Cheese on toast..again. How often do you have a cba day?

At the moment I’m a sahm to my toddler. I generally make/cook every meal from scratch, lots and fruit and veg etc. Then maybe simple put stuff in the oven bits like fishfingers or a takeaway at the weekend.
I’ve had 3 days this week of really thinking I can’t be arsed and just having cheese or beans on toast. How often do you feel like this and do most of you cook from scratch or just chuck oven meals in?

My toddler has beans on toast at least two meals a week (lunch or dinner) and cheese on toast probably once. That’s because she’s fussy and despite my best efforts barely eats any proper food (she’s all about the snacks). She definitely eats better at lunch so by the time dinner comes round if I’m tired theres no way I’m cooking her a special meal for her to ignore. Always give tomatoes and cucumber on the side too - not that it’s always eaten, mind...

Thefirstnohell · 05/12/2020 18:08

Sounds like this the perfect opportunity to get him in to the swing of things now op before you return to work ... seriously, this weekend sounds like an ideal time to do this, start as you mean to go on! Smile

UnholyConfessions · 05/12/2020 18:09

This is me most weeks. Today I cooked sea bass at lunch and a (carb free for me aka no wraps) fajita for dinner.

Tomorrow will be a slow cooked chilli but evening meal will be cereal and mon - thurs were eating frozen basics ready meals with a hefty helping of frozen veg or soup or sandwiches.

There’s just me and DC and reality is something has to give somewhere. Some people it’s cleaning schedule, others exercise. Me it’s cooking. I can’t do everything and I cba to even try because the burnout would be real.

Whenwillow · 05/12/2020 18:15

That sounds fine to me OP. I used to jazz it up for my kids by mixing salad, mayo and cheese, egg, cold meat or tuna and making a tortilla wrap. A proper dinner doesn't have to be hot.
Makes me grin when we worry so over what the kids eat then they turn into teenagers and young adults and eat crap/drink/smoke.
Just 2 adults here now and our easy dinner is chilli and rice, or something I batched cooked that I haul out of the freezer.
Or, occasionally, a tortilla wrap...

Cba78 · 05/12/2020 18:19

@AurorasLighthouse I love fishfingers too 😂I usually do her homemade wedges and peas with it and that’s one of my easier meals. So nice sometimes to just put something in the oven instead of chopping and faffing.

@Thefirstnohell Definitely! I’m already sat here feeling pretty pissed off (and he knows) I’d love if someone made me something for once too 😂

Admittedly, I do quite miss the days when I’d get in from work and just sort something quick for myself like a tortilla wrap or even crackers and Philadelphia in front of the tv.
With kids, it becomes a whole different ballgame with trying to get all the fruit and veg in everyday.

@Whenwillow Ha ha, my friend said similar, that by the time they start school, they’re stuffing their face with Haribo from their friends etc 🙈we can but try though

Not very often but I am a SAHM so I feel bad just having a quick meal.

I don’t think I’ve ever done cheese on toast for my CBA days tbh. Ours are more oven chips and fish fingers, ham egg and oven chips, or pesto pasta and frozen veg. Maybe once a fortnight?

PurBal · 05/12/2020 18:33

I love cheese on toast, I consider it a treat. We batch cook one pot dishes (enough for 2-3 meals) a couple of times a week. Bolognese type things.

cuppateabiscuits · 05/12/2020 18:42

As long as you child is eating and feed I wouldn't worry at all.
If your toddler is eating carrot sticks, cucumber and mushrooms they have a good palate... wish mine would
Meals sometimes meals need to be easy nothing wrong with that especially at this time of year.
Beans on toast is a good option for easy.
No matter what the bread

Cba78 · 05/12/2020 18:48

@cuppateabiscuits Luckily she eats really well in general so far! hoping it stays like that..
Maybe we should change this to a very simple, no effort dishes that are also v healthy for toddlers 😅

We have cheese & bean tosties at least twice a week, filling & satisfying. When I was growing up our choice for tea would be jam sandwich, peanut butter sandwich or cheese in toast, our mum didn't get home from work till late so this was something we could make ourselves. Not ideal but we survived & all turned out to be healthy adults

Chickenwing · 05/12/2020 19:10

I'm the other way- cook properly like once or twice a week, the other days its things shoved into the oven/microwave or a takeaway. Ive been very lazy this year as lost all motivation for anything, but who cares?

Takemetothebar · 05/12/2020 19:17

We have a take away once a week. Aside from that, I cook from scratch every day, with some cheats......

I buy frozen peas and sweet corn, I buy frozen sliced mushrooms and frozen mash (the potatoes, butter and seasoning only type). I buy frozen sliced peppers for fajitas etc.

I make porridge over night, and I put dinner in the slow oven at lunchtime.

Zofloramummy · 05/12/2020 19:27

Does your DP do any housework at all? Are you shattered by the weekend because you are shouldering the full load of housekeeping, cooking and life management? If so you need a formal discussion about how things will look when you go back to work because otherwise it’s likely you will still be doing all of that and working.

Cheese on toast is fine, I’m not feeling well today and my dd (9) has had beans on toast for lunch and jacket potato and chicken for tea, she’s also had yoghurt, fruit and chocolate as I cba.

Zofloramummy · 05/12/2020 19:28

*formal = frank

MessAllOver · 05/12/2020 19:29

Most days. I have so much work at the moment that 'can be arsed' days are the exception. I try to cook properly three times a week (chilli, salmon or other fish, risotto, roast, homemade pie etc.), but otherwise it's a running rotation of shop bought fishcakes and veg mash, cheese on toast, scrambled eggs, cheesy beans in jacket potato, fish fingers sausages, sandwiches, pasta bake.

I do always try to make sure DS gets at least 5-6 portions of fruit and veg a day even if it leads to some slightly odd combinations. So we'll have sides of boiled carrots and sweetcorn with our eggs or cheese on toast.

userxx · 05/12/2020 20:01

I'd choose beans on toast over over most things. Love it.

fatkitchen · 05/12/2020 21:03

Past few months I've really struggled with meal planning. I still cook each day but I only plan for maybe two days at a time and shop on the third day for extra supplies.
I'm just really bored with food. I find eating boring .

fatkitchen · 05/12/2020 21:15

My cba meal is Mexican black beans in tortilla wraps with cheese and cucumber/ tomato on the side. They love it .

YoBeaches · 06/12/2020 05:07

Try cooking bigger portions that you can freeze for the kids and stick in the freezer - lasagne and cottage pie are great for cba days.

I balance dds meals pretty well and nothing wrong with beans or cheese on toast at all if it's balanced with the rest of the week.

garlictwist · 06/12/2020 05:36

DH and I cannot be arsed more than we can. We eat sandwiches most days for dinner. We don't have kids though.

Parker231 · 06/12/2020 05:46

I rarely cook from scratch and we all love cheese on toast. Everyone is healthy so nothing to worry about.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/12/2020 08:06

Jacket potato done in the microwave, with beans and cheese.

If dh is out and it’s just me, pasta with grated cheese.
Or fish fingers and a pack of microwave chips, both kept in freezer for visiting Gdcs when they’re too tired/famished to wait for anything else.
