How bad are my eating habits?

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 16:06

I do know I don't have the healthiest of diets, but I'm wondering if I could have some Mumsnet wisdom on the extent to which it is bad.

The way I eat currently makes me happy, so if it's only a bit bad, then I'll carry on with it, but if it's really shockingly awful, then I'll regrettably have to make some changes. So that's why I'm asking!

I don't really have a concept of how many calories I'm eating a day, although I do know that it's more than recommended amount of sugar.

I've attached screenshots of everything what I've had to eat or drink each day for the past 6 days.

This is AIBU after all, so AIBU to eat like this?

You seem to eat a lot of rubbishy snacks late at night. I think your diet could do with a some improvement. Can you try and fix one thing set at time e.g start with no eating after 8pm?

You are the same height and weight as me I think. I don’t think you are overweight but you could be a lot healthier.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/12/2020 17:44
@SchrodingersImmigrant "salad" this week has been a mix of a spinach, kale, carrot, cabbage lettuce (the three salad bags attached - without the mayonnaise!) and cucumber and spring onions
That's not bad. Cabbage is great source of vitamins. I would honestly swal out some high sugar stuff for fruit. It's still sugar but less and with added benefits. And tasty.

You know how it says "Nutella"? Is that just a spoon of nutella?😂

letsgoandtango · 05/12/2020 17:45

Way, way too much sugar. Never mind weight, you are putting yourself at serious risk of diabetes.
Echoing PP, I would put everything into myfitnesspal (it's really not too much of a faff, especially as once you have "found" a food, it's saved in your recents for next time) and see how much sugar you are really eating. I know sweeteners aren't the best either but if you are making all these sweet drinks at home you can start switching sugar for stevia, for example.

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 17:45

@midnightstar66 I was wondering if someone would comment on the day I had coleslaw for breakfast haha😂 I was craving it! And the lentils- I was in a rush that day!

Thanks for your reply

It looks like a lot of sugar and processed foods. So maybe quite salty too.

I'd try to add more low fat, no sugar dairy like Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese etc to meals or snacks.

Maybe some raw veg with homemade hummus or something for snacks.

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 17:46

@SchrodingersImmigrant yes😂😂

😂
You know, it's bloody lovely on a slice of pineapple. I used to snack on that when I was a kid.

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 17:50

@MatildaTheCat Sunday's wrap, Monday's falafel and Wednesday's panini was from Pret -yes. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday salads were homemade - the photos I've been in one of the comments above!

Do you eat any fruit at all?

It's not great, but it would be a lot better if you added in more fruit and veg!

Nottherealslimshady · 05/12/2020 17:53

You eat alot of "unhealthy" food but also alot of "healthy" food. If you dont have an issue with weight then it's fine.

Chumleymouse · 05/12/2020 17:54

That looks good, I just live on biscuits and I don’t eat anything that’s green.

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 18:06

@SchrodingersImmigrant don't go giving me ideas!

😁 Swap that for couple of slices of fresh pineapple with bit of nutella. So much better😁
Next day you can have some cinnamon pineapple (i just make it on non stick pan) with yogurt.
Tada! Fruit in your diary

@ForTheLoveOfCatFood I've included every drink on there, so yeah - much more hot drinks than drinking water.
Fresh foods I could eat more of, that's true

OP posts:
BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 19:37

@teezletangler no you're right, I don't tend to eat fruit. It seems so high in sugar for something that I find okay but not delicious.
As someone whose main issue is sugar (as opposed to wanting to lose weight or anything) it seems silly for me to swap my delicious foods that are high in sugar for a food that isn't exciting to eat that is equally high in sugar.
What do people think about that?
If I'm going to swap them for something that isn't exciting to eat, it might as well be something with less sugar in, right?

OP posts:
BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 19:44

@letsgoandtango very interesting points.
If I swapped all of those sugary drinks (caramel lattes/hot chocolate/milkshake) for lattes with no sugar or flat whites, would you still say I'm at risk of diabetes from the rest of my diet or would doing that be enough?

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/12/2020 19:48

I've just realised about the diabetes. The only way op would be putting herself in risk of diabetes would be if she put on weight due to sugar consumption, not by the sugar consumption itself.

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 20:04

@ButterboxSpoon surprisingly I am in the UK- I just love an iced drink!
I have logged it onto My Fitness Pal in the past and seen that I go over the sugar limit every day. The limit seems so impossibly low to me - if I cut out sugary foods, I get so grumpy and snappy, until I eventually crack after 4 days and eat a whole load of sugary stuff!

OP posts:
BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 20:07

@AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings thanks for your comment! I was quite surprised to hear that you think it could be quite a salty diet- which of the foods would you say are salty?

OP posts:
BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 20:09

@Nottherealslimshady I think that's summarised me fairly well- I think it seems from everyone is saying that the 'proper meals' that I eat are fairly healthy (lentils and rice, chicken and spinach, cabbage etc) but I do eat a load of rubbish on top of that too!

OP posts:
EntreMummy · 05/12/2020 20:37

It looks pretty appalling to me if I’m honest.

No proper meals - a load of processed pre-packaged stuff and then a ton of sugary drinks.

I don’t get how you can live like this. I think I’d be craving a solid meal if I were you.

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 20:52

@entremummy oh really! Oh dear.
I would have thought that I had a proper meal for lunch and dinner on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday - would you not agree?
And then I agree that I only had one proper meal a day for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.

I've looked up the sugar in a Pret caramel latte and it is 11.3g for the latte and 12.1g for the syrup, so 23.4g in each one of those.
How many of those would you recommend a day as a max then? Or would the number I have be acceptable without the syrup?

OP posts:
Misandrylovescompany · 05/12/2020 21:02

God I would get a thumping headache from even one day of this. I think you seriously need to cut down on the sugar OP. Knock off all the sweet milky drinks for starters.

BovrilLavigne · 05/12/2020 21:08

@Misandrylovescompany oh dear! When you say milky, do you mean the milk is a problem too? Would it not be enough to switch from caramel lattes to lattes?

OP posts:
OoohTheStatsDontLie · 05/12/2020 21:14

I think it's ok, it seems like you eat very healthily but snack quite badly which I do too. At least you are in a good position if you want to do anything about it, as you like healthy nutritious food already. You're probably getting most of the nutrients you need just lots of extra sugar on top. Can you just cut down a bit instead of stop? Like maybe have some protein for breakfast and then you'll be more full and skip the morning treat and save it for the afternoon instead of having two treats? Xx
