To be really irritated by how much our kittens are pooing?

I have two kittens. They are about five months old and each do about five shits a day. The first thing they do when they wake up from a snooze is go and have a shit. After each meal they go and have a shit. I’m sick and tired of them shitting so much and having to clear it up. I change the litter tray twice a day and I am still convinced I can smell poo. I feed them the recommended amount of ludicrously expensive special food that I got from the vet. They are fine and healthy, they just won’t stop pooing! Is this normal?

I'd look through Zooplus - try some high meat content brands and different litters.

There are often offers and trail packs - ours don't always like ie eat the best wet brands but we had more luck with the high meat content dry food.

Higher meat content does seem to mean slightly less poo and less smell.

When we get to a Sainsburys - mine also like their hypoallergenic dry food which is grain free.

birdseeder · 07/12/2020 20:02

Are they on wet or dry food? We had 2 kittens and switched to dry food, much less smelly shites. They prob hate me for it, but they still eat it.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 07/12/2020 20:12

Can you buy actual sawdust? White cat litter is absolutely useless and smells horrible. DH has a lathe and was creating large amounts of sawdust so one day I tried it in the tray and it worked much better to contain the smell than any commercial cat litter we ever bought.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/12/2020 20:19

Cats are supposed to have a litter tray each so get a second one. They will typically have a one each so the girl cat you can just scoop the poops. Then the boy one you can change once a day.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/12/2020 20:19

Also, our cats eat an entirely dry diet (plus water to drink). Makes the poops less smelly imo.

I thought it was supposed to be one more than the number of cats - so we have two cats and have never had less than three trays.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2020 20:49

We had 2 trays for 2 cats but they only used one. They have an XL one with raised sides although they rarely use it now

GoldfishParade · 07/12/2020 21:03

I use catsan clumping litter and I love it. Condenses everything you need to clear out in a big hard clump leaving the rest pretty much intact m. It seems much more hygienic than non clumping where you're obviously going to miss some parts

I have a 4.5 month old kitten and for the first week or 2 he was pooing a lot, farting a lot and it all smelt awful and the poos were a bit soft. He was being fed on royal canin wet and dry as per what the breeder told me to feed him.

I did a bit of research and stopped the wet food completely and am gradually weaning him off the royal canin dry kitten and onto Orijen cat and kitten.

It's very high in protein and now he olny poos once a day and its firm and the farting has THANK GOD stopped completely.

RUOKHon · 07/12/2020 21:11

Yes the farting too! Okay, definitely going to change his diet. Poor old smelly cat.

It’s weird because mine did the opposite to many on here and their bowels settled on Royal Canin vet gastrointestinal. I give them the wet pouches and dry biscuits plus a bit of the dental food. They poop small firm no smell stools once a day and their fur is gleaming. When they were kittens they had constant diarrhoea and greasy fur on the very expensive imported German cat food I had been advised by pet forums to try. I don’t think there is one rule. It’s trial and error.

I think the German foods were high in offal (there were about 20 chicken hearts and a zillion kidneys in some of the food. So high meat but way more offal than a cat would naturally source. Some cats can’t do any grain, luckily mine are ok with that.

I was so happy when dear kitty was neutered and could go outside! She much prefers crapping in the woods behind our house and I'm much happier not cleaning out a litter tray 3 times a day. The smell was so bad I couldn't leave it! She's a year old now and if she does use the tray I don't have to clean up as soon as I enter the house, I need to be in the same room as the tray. Before I could smell it from the front door!

Ideasplease322 · 07/12/2020 21:54

When you say they will be outdoor do you mean access to outdoors, but still living in the house?

I have two separate fiends who pushed the cats outside with no indoor access. I hope you aren’t going to do that?

No! I just meant they’ll have a cat flap so they can come and go as they please. We are training them to be lap cats and tolerate enormous amounts of fuss.

Wood pellet litter imo is much cleaner and has less odour than gravel type litter. I have used both. I never heard of getting a special litter tray for wood pellets! I have a pets at home hooded litter tray and it's perfect.

Brilliant - and my sympathies on the excess pooing. my kitten never pooed that Much. She was on Lily’s kitchen kitten food,
Longdistance · 07/12/2020 22:35

I only came in here for the kitten pictures.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 07/12/2020 22:37

Shittens is my favourite new word.

I can’t offer any help re the little bundles, I’m allergic to them so haven’t ever owned one.

Ibizafun · 07/12/2020 22:59

My two are same age and are fed on Thrive which is grain free.. maybe I’ve got used to it but it doesn’t stink too much. They shit a couple of times each a day.

Ibizafun · 07/12/2020 23:05

Someone mentioned Fellini supplement.. be careful as I used to sprinkle ‘a bit’ on top of their chicken or salmon and their potassium level turned out to be sky high.. needs to be measured out exactly

Poorlykitten · 07/12/2020 23:15

No dry food! Or at least not mainly dry food. It’s been shown to cause problems, stuffed with useless carbs and not enough water in it.

Beecham · 07/12/2020 23:23

Mine are the same age and eat whatever pouches and dried food I can find at the supermarket, so Felix, whiskers and Tesco. They poo once or twice a day. They are very healthy and happy with lovely coats.

AlwaysLatte · 07/12/2020 23:33

I'm definitely going to use the raw (frozen) stuff when I get a cat. The smell of a litter tray is horrific without, by all accounts.
