To not give the money back?

I recently replaced my (fully working and perfectly fine) washing machine with a washer dryer. A few days later my cousin asked on Facebook if anyone is selling a washing machine. Perfect timing, sent her a message and she came and collected it yesterday.
Today she has messaged me to say the washing machine is broken and won't spin or drain. I know it worked before it left the house.

I have offered to give her the money back if she brings it back - she's saying she can't bring it back as the car is now broken too
Offered to collect it and refund - she says no because someone is coming to look at it tomorrow (but she tells me she doesn't have the money to be fixing it)

AIBU to think she was pulling a fast one and hoping for her money back and to keep the machine? Any resolution I've given her that doesn't include me giving her money without getting the washing machine back has been turned down even though she says she can't afford to fix it!

She's pulling a fast one. Make it very clear you won't pay for any repairs to the machine, but you are more than happy to collect and refund

Can often be found asking to borrow money for essential items for the kids (including borrowing from two different people to pay for the washing machine) but at the same time paying for takeaways for herself DP and 3 kids So I'd say yes Grin

We always planned to sell it to someone and this helped us to afford the washer dryer so yes, I charged her

I would imagine most people would sell a working item such as a washer to go towards the cost of a new one.

I agree with you. would tell her that you will give her back her money when you have possession of the machine.

I also would have charged her for the machine btw

So what if she did? She might have been charged her the same as anyone,or maybe a token amount.

Either way the cousin wasn't held at gun point and forced to buy it...

If she shoved it on it’s side in the back of a car then that’ll be the reason it no longer works. Washing machines are best transported upright.

...and she'll mention how much is cost her to get it fixed and maybe you should refund her the cost of the engineer, which just so happens to be the same/more than she paid you. Etc

Ask her what the person said about the washing machine tomorrow.

I'll bet it's magically fixed....

I expect it will be fixed and there will be grumbles about the cost of fixing it in a last ditch (and pointless) attempt to get some money from me

Just go round with a load and see if it works.
But surely things like this are sold 'as seen.' And if she damaged it in transit, that's her problem.

This is why I avoid selling electrical domestic items unless they're under shop warranty.
It isn't worth the hassle I put them on free cycle and be done.

Its difficult because if it was the other way around I wouldn't be happy with something I'd paid for being broken. BUT I feel like if it really is broken and you are really strapped for cash and somebody offers you a full refund and to rid you of said faulty washing machine - you'd jump at the chance right?

I don't think it's broken at all, which is why she's hell bent on not letting you have it back.

Go and collect it from her, refund her and the re-sell it again (after you've double checked it of course)
