To say the office is just too cold?

The thermostat on my office wall says 12 degrees, it feels much colder than that.
I am wearing my big outdoor coat, as are all of my colleagues, as well as some also carrying hot water bottles. My toes are freezing.

The heating isn't working, so AIBU to say this is too cold for us to be working in the office? Management seems to think it's fine...

Prepared to be told I'm wrong as we can't quite see our breath yet!

There's a difference between being at 12c inside where you're stuck at a desk or 12c outside where you're generally better dressed for it and able to move about. I worked with horses for years in all conditions but rarely felt really cold because I was so active.

What does your manager say? Are they at the same temperature?

freezingmytoesoff · 07/12/2020 15:46

@GhoulWithADragonTattoo No, managers are not in the office.

It's cold if you're not used to it, yes. The key is to wear layers - eg a vest, 2 wool jumpers, 2 pairs of socks. I'm working from home and it's 9 degrees today.

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 15:47

9 degrees inside that is.

Calmandmeasured1 · 07/12/2020 15:50

12 degrees is freezing.
😂😂😂 What school did you go to?

IJustWantSomeBees · 07/12/2020 16:08

@Bonkerz

My children are sat in classrooms colder than this and have to layer their clothing accordingly due to covid and ventilation. I'm sure an adult can adjust.
Why should they have to adjust? Hmm Even if they do it's going to lower their productivity if they're constantly focusing on the sensation of being uncomfrotable.

When that same adult can wfh, they shouldn’t need to adjust. It’s not a competition about who can work in the coldest conditions.

Not on

JustDanceAddict · 07/12/2020 16:12

In my last job the office (in winter) was absolutely freezing. We all invested in thermals, wore our coats etc. Was prob around the same as you describe & they never did anything about it!

CharitySchmarity · 07/12/2020 16:17

My workplace was about 14 today. It would probably have been about 18 with the windows shut but it has been decided that we should have good ventilation at all times when customers are there, and we can wear as many layers as we like, even hats etc. I did find it cold at first, but I have a little stash of woollies there now to layer up when I need to. I agree with the ventilation idea and am happy to make some adjustments.

Oh the pendants are out in force. Have none of you ever said "its freezing" when you've been cold? Obviously that's what I meant.

megletthesecond · 07/12/2020 19:12

Way too cold if you are sitting down.

CottonSock · 07/12/2020 19:14

I'd be miserable and off home.if the work can be done from there

freezingmytoesoff · 07/12/2020 20:02

I'm not holding my breath that it'll be fixed tomorrow, and they definitely will not let us WFH if it's not...

It's rubbish being that cold at work OP, you have my sympathies. My office is a mish-mash, Baltic down our end but roasting for one of the other teams who sit by the servers.

I remarked about wanting to WFH again where it was warmer and my boss made some comment about having to pay for the heating. I responded that I'd willingly pay for heating in the office if it were even an option to have it on!! Better than wearing my fingerless gloves and 2 jumpers! Hmm

freezingmytoesoff · 08/12/2020 09:25

Update: heating still broken but I've been given a space heater. Better than nothing!
