AIBU to go to the doctor?

I found a lump in my boob on Friday night and am worried.

I am a part time secondary school teacher. Although my attendance is excellent so far, lots of other staff have been out for COVID isolation, students have had a patchy education.

I work Mondays, Tuesday is my day off. AIBU to want to see a gp on Monday and miss work? Should I wait till Tuesday? Or is this too important and I should go Monday?

Phone the doctor ASAP and take the soonest that you can get. However having experienced this twice myself, the doctor took my word for it that there was a lump and put me straight on the two week pathway without even having to see me so that was that .You might get referred without having to even go to the GP. It may not be the same everywhere but that was just my experience

Pumkinseed · 06/12/2020 09:38

I have been sent twice my way after seeing the GP with the advice to come back after my period if the lump is still there.

Not sure if this was correct but the GP would not refer me there and then.

ChallyCreaks · 06/12/2020 09:42

My GP is still only doing telephone consultations at the moment so you may be able to speak with the doctor over the phone tomorrow evening for their advice.

Thank you everyone, so much.

It just dawned on me that as I was having night sweats last night (I'm trying to avoid google but it's apparently a bad sign when you have a lump like this) I probably won't be able to go to work or the gp anyway until I have a covid test?? What a time to be alive huh!

I'll go for a covid test today and then my actions after that will depend on when the results come back.

Thanks again

You can go to gp without covid test. I've just been to mine few days ago.

The sweats can be absolutely unrelated. Step away from google unless it's to search for funny cat pics

I would probably wait until the Tuesday. More people phoning for appointments on a Monday anyway.

Sweetsforsweets · 06/12/2020 10:36

I’d go on Tuesday

Defaultuser · 06/12/2020 11:00

One day won't make a difference but as people have said you might not get an appointment straight away so might be worth phoning/getting telephone appointment on the Monday?

I found a lump just after my periods came back after breastfeeding. The GP asked if I wanted to wait to see if it was hormonal but I asked to take the referral and if the lump went away I could cancel it (took 5 weeks to get the appointment). Might depend on the GP though.

BlueBottle19 · 06/12/2020 11:09

One day wont make a difference. Go on the Tuesday. It will be less stressful in the long run rather than trying to organise the appointment with work

Waiting to see if its hormonal is also a perfectly sensible approach, and again realistically one or two weeks isnt going to change much. In that time if its getting bigger you call your GP sooner

PrivateD00r · 06/12/2020 11:16

Your period is coming, night sweats are normal! I wouldn't be going for a covid test personally, especially if it means a delay in seeing your GP. Unless of course you actually have a high temperature. Personally I would go to work, ring the GP at 8am and see when they can see you. If you cannot leave school mid shift so to speak, then try and get an appt on the Tues. Sitting at home worrying won't help, especially when there's still a good chance you won't be seen on Monday.

SecretDoor · 06/12/2020 11:16

Can you complete an a consult via the NHS app or your surgery website?
This should trigger a quick telephone response if you have a good GP surgery. Then you might be able to negotiate the time of a face to face consultation

MollyButton · 06/12/2020 11:23

At My GP (and all other medical places) if you actually have to go in, they take your temperature at the door, and will turn you away if too high. But the first step is always a telephone consult, here.

LindaEllen · 06/12/2020 11:24

I think with lumps it's always best to get them seen to - but keep in mind that the vast majority of breast lumps are nothing to worry about, particularly if you're under 50.

I have had a lump in my breast since I was 18, which I freaked out about at the time, but it was nothing - and it's still there, at exactly the same size as it was then!

Thanks all @PrivateD00r great advice, I'll take it, thank you xx
