I'm assuming that it will mean that essentially rich people won't have to quarantine when arriving back in the UK whereas the plebs will still be expected to.

It’s a disgrace. One rule for them once more. Sadly, this sort of thing is no longer shocking. Corrupt, self-serving Tory scum.

justgeton · 03/12/2020 23:20

What's a high value customer? If it's those who are travelling for business, or for the good of all then fine. Not exactly having a jolly in the sun

OwlinaTree · 03/12/2020 23:20

It's always been the case. Different rules for the rich and powerful.

PirateCatQueen · 03/12/2020 23:20

Absolute shit show.

JanewaysBun · 03/12/2020 23:21

Agreed, kanye west came "for London fashion week" a whole ago and didn't isolate either way!

TheDowagerDuchess · 03/12/2020 23:21

That’s really shocking!

For the good of all of us? Not bloody likely. And how does one define exactly what constitutes high value? Just another way for the 1% to be able to swan through their lives with very few inconveniences even from COVID, while everyone else’s lives shrink.
Eng123 · 03/12/2020 23:30

It could be justified, for example if it were supporting a large contract that would employ a substantial amount of people. But yes it will be abused.

Or, just think, they could do a zoom call like the rest of us. Better for the environment too.
BonnieDundee · 03/12/2020 23:45

YANBU OP. I thought the same. That's not a decision made on health grounds

ComDummings · 03/12/2020 23:46

It’s shocking

TheRubyRedshoes · 03/12/2020 23:46

I'm sure hvp sir Philip Green will be appreciate this when he comes over to sort out his loyal workers pensions.

NoSquirrels · 03/12/2020 23:51

Fuck-ing-hell.

Didn’t think I could be more shocked by this government.

Either it’s rich people can PAY to do what they like (‘high-value’, eh - may as well get some cash out of them for the privilege) or it’s same rules for everyone on the basis a fucking VIRUS doesn’t check a bank account.

Christ on a bike.

sst1234 · 03/12/2020 23:55

To be honest it makes sense that no business traveller should have to quarantine. No business, no economy.

Crunchymum · 03/12/2020 23:59

Utter cunts are making it up as they go along.

saraclara · 04/12/2020 00:03

My friend has to occasionally fly out somewhere to save a contract that's going down the pan. But he wouldn't count as high value under these rules. Only the biggest of his big bosses would. And the Big boss wouldn't have a clue how to save the contract that my friend will have been working on forensically for months.

NoSquirrels · 04/12/2020 00:10

Business can be conducted over video conferencing.

It can.

You can’t wine, dine, schmooze etc. And blah blah business deals aren’t all done in the room etc. But FFS, it’s a global pandemic. Business can happen via technology. If there’s the will to do so.

PatriciaHolm · 04/12/2020 00:17

According to the Dept of Transport -

"“individuals undertaking specific business activity which would deliver a significant benefit to the UK economy – including activity that creates or preserves 50+ UK jobs – will no longer need to self-isolate when travelling or returning from non-exempt countries. Individuals will only be exempt when undertaking the specific business activity and will only be able to meet with others as required by that specific activity.”

“Exemptions will also come into force at the same time for domestic and international performing arts professionals, TV production staff, journalists and recently signed elite sportspersons, ensuring that industries which require specific, high-talent individuals who rely on international connections can continue to complete their work.”

Not really its for higher lev3el executives to keep businesses going.

They aren't exactly going to be milling around the local pubs and shops are they

Well yeah? Did you think there was a pre written "how to handle a global pandemic" handbook out there?

May I point you to Operation Cygnus and Pandemic Preparedness Strategy. The UK had the chance to be prepared long before Covid appeared, they shouldn't need to be making it up as they go along. They should have been prepared!

SheepandCow · 04/12/2020 00:45

The government aren't even pretending anymore are they. It's open contempt for the public.

A virus doesn't care how much money somebody has. It will still infect them - and they can still infect others.

Then again, how many places will want to let us in? We have one of the highest death rates in the whole world. China - nowadays a growing business hub - certainly won't want Brits coming in. They're letting in the French (with negative tests) but that's because France did more than us to lower their infection rate.

SheepandCow · 04/12/2020 00:46

to keep their businesses going
Is it though really? Something that can't be done remotely. Or is it an excuse for a ski trip?

Taiwan had a pandemic strategy which meant they hit the ground running. They had very few deaths.
Mind you they are very cautious of their neighbour China.

MercyBooth · 04/12/2020 01:25

Absolute cunts. No wonder anger is growing.
