Do you buy gifts for delivery/bin collectors?

Wondering what the general consensus is on buying some chocolate/alcohol for delivery and bin collectors, posties etc... I usually think I should but never have because I always overthink and then don't do it... and this year I'm thinking it's even more deserved due to the situation

No, I never have.
But an ex neighbour used to leave 6 cans of lager on top of her bin on the last collection before Xmas.

BakedTattie · 05/12/2020 07:57

My mum always left a box of beer for them. I leave a box of chocs

AlwaysLatte · 05/12/2020 07:59

We normally give them a Christmas card with a thank you and £20 each.

helloxhristmas · 05/12/2020 08:00

No.

Grooticle · 05/12/2020 08:03

It’s never occurred to me tbh. Every delivery driver round here is different, I wouldn’t recognise any of them. And I’ve never actually seen the binmen, they must flit down the street very quickly and quietly.

Washimal · 05/12/2020 08:03

We leave a big tub of chocolates and a card for the bin men. Our postman gets some cash in a card.

Tomcullenisahero · 05/12/2020 08:05

I would leave a box of Roses or Quality Street or a box of beer on top of the bin the week before Christmas. I keep a tub of chocolates for the postie too by the door but sometimes he's just so darn fast

hopeishere · 05/12/2020 08:09

I might do the bee thing this year.

I do want to catch one delivery guy who's a regular and give him something.

I give the Sainsbury's guy money.

I do a gift bag for the cleaners.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 05/12/2020 08:10

We give to our postie, mostly because our dog really likes the postie and she goes mental when he’s here so it started as a bit of an apology. She’s not at all bothered if the regular postie is off and she doesn’t have this reaction with anyone else. Everyone else, she is the politest dog and will and wait to be introduced nicely. So we’ve become quite friendly with regular postie, especially working from home this year. He recognises our names and will take post from previous owners back to the post office for us. He’d always try to deliver our parcel if we were out. He has a little chat with us (from a distance). So we’ll be buying him a box of chocolates.

The regular DPD man has been to ours a lot this year too but I don’t think we’re at buying him a box of chocolates just yet.

RachelRosie · 05/12/2020 08:13

We have a regular fruit and veg delivery and they have been fantastic all year so they are getting a box of biscuits. We will leave a little tube of chocolates out for the milk man too

165EatonPlace · 05/12/2020 08:16

Tipped the in bin men a few months into Covid because they were still providing a service. Always tip the postman at Christmas.

vanillandhoney · 05/12/2020 08:21

No.

How do you know what you leave on your bin isn't just nicked by a random passer by? Our bin lorries don't come around until about 10am or even midday some days!

lurker101 · 05/12/2020 08:22

My parents always tip ours cash. They have a regular team, whereas I live in a flat and don’t have a regular team so I don’t tip.

Nonamesavail · 05/12/2020 08:23

I leave some celebrations on the bins for them to share on their round.

Also going to get the hermes guy something and some chocs for amazon.

AlwaysLatte · 05/12/2020 08:27

In our case there aren't any passers by but when it's raining we leave a note asking for them to knock. Not much help if you're out that day though - maybe leave it with a neighbour and a note to knock there?

daisypond · 05/12/2020 08:29

No. I would never do that.

Brefugee · 05/12/2020 08:30

we give them a cash tip.

BigBaublesGalore · 05/12/2020 08:32

@daisypond can I ask why you would never do that?

OP posts:
Rosebel · 05/12/2020 08:36

My dad used to (also did to me postman, paper boy and milkm8) but he's retired now so has less spare cash.
They might be allowed to accept a present but possibly not money. Don't know if it's the same but my husband works for the council doing parks and grounds. Locals shopkeeper always give them free drinks in the summer which they are grateful for but when offered money they had to refuse it (pre Covid).
Don't know if its the same as the bins aren't done by the council but I'm sure they'd appreciate the gesture.

SierraHotel · 05/12/2020 08:37

No, I've never done this..to be honest it would never enter my head to leave a present for the bin men.

EasternDailyStress · 05/12/2020 08:38

We always give beer to the binmen, in a carrier bag tied to the handle, so it's not obvious to passers by.

Postie gets scratchcards, milkman bottle of wine, window cleaners tub of chocs, Hermes delivery man bottle of wine, ditto hairdresser.

daisypond · 05/12/2020 08:55
@daisypond can I ask why you would never do that?
A few reasons:
It’s a bit insulting - a bit noblesse oblige.
Bin men earn more than me.
Presents would get stolen.
People don’t get presents for doing their job.
It’s weird.
We don’t really do presents at all in my family for adults.
Are they even allowed to accept presents?
What would you get a crew of mixed adults you don’t know? I see lager has been mentioned a lot.

However, if your bin man had gone out of the way to be helpful - you’re elderly and they put the bins away for you - that would be different.

We don’t have a regular postie, or a milkman, or get supermarket deliveries, or have a window cleaner, or staff, etc.

HappydaysArehere · 05/12/2020 08:59

Post lady gets a card with about £15 although this year it will be £20.
Always used to give money in a card to bin men but this has got difficult as there are more collections as they take different items on different days. Not sure what to do.

Crystal87 · 05/12/2020 09:00

No. I've never seen the binmen because they go down the back entry early in the morning, not down the street.

Ozgirl75 · 05/12/2020 09:04

When I was growing up my mum used to do a card and present for the postman, milkman, bin men etc but they live in a small village and know them as it’s always the same ones.

I’m going to leave a little something for our fruit and veg box delivery guy but the others rotate so it’s a selection of people anyway.
