A woman laid chicken bones and ketchup out with an Elf on the Shelf hat so that it looked like a Grinch toy had eaten him. Her five year old was distraught and is now frightened of the Grinch. She thought it was funny.

one of my DCs is obsessed with a youtube star. her parents prank her for likes all the time and have made a fortune out of it. I think they are despicable. One prank they did is told her they were getting divorced and filmed her absolutely devastated reaction and her tears. They apparently thought that was funne. The kid is about 11 I think.
They also filmed her christmas gifts last year- literally thousands of pounds worth of stuff - iphones and the like. I just thought how disgusting, because there will be loads of kids whose parents are divorcing and whose parents could not afford to get them alot for christmas. It seemed - hideous.

This - everything that is wrong with society today. Just horrid and sadly probably millions of 'likes' with people actually 'following' 'watching' etc these people... odd - very odd

Didthatreallyhappen · 04/12/2020 11:49

What gamer chick said.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 04/12/2020 11:52

She isn't mentally ill........she's just desperate to go viral like all the other gormless idiots who have ' made it '. Hmm

umpteennamechanges · 04/12/2020 11:52

@CardoMondo

I have a sick sense of humour and found the picture funny but even I wouldn’t have done that to a 5 year old. She seems a bit unhinged.

This.

Funny. Would definitely do for an older child who would find amusing but not a 5 year old!

umpteennamechanges · 04/12/2020 11:54

@Bakedcrinkly

Similar poor parenting to a woman I have as a ‘friend’ on SM who thought it was hilarious to inject English Mustard into a pack of jam doughnuts for her boys who are 7 and 9.

She thought it was sooooo funny as did a lot of her friends. Personally I thought it a mean and cruel thing do. I was disgusted and saddened that people could be like this to their children.

This thread is providing many inspirations for things to do to my husband but agree not for kids okay, maybe sulky teens.

Rosebel · 04/12/2020 12:01

I don't think she's unhinged or anything like that and the suggestion she needs locking up is ridiculous.
She made a really bad judgement and should have known her 5 year old would be upset but that doesn't make her an awful par8.
Luckily I don't have to deal with this crap because we don't have an elf. They're too creepy.

Duanphen · 04/12/2020 12:06

For years certain parents have delighted in a month of torturing their kids like this. They've cut their hair off in their sleep, drawn on their faces with markers, smashed holes in the walls and convinced their children that, in the morning, some other destruction awaits.

Frankly it's revolting. It's like some people enjoy being a bully for the one month where you can publicly post evidence of it.

A pair of dickheads in the US lost custody of their children for a series of abusive acts including trashing rooms and then blaming the children for it, laughing at their confusion and distress.

Any parent who actually loves their child wouldn't dream of doing these things. Parents who do... well. They need looking at.

unmarkedbythat · 04/12/2020 12:09

That's hideous. I bet when at school she was a bully who hid behind "but it's a jooooooooke" if ever challenged on her behaviour. Some people really are just shits. Laughing when you've made your child cry with fear and distress? Indefensible.

RightOnTheEdge · 04/12/2020 12:09

Seems like she's just talking rubbish for attention.

First she said he cried and cried for half an hour and is still traumatised but then when she got some backlash she said he can handle it, he cried for a little bit then he was fine.
So which one was it?

^^
This would really traumatise a child I imagine! Never being able to relax and trust what your parents did or said.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2020 12:12

O saw the pics, was amused as it's what the elf deserves frankly (I assume they work for Krampus not Santa) but it's just shitty parenting to do this to your kid, laugh when they're upset and then publicize that dear and upset for the world for likes

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2020 12:15

The problem is the note people watch,, the more thumbs up and subscribes, the more they'll do it and the now extreme it'll get

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/12/2020 12:15

I’ve seen a similar photo and found it hilarious, but then I’m not 5. IMO it was a cruel thing to do, but I find the whole EOTS thing creepy and OTT and IMO the sooner they all get eaten, with ketchup or garlic butter or HP sauce, the better.

NoPainNoTartine · 04/12/2020 12:18

who the fuck would do that? Shock
I know child abuse is a thing, but every new example is more depressing than the last one

NoPainNoTartine · 04/12/2020 12:21

That woman IS unhinged. It doesn't matter if she thinks it's hilarious or is trying to get her 2 seconds of fame in trash press, doing that to your 5 year old is just not on.

The idea is not bad but it's for teens and adults, not a little kid, especially one who believes!

The elf is supposed to be a harmless bit of fun to amuse the kids, why do some idiots need to take it a step too far and ruin it for their own children.

RubyRedBerry · 04/12/2020 12:29

she stole this idea off pinterest.....

IrisAtwood · 04/12/2020 12:35

@MoonElk

Kid will likely laugh about it when he's older surely, I remember being scared by my uncle and granddad as a kid (catching spiders to take out of my bedroom as I'm an arachnophobe, then chasing me and pretending to launch it at me etc etc), and yeah I would get upset, but as an adult they are fond memories that we all laugh about together.
Horrible.

My family behave like that and think that if you’re upset then you can’t take a joke.

It’s gaslighting and passive aggressive. They do it because they enjoy your fear and distress and claim it was funny when confronted.

The wrong people are infertile.

NoPainNoTartine · 04/12/2020 12:44

You cannot seriously compare the vision of the leftover cadaver of your elf and pretending to throw a spider at you Hmm

not at 5

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 04/12/2020 12:56

It’s hilarious - in the context of sharing amongst adults.

In the context of a prank for a 5 year old - incredibly misguided, lacking in empathy, and unable to reflect and change course in the face of a different straight child. We all make mistakes - doubling down on this one is an even bigger mistake.

GabsAlot · 04/12/2020 15:06

bit much for a 5 year old maybe ten or older

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/12/2020 18:11

@lioncitygirl

I mean - the whole concept of a damn elf moving from place to place scares the shit out of me - but even I am disturbed this woman did that to her child - seems pretty mean to do to one so young. I would never to that to my two for sure! Yikes. And then to go onto a national newspaper to brag about it so people can see how mean it was?! Insane.
I agree - and often Santa himself frightens children - the thought that a man can get into your home while your parents sleep is a pretty scary one when you think about it . . .
ekidmxcl · 04/12/2020 18:36

That is really scary for a little kid.

Quite funny if the audience was adult.

Mind you the elf on the shelf is such utter bollocks

itsgettingweird · 04/12/2020 18:49

The problem is the elf on the shelf has stopped being something fun for families to do for their children in the run up to Christmas - and has become a competitive SM event which leads to irresponsible led scenes and parents posting things about their children that aren't even funny - Eg they are terrified.

I don't disagree with EotS. Never did it myself though.

WinterWhore · 04/12/2020 18:49

@gamerchick

Personally I think the whole elf on the shelf thing is disturbed.
How dramatic Hmm it's a bit of fun albeit I would never do it because I cant be arsed.
