We started DS with potty training over a year ago. Initially went well, seemed ready at just turned 2yo. He'd have the occasional accident. During lockdown, he regressed badly, multiple accidents daily. We had other things going on too, so I'm not surprised by the regression. But 6 months on, he's still having multiple daily accidents and I'm at a loss. I've tried most things, have previously taken him to the GP to rule out infection. Nursery have now suggested putting him back into nappies, to ease the pressure on him. When wearing a nappy, he makes no attempt to use the toilet. I can see what they're saying but most things I've read say not to go back to nappies? Hes 3.5yo now.

If he was going to the toilet without accidents before, then he is capable of it. A consequence of not going to the toilet whe you know how will be having to wear a nappy even if he doesn't like it. If he really doesn't like it then he will stop.

I’ve said it in other threads but I’ll say it again here in case it helps.

I was a late toilet trainer and was in nappies at night FAR later than I would care to admit.

Both DD’s were the same. Late giving up nappies, loads of accidents and in Drynites quite late too.

We all had something in common (both when I was a kid and then DD’s). We all loved....

BLACKCURRENT JUICE.

Favourite tipple for toddlers and older kids.

I then discovered that it irritates some children’s bladders and causes accidents.

We banned blackcurrent juice as an experiment and both DDs stopped bed wetting virtually overnight.

If your DS drinks blackcurrent squash regularly, try without and see if it solves the problem.

I dread to think how much money my parents and later DH and I would have saved on buying nappies, Pullups and Drynites if blackcurrent juice didn’t exist.

Slap some pull ups on him at nursery. Because of course they dont want to deal with several accidents a day....
And your kid is old enough to know it is not being punished when you put pull ups on him because you can simply explain it to him. And if he doesn't like to wear them then it makes it even better as you just tell him to try and use the bathroom again. Have you asked him why it is happening?? Because he used to be able to do so and how not anymore...

Oh and use training pants at home. Becausr nappies and pull ups keep the kid dry but a training pants will make him experience the wet feeling. That should help him more. And try to find a reward for using the bathroom. Something small you can do together or favorite music or a sticker. Whatever. Anything.

But mostly just ask him what is going on.

I'd not be that keen to go back to nappies without ruling out other reasons. Constipation for example is linked.

My daughter regressed at 4 with wetting then soiling and it was the start of encopresis. Took 2 years to get it under control.

He was doing well but things have changed for him emotionally and he's no longer ready. Nursery have toilet trained hundreds of dc and I'd be inclined to listen to them on this.

I'd be inclined to get the Dr to feel his tummy just to check he's not constipated.

If not just go back to pull ups and let him forget about it for a month or two. Try again in the new year.
