I went to someones hosue once and they didn't even have a bathroom door... it wasnt because of poverty but because they had young children they were afraid of locking themselves in the bathroom somehow...

Unicant · 15/12/2020 00:48

And oh god yeah those high tech movement censor security systems inside houses... I stayed at a friend's house once as a teen and set all the alarms off just by going in the kitchen at night ti get some water. Never stayed there again what a nightmare.

Clevererthanyou · 15/12/2020 00:52

Lovely in laws won’t meet at Christmas time anywhere except their house ... and they don’t prepare for it. There’s plenty of food and drink and it’s really warm, don’t get me wrong, but the living room is tiny and they don’t bother tidying up any of the piles of clutter before we arrive so we have to stay sitting at the dinner table all.day.long. Don’t ask to be helpful by taking piles of laundry upstairs either ... you’ll get barked at. Love them dearly but what tickles me is that they ask for cash at Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and mother/fathers days as they don’t like tat Grin Grin

@Beebumble2 an intruding germ. Brilliant Grin

My PiL have timers for everything that ping incessantly when a meal is being made - Potatoes 30 minute pinger, peas 18 minute pinger etc etc
Why they don't just look in the bloody pan and stab the tatties with a fork I don't know.

And don't get me started on the military operation that is making scrambled eggs....Hmm

Ginfordinner · 15/12/2020 22:02

I use timers @RaraRachael because I hate overcooked vegetables and burnt cakes.

My pet peeve is when hosts don't get up until like 9 ish and I'm starving and desperate for coffee by then.

Babyyodasmacarons · 15/12/2020 23:22

The no books comments says more about those saying it. People can be educated or like to read without any visable display you can see. Tbh, I only buy very special books now, that are stored in my office. Otherwise I use my kindle. It is better for the environment. Which is more important than looking clever to visitors.

This!

Babyyodasmacarons · 15/12/2020 23:24

So the whole faux snobbishness about having books on display is really not something I can comprehend. A book is to be read. It doesn’t matter where you store it, be it in a cupboard, an open book shelf or an electronic repository. It is not something to be shown off so you can act superior.

and also this!

Just a minute, they cook peas for 18 minutes? Is there any flavour left?

2 minutes in the steamer. That's all peas need. Boiled potatoes only need around 20 minutes or so too.

@dayswithaY

My ILs house smells of dinner, all the time. When you leave your hair, clothes and skin all smell like mince and gravy. You can even smell it as you approach their front door. They refuse to open any window anywhere in the house ever, as they pay too much for heating in winter and don't want flies to come in in the summer. They keep a well used plastic fly swatter on top of the bread bin, unaware of the horrors festering on it.
Haha my MILs house smells exactly the same. Like old cooking. But not nice cooking smells. A bit like if you microwave a cheap shepherd's pie ready meal. Everything from the house smells of it. The kids even have that smell when they've been round her house. It's so peculiar because bar houses where people smoke, I've never known a smell to cling for so long.

Also, her dishwasher has been broken for years and she refuses to let us take a look at it. So if you take out a glass or mug there are often bits of food stuck on them. She sort of falls in the posh but very grubby category.

Thismustbelove · 16/12/2020 01:16

My IL's house also smells of roast meat ALL the time.

I have to shower the kids and put every item of clothing into the laundry after we visit. Otherwise they smell like roast chicken.

MIL never opens a window and cooks a lot in a small kitchen. Her kitchen has a peculiar layout. I don't think it even has a window and her heating is on all the time.

This entire thread is about how people observe and react.

People can be educated or like to read without any visable display you can see

Who said they weren't edited, it's a marker that mean something to those for whom it has meaning

Tbh, I only buy very special books now, that are stored in my office. Otherwise I use my kindle. It is better for the environment

Is it ?

Which is more important than looking clever to visitors

Has anyone actually proposed this, or has any book loving person required it?

How about Grandfather clocks that go..BONG BONG BONG all through the night

Kintsugi16 · 16/12/2020 07:05

I think the idea that displaying, and even reading books is an indicator of being educated is an extremely dated view tbh. I have friends and acquaintances who use this marker to judge others and are always referring to their piles of books everywhere that in some way makes them feel superior.

DdraigGoch · 16/12/2020 09:01

Otherwise I use my kindle. It is better for the environment.
Only if you were the sort of weirdo who buys brand new books, reads them once and then chucks them in the landfill. If on the other hand you reread them or donate them for resale then their impact is bugger all. Unlike the impact of that bundle of precious minerals.

dementedma · 16/12/2020 09:17

Bathrooms rammed with plastic bottles of shampoo and shower gel. Don't get me started on people who just don't give a fuck.

hellswelshy · 16/12/2020 10:35

Not sure having books on shelves means the house owner is trying to look educated! I have books in my bookcase because I love them, that's all. I look at screens all day, so love to read and re- read certain books. Plus do lots of swaps with family and friends!

ChristmasUserName2020 · 16/12/2020 10:57

I kinda feel bad saying mine, but I will anyway. My FIL is a bit of a hoarder and his flat resembles an Amazon warehouse, there’s literally stuff everywhere piled up. You can’t sit down and have to stand up in the kitchen to eat. He had a push bike but couldn’t be bothered to use it so the hedge kind of grew around it so now it’s lost in there. He never puts the heating on so you can see your breath and have to wear your outside coat and hat when you go there. I avoid it as much as possible.

Lelophants · 16/12/2020 11:00

Cat bowl in the kitchen i know km probably being unreasonable if there is lack of space but the smell makes me heave (and I am a cat person).

Also animal bowls in dishwasher. Xmas Envy (not envy).

draughtycatflap · 16/12/2020 11:06

My cat’s food is eaten in the throne room. No way would he lower himself to eat food with the servants.

Nowaynl · 16/12/2020 11:12

Do they change everything when they decorate?

My Mum does this. She redecorates her living room probably every 3-4 years and will buy a new sofa, lamps, cushions, curtains, photo frames, mirror etc to match. It’s absolutely bonkers and so wasteful but she’s always done this.

As for the no shoes thing. We have wood flooring in every room aside from the kitchen and bathrooms which are tiled. We also have doormats to wipe feet before entering but we still would prefer guests to remove their shoes. It’s just a hygiene thing for me, I have a 2 year old who spends a lot of time playing on the floor so I don’t want it to be dirty. I do mop every day but it’s not really the point. I just think it’s respectful to remove your shoes in someone else’s home, it’s how I was brought up I guess. DH’s Grandad has parquet flooring throughout and he doesn’t mind whether people keep their shoes on or not, he seems to permanently have his boots on but I just can’t do it. We live in Yorkshire where it tends to rain a lot too so I don’t think it’s respectful to wear wet shoes inside...

Nowaynl · 16/12/2020 11:15

We know someone whose house just seems to smell like instant noodles all of the time. I can’t really describe the smell other than instant noodles and also mustiness. I also have to wash everyone’s clothing when they return because the smell honestly makes my stomach turn. Stopped wearing a coat when we go there because I don’t like washing coats too often to protect the waterproof layer.
