How will stuff stay in the bag?

How are those nine even cuts in the plate)

Why would you KNIT bunting?

What’s the triffid thing all about?

AND WHY SO COY ABOUT PROPER PHOTOS OF THE FINISHED RESULT?

I was in the mood for some Christmas crafting, but my god that is shit.

That's adorable flying saucer @SinkGirl

SinkGirl · 05/12/2020 16:20

If you’re desperate for some Christmas crafting there’s some nice stuff here, but also some are batshit (who makes a wreath out of ice skates?!)

That flying saucer is lovely. I wish I could crochet.

You are the crafting oracle @SinkGirl

I’m an addict 😬 I haven’t had much time for the last few years so I’ve been going a bit bonkers lately, even making stuff for myself which was previously unheard of.

@VinylDetective crochet is so easy, you definitely could! I learnt to knit first (when I was about 30) so found crochet really easy after that. Give it a go!

BefuddledPerson · 05/12/2020 16:44

Its all a matter of taste, different people like different things. I bookmarked two of the patterns and liked most of them.

BefuddledPerson · 05/12/2020 16:47

Case in point being those Country Living projects seemed mostly very naff to me.

But it'd be boring if we all liked the same thing.

I'm trying the onion-stained wall hanging, it'll be nice in my summerhouse and I love reusing old fabric.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/12/2020 17:04

And just like 5 minute crafts, insufficient info or just .. wrong... or it relies on you having skills that make or break the item.

The photo album, hand made paper is not cheap, you also need quality photo prints, and nice handwriting and some skill at putting it all together for what wil turn out to be quite an expensive mess otherwise.

The moss ball plant.. NO you cannot use moss from the garden following those instructions, you will end up with a dribbly ball of falling apart mud and moss. It will absolutely need sphagnum moss and nothing else will work if you follow their scant directions.

SinkGirl · 05/12/2020 17:05

I generally like stuff that’s a bit more interesting too, but most Christmas crafts are pretty cheesy, and I’m up for Christmas cheese!

Purl Bee often has really lovely projects which are a bit more interesting - they have some good Christmas projects too which are somewhere in the middle

In normal times I help with a craft club for children. They might enjoy making a bag from an old t-shirt so I might suggest that for when we can get going again. We like to use recycled stuff too.
I don't like that moss ball though!

mollscroll · 05/12/2020 17:43

Agree OP.

The onion stained wall hanging is basically the Turin Shroud, 2020 style.

Fortunately I don’t know anyone who would make any of these (and indeed fewer and fewer people who read the Guardian).

BefuddledPerson · 05/12/2020 19:34

Fortunately I don’t know anyone who would make any of these rather narrow-minded approach, this - my friends have all different tastes in things like crafts and interiors and I think that's a good thing!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/12/2020 20:48

I made crocheted bunting, I quite liked it.

Why would you KNIT bunting?

Because knitters knit everything :)

TwoZeroTwoZero · 05/12/2020 21:06

That is the shittiest, most depressing wreath I've ever seen. It looks like whoever made it got bored part way through and thought, "Fuck it, that'll do."

The article was terrible! With no pictures or explanations.
But it was worth it, so that you started this thread, and I saw @SinkGirl's post!!

DH and I are festively watching an episode of X Files every evening until the next series of The Expanse starts Grin

True. One of my mum's friends used to knit her childrens swimming costumes Grin

Nothing says I love you like a bag made out of an old t shirtXmas Smile

Happy to oblige 😬

Are you going to make one? I’ve only just started and sadly waylaid by having to sort the house out (boo) but will get back to it in the week :)!

PassataQueenofBritain · 06/12/2020 01:51

My DH and DD both loved it! But it is somewhat beyond my skills. I can knit very nicely, but I cannot crochet. How does it play the music though?

SinkGirl · 06/12/2020 09:35

It has a plinky plonky music box in the flying saucer - you pull the cow down and it slowly rises back up as the theme tune plays. I did have to buy the box from Lalylala because funnily enough you can’t find many X Files music boxes with strings and it wouldn’t be right with a lullaby one!

If you can knit you can easily crochet - get cracking and you can make this in no time :)

pickingdaisies · 06/12/2020 10:29

Just disappeared down a lalylala rabbit hole. So much nicer than soggy moss.
I also remember my mum dying some of my old knee high, no longer white socks with onion skins, following a tip in a magazine. They ended up a very peculiar colour.

That is absolutely genius!
SnuggyBuggy · 06/12/2020 15:44

I love crafting tat gifts but I'm not going to be interested in trying anything without a decent photo of the finished project. Do they have to pay per photo used or something?

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 06/12/2020 15:47

I hate all this kind if shit. Why would you want any of it junking up your home?
