Working from home - or not!

Is anyone spending their WFH days mainly dossing and actually not feeling guilty about it (thinking about all the times stayed late in office and didn't take lunch break because of crazy workload)? AIBU to think this is acceptable?

OP posts:

I am shocked at the workshy attitude of some of the posters on here Hmm

And, as for the poster, who doesn't have enough to do, it sounds like the sector she is working for is inefficient and badly managed.

we're all working from home and no one will be made redundant as we're public sector,

You are very much mistaken. If you don't have enough to do have you asked your manager for more work?

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 04/12/2020 14:37

i am working now :) ha ha ha

NeonIcedcoffee · 04/12/2020 14:43

I wish I had time to skive! I think it depends how you feel your employers treat you. If they treat you like shit and don't appreciate you you're more likely to do stuff like laze around.

SillyUnMurphy · 04/12/2020 14:50

I’m public sector. We’ve had a hellish few months WFH - busier than ever and I’ve found myself working on my days off and weekends (I’m part-time) just to adhere to deadlines. Things have finally quietened down, now that it’s near Christmas, so I’ve finally taken my foot off the pedal a bit but I’m still logged on and working from 8-4.30 every day.

Chimeraforce · 04/12/2020 14:50

No. I wish! I'm the only one who can do my job and I'm drowning. So if I kicked back it would be noticed.. .. Finance Work/assessments etc.
I'd love to doss. I'd like the ability to rarely work from a pub. But... Highly confidential and vulnerable plus finance docs.. Not very data protection friendly sadly.

KittenCalledBob · 04/12/2020 18:07

I'm public sector and this has been a very busy time for us! However I have enjoyed the increased flexibility of organising my working hours (I'm part time).

BritWifeinUSA · 04/12/2020 20:19

The OP never said that she was dossing and slacking so I don’t know why some people have responded as if she did. I’m thinking this is perhaps another “WFH bashing” thread. Maybe the OP has been called back to the office or works in retail or healthcare and can’t WFH and is aggrieved by the perceived laziness by those who do WFH. If so, she didn’t always get the answers she was hoping for although some have reinforced the stereotype that WFH means watching TV and napping.

I have been permanently home-based for years. Sure, I put the odd load of washing on or answer then door but in an office people stop and chatter for a few minutes here and there. I’m not a slave so I take natural breaks when I need to step away from the screens a few times a day.

When I first started WFH I was tempted to log on after hours and “just do” this. Then the novelty wore off. Now I close (and sometimes lock) my office door when I’ve finished for the day and forget about it. Any employer who expects me to do work outside of hours isn’t worth working for and I’d take my 21 years experience elsewhere.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 04/12/2020 20:22

No. I'm working hard (just with Netflix on in the background)

CloudyVanilla · 04/12/2020 20:28

I do have much more relaxed days at the moment and feel guilt free because I'm always available as soon as any work comes up, but mainly because due to the nature of my work, while all face to face events are cancelled I have basically nothig to do.

Separately, I'm very grateful that my standard officr procrastination time can be used to do things that are actually beneficial to my home life instead of just pure procrastination

I'm a hard worker and have a good reputation. But if there's not much to do I'm not going to complain!

CloudyVanilla · 04/12/2020 20:29

@BritWifeinUSA the OP specifically states she is spending most of her WFH time dossing 😅😅😅

Tigerstripe20 · 04/12/2020 20:50

No, busy as anything and loving it , do see a lot of lazy behaviour from some ,chatting on our work social media , posting cr*p etc but I just ignore it (I get notifications from the site)

I love my job and my boss is bloody great, it's taken a long time to find one so good and I respect him and the fact he knows he can trust me to produce good work.

Lazy dossers usually get found out eventually especially as some employers take a sneaky peak on Social media to check on their employees.

Ginfordinner · 04/12/2020 20:55

I know my boss uses FB, so I only ever go on Messenger/FB during my contracted hours if DD (who is away at university) messages me.

Osirus · 04/12/2020 21:07

No, I try hard to find stuff to do, as I’m grateful to be allowed to work from home, when you can’t do all aspects of my job from home.

I’m getting more done at home too - there’s no office chatting!

Funkypolar · 04/12/2020 21:16

I WFH and I don’t really have much to do. Counting down the days until maternity leave.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 04/12/2020 21:17

I work as hard as is required. Some days are easier than others abs I get to finish early. Today was 8am until 6pm with a 15 minute lunch break but I'm very paid well so I have no complaints. I really love being able/allowed to wfh. I'd like to keep it that way.

Daisychainsandglitter · 04/12/2020 21:21

No way I am working far harder Ryan I would in the office. The boundaries between work and home are v blurred at the moment.

Daisychainsandglitter · 04/12/2020 21:22

Than I not Ryan!

Rose789 · 04/12/2020 21:23

I’m working more then ever from home. I’m working at least an hour more each day, working through lunch. In the office we are expected to leave our desks for breaks and lunch.

nancybotwinbloom · 04/12/2020 21:41

Swings and roundabouts really.

Do you get done what you need to get done?

I have lulls and busy periods.

I was dossing a bit at the start of Covid. Mostly as others were Getting used to WFH so I was waiting on other people for things.

I'm working more hours now that people are getting used to WFH.

I've worked from home for over ten years so for me I tend to make up in the night what I doss in the day. And by doss I mean school runs. Running to Asda etc.

It works out the same hours. Just sometimes a bit staggered.

I don't take the piss though. I will work longer through the week to justify an early knock off on a Friday.

itsovernowthen · 05/12/2020 09:42

Not me, I've been hugely busy for the last 9 months. I couldn't doss about, as I have work to deliver on the form of reports and documents, and questions would be asked if they weren't appearing on time.

I'd feel very nervous about your job security if I were you OP. If you are doing nothing all day every day, SOMEONE at your employer knows this, and you might not have that 'job' for very much longer...

lockdownalli · 05/12/2020 09:48

Nope. I am getting more done because I used to spend so much time dossing travelling by train.

I absolutely love it though. We have been told we will be WFH until Easter at least, and probably beyond, as employer is not renewing leases on office buildings.

KarmaStar · 05/12/2020 10:59

Can you ask for more work?I could not have your work ethic.

Ginfordinner · 05/12/2020 11:12

I absolutely love it though. We have been told we will be WFH until Easter at least, and probably beyond, as employer is not renewing leases on office buildings.

Our building lease ran out in August and wasn't renewed. They are now renting much smaller premises for some of the office functions that simply can't be done at home. All of my team's contracts have been altered to WFH.

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 05/12/2020 11:18

During lockdown it was quieter but I was home schooling so it didn’t feel like so much of a break. Busier than ever now (slightly surprising given the sector I work in but that’s probably hopeful in terms of economic recovery). Finding it increasingly difficult to switch off so having to make a conscious effort to switch the laptop off and close the study door when I finish for the day.

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 05/12/2020 11:20

And like others it sounds likely that we won’t be back in the office as before, think we might be going to one ‘office day’ a week so that folk actually get to see each other.
