Have I missed something?

When was there a huge shift from ‘given’ to ‘gifted’? I didn’t get that email. If I had I’d have sent a few choice words back.

I don’t like it, I tell you. Who do I need to call to get it changed back? Do I need to blame slebs on Insta for talking constantly about all the random crap they get given for free?!

I’m sorry if there’s already been threads on this. I am a dipper-inner-and-outer.

AIBU for despising the overused new term of gifted? To me it still means kids that are good at things and stuff.

Are you aware that gifted is both a noun and a verb, not just an adjective? Seems like you have misunderstood the word

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 05/12/2020 23:17

I almost posted this the other day so yanbu imo.

But I actually googled it and apparently it has always been a verb and therefore to day you were gifted, or gifted something has always been correct.
I still hate it though. Along with gotten. That can get to fuck too.

Winterwoollies · 05/12/2020 23:20

I’m not denying the definition of the word means it is applicable in these circumstances, I’m saying it appears that suddenly everyone is using it and I don’t know why!

Probably because in recent years, influencers legally have to show when an item in a post has been gifted or if the post is sponsored? They could get away with no transparency before. I guess “gifted” sounds better than “paid ad”

Winterwoollies · 05/12/2020 23:22

Maybe I’m noticing it more on here as it is the season of gift gifting... fa la la.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 05/12/2020 23:24

100% agree with you OP! I don’t understand what it brings that ‘give’ doesn’t accurately convey.

But... I do use ‘regift’, so I’m not sure if I’m being a hypocrite. ‘Re-give’ doesn’t quite work...

CounsellorTroi · 05/12/2020 23:47

To me, if you "gift" something to someone it sounds like it was something that belonged to you, rather than something you've bought especially for them. I don't see what gifted adds to a sentence when given works just as well.

jessstan1 · 05/12/2020 23:48

I hate it too and see it a lot on here, even, "I got gifted". I've no idea what is wrong with, "I was given", or "I will give".

However, apparently it is not strictly incorrect use of the English language, just hasn't been used in the UK until recent years.

newnewnewbuild · 05/12/2020 23:49

I know what you mean - same with "sourced" instead of "bought" Grin

JohannaSpyri · 05/12/2020 23:56

The word "place" has been replaced by "space" "It's a lovely space" when it used to be "it's a lovely place"

baubling · 05/12/2020 23:59

If you think that's bad OP, how about this sign, which adorns a car park entrance near me.

Follow directional signage

ChocBeforeCock · 05/12/2020 23:59

I have noticed this too! See also obligated instead of obliged.

Poppyolive90 · 06/12/2020 00:01

Oh yes watching home renovation shows, I love to count how many times they use the word space when they could have just said room Grin

Oh this one drives me up the wall! Curated is another one. "I curated this vintage collection". Nah love, you whipped around the charity shops on a Saturday afternoon and are now reselling it for €€€!
Winterwoollies · 06/12/2020 00:12

Oh wow, you’ve all added to my woes/troubles/grievances with all those other new trendy words that I hadn’t noticed I’d noticed!

OP posts:
Winterwoollies · 06/12/2020 00:14

Curated is a doozy. Festival curators...

Everyone seems to “envisage”something nowadays.

Back in the day I’d have “thought” or “imagined” something.

“The decor is exactly how I envisaged it would be” blah blah blah.
Is it. Is it really. Prick.

It is doing my head in.

When did envisage become a fashionable word? We now have a bunch of numpties using the word. Half of whom probably couldnt even spell it... Sigh.

Seeingadistance · 06/12/2020 00:41

The word "given" seems to be pretty much extinct on MN.

jessstan1 · 06/12/2020 00:59

''envisge' is alright, it has emphasis. I've heard that all my life in some contexts.

'Gifting' and 'gifted' are horrible though.

katy1213 · 06/12/2020 01:08

Purposefully.

grassisjeweled · 06/12/2020 01:09

Couldn't agree more.

SIL used 'quit moaning' or something the other day

😱

grassisjeweled · 06/12/2020 01:11

I got gifted
^
Can't cringe anymore, please just take me away

Mamamamycorona · 06/12/2020 02:37

Oh lord it irritates me, people on local fb buy and swap groups are forever requesting items to be gifted to them. Makes me want to poke my eyeballs with knitting needles.

NigellaAwesome · 06/12/2020 03:12

My DC use a lot of gotten, and talk about being in line, rather than queuing. I hate it.

Changethetoner · 06/12/2020 03:22

burglarized used instead of burgled.
Heard frequently on Judge Judy - so I'm assuming American language.
