about £450k

Onedropbeat · 07/12/2020 20:47

Then again the houses were about £600k for a 2 bed Confused

We're at the far end of the Met line in Bucks in a large village - 30 mins by train to Marylebone. 4 pubs, all the basics in terms of shops, v good schools. Walk from the front door and within 5 mins you're in ancient woodland. It's too far from the sea for my liking but that's me being picky...

SussexBonfireViking · 07/12/2020 20:49

I'm in Sussex (see the name!!) and we can get straight up on to the Downs where I live - I'm halfway between Eastbourne and Brighton

midnightstar66 · 07/12/2020 20:52

I live near the centre of Edinburgh. There is a massive networ of cycle paths that I happen to live right on. Dc walk to school without ever encountering a road and you can walk/cycle miles on them in any direction to many lovely parks and more rural locations or beaches. You're never far from a path access here

Sonofapizzaman · 07/12/2020 20:52

What do you actually mean by walks though?

ImAllOut · 07/12/2020 20:53

We're in Wales. Basically the whole of Wales is like this Grin living near the Monmouthshire/Brecon canal us great for walks.

sosotired1 · 07/12/2020 20:54

Surrey and Surrey Hills - so much national trust/RSPB/forestry commission land that can be walked - and still less than an hour from London. Having lived very rurally (loads of fields but not loads of walks) and a few other places that have been mentioned above, this is the only place where there is so much land to actually roam on your doorstep.

LandlockedBlues · 07/12/2020 20:55

I'm in East London, and a few minutes walk from several thousand acres of green space (Wanstead Flats leading into Epping Forest).

bestbefore · 07/12/2020 20:56

I have this, live on edge of a country park. Walks either left or right from the drive and in fact there's an hour long circular walk which starts in one direction and finishes in the other. Kids walk to school and there's a pub 2 mins away and yet we are 30 mins from the City. Not perfect for me though as I'd like a bit more town facilities - but it's good and we do have facilities which I should use more.

merryhouse · 07/12/2020 20:57

ah, I love RightMove.

"I know we have a swimming pool, but look how tasteful we are! We have reed diffusers! and Portmeirion!" (even if our "entrance hall" doesn't have a door to the outside...)

madcatladyforever · 07/12/2020 20:57

Easy, South Downs. Loads of lovely places with walks from the door. I had a house with 2 bedrooms right on the edge of fabulous walks just outside Seaford for £275k. There are loads more lovely cottages all over the south downs well within your price range. I live on Exmoor now. I love it.

We used to live in Edinburgh! Loved walking up Arthur's Seat and along Portobello. Sadly, work is keeping us reasonably near london. Don't mind a slightly lengthy commute, as we won't be going back to FT working in the office, but we still need to be able to get to London fairly frequently. N

We lived towards the end of the tube line on the Essex/London border and had to only cross the road to be in a forest/on the edge of countryside (Hainault Forest). This was ages ago so I've no idea of house prices there now but it was cheap for London.
