To want to strangle Noddy fucking Holder?

Every year since I can remember I've had to put up with him screeching IT'S CHRISTMAS from the first of December, and even earlier this year. I can't stand Christmas music, it's the same sodding songs on repeat every bloody year, the soundtrack hasn't changed since about 1990.

Thank fuck for podcasts.

So, AIBU to wish that 2020 is the last year we have to put up with this, and crowdfund for a desert island to accommodate Noddy Holder, Mariah Carey and Shaking fucking Stevens?

I read somewhere that he makes around half a million quid a year in royalties just from this song being played.
Not bad considering it's years old!

Jona Lewie doesn't do too badly out of Stop The Cavalry - something like £60,000 per year, I gather. Tony Mortimer likely does well out of Stay Another Day too. Ironically, Stop The Cavalry was never intended specifically as a Christmas song (Stiff Records intervened when they saw an opportunity) and Stay Another Day has bugger-all to do with Christmas.

I hadn't heard any Christmas songs at all this year until today when one came on the radio. The only shops I've been in are Tesco and the Co-Op and they haven't played any Christmas songs that I've noticed yet.

That, along with the fact that we haven't been to any garden centres or had any festive drinks at any coffee shops, means that for me it just doesn't feel like Christmas at all. We haven't been to any seasonal markets or any of the usual local Christmas events. The schools in which I've been working recently haven't been singing carols or practising nativity performances. It feels so flat this year.

For that reason op, yabu. Very much so. Hearing "It's Chriiiiiiistmaaaaaas!!!!!!" on the radio this morning cheered me up massively and made me smile whilst dancing about the kitchen.

It was the massive sideburns. They were trendy in the 70s but his were huge even for the 70

Yes and no - sideburns were an aggravating factor (but we were all used to seeing men with them then, including big ones) and it's more something about his face (unusually flat??) and the way his hair grows, and the set of his eyes

I used to have a huge crush on Jim Lea!

@AuntieStella

I read an interview with Noddy Holder a few years ago in which he was asked if he was sick of hearing it

His answer (and I paraphrase) was: 'No, never, it's still under copyright so I'm hearing my pension'

Bing and Bowie. Now that's a scary thought. God, I hate that rascally rabbit.

Try working at a place where the random selection wasn't random. Tweedly dee pretty much every other song. The entire staff was ready to unleash Christmas spirit.

But because I can't give some of you coak, here's the next best thing.

Itttttttttttttttt's Chriiissssstmasssss! (if it helps say it in Captain Caveman's voice)

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/12/2020 07:09

I love it ! Are you the Grinch ? Grin

Like many people I have had a hard year . Worked twice as hard through the pandemic, no holidays , lost relatives and breakdown of 20 year relationship. This morning I finally cracked when Shaking Stevens came on the radio . I burst into tears because I so want to meet friends, have a drink and dance to cheesy Christmas music!

jay55 · 07/12/2020 08:13

All I've heard this year is Mariah fucking Carey all over Instagram.
I'd happily enjoy Noddy Holder instead.

TheRogueApostrophe · 07/12/2020 09:19

I say YABU but this comes from someone who's had every radio station in the house and cars tuned into Heart Xmas since December 1st Xmas Grin

It is all the same songs on a loop and I love them all, old and new. Boney M, Leona Lewis, Nat King Cole, East 17, Johnny Mathis, Shakin' Stevens, Wham! and, yes, Slade! I love them all.

Like a PP, the only one I don't like listening to (but it is a beautiful song in itself) is Little Drummer Boy because of the association with the Moors murders.

IamMaz · 07/12/2020 10:28

I HATE [with a passion] hearing Wham singing 'GEV you my heart' instead of 'GAVE you my heart' as in Last Christmas.
Cover versions are fine!
But GEV????? Really???? WTF???

RaspberryCoulis · 07/12/2020 10:36

George Michael was a talented man who wrote some amazing songs.

That is not one of them.
