To wonder if neighbours are running a con...

Bunnymumy · 03/12/2020 15:14

...using my address.

So over the past 10 days or so 5 deliveries from at least two different companies have came to my address. They are actually for upstairs neighbours. The flats have numbers like 1/1. Very occasionally companies struggle with that so just number the flats 1-16 (eg: phone companies). So say i'm 1/1 (or flat 5) and the neighbours are putting 11 on their delivery. But the thing is all the numbers on the doors are the ones with the strokes so of course the drivers take it as 1/1.

The delivery ppl have kept buzzing till I answer.
I've sent them upstairs each time and they seem to find the right flat. I heard the lady who answered say once that she couldn't get the right address on the system (all she really needs to do is put say 24 (instead of 2/4) down as it would still find her as there aren't 24 flats inthe building.

But that's 5 times now and I'm getting a bit pissed off and starting to wonder if theres something else going on. I don't know if delivery drivers put a note on their files to say 'wrong initial address' but its making me paranoid that all this expensive stuff is coming out to my flat (one was a Henry hoover) according to their files.

They use the same name on each delivery but it isn't on their door. I'd go up with these deliveries to speak to them but I'm never properly dressed when they arrive. Not 100% sure what flat it is either, sounds like the one directly above me possibly but the thing is...that would mean they arent even flat 11.

Sorry if that was confusing af.
I just went up to knock but no answer, pretty sure they are in though. Do you think I should just flat refuse the parcels in future? Kinda dont want to put their nose outa joint if it is the ones directly above as they have form for noise.

Dunno if I'm being super paranoid about nothing...?

I would stop answering

Notapheasantplucker · 03/12/2020 15:22

Either don't answer, or do answer and just say sorry wrong address and don't point them in the right direction.

Carpetflowers · 03/12/2020 15:24

I would refuse the parcels - sounds really annoying.

Elouera · 03/12/2020 15:30

Yes, I'm very confused about your flat numbering system and your post!!! Confused

I'd either refuse to answer the door, or answer, but refuse to accept the package!

Do you still have these 5 deliveries? If not, who did you give them to? Surely just ask them to change their address number to XX on the system, or add info to their door.

Bunnymumy · 03/12/2020 15:34

No I dont take in the deliveries. I point them upstairs and they seem to find the right flat.

So there are 16 flats. 4 flats per floor
Ground floor 0/1, 0/2, 0/3, 0/4. First floor 1/1, 1/2....ect so on and so forth till you get to the top.

But obviously you could also number the flats 1 through 16.

Bunnymumy · 03/12/2020 15:38

(Though not sure who has what number as I'm not sure it goes in the same order as the / based system). Not even 100 percent of my own as i only ever use 1/1.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/12/2020 15:42

Turn them away. Every time. Don't be helpful.

It may be as they say but it's an imposition, at the very least.

Elouera · 03/12/2020 15:48

@Bunnymumy- I understand the numbering now. Just dont answer!

beedoorknocker · 03/12/2020 15:54

Your building numbering system sounds confusing but like pp have said I would stop answering the door. Or if you do answer the door take the package and your upstairs neighbour will be forced to speak with you in order to get their package. Tell her if she continues to use your address for her deliveries you'll report her? Do you have a landlord or someone you can report to? Or you could put a note on your door saying 'X Person does not live here do not attempt delivery' type of thing and hope the delivery drivers read it before knocking.
The package purchaser must be putting a different delivery address from their billing address.

Bluntness100 · 03/12/2020 15:59

I think it’s pretty standard flat numbering, but I’d also assume it’s exactly what she said, she’s unsure how to do it, I can see why she’s not keen to write 24. I think thinking it’s some sort of scam is a it far fetched

If it bothers you put a note through the door explaining how to do it.

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 03/12/2020 16:04

Perhaps the delivery driver just presses all of the buzzers until somebody answers

StrippedFridge · 03/12/2020 16:07

Stop being helpful. When the packages start being returned or the couriers start phoning her she will start inputting her address properly. I doubt it is a scam. Most likely ineptitude.

Bunnymumy · 03/12/2020 16:12

I've just put a note through the door along the lines of:

'Dear (name on deliveries), please use your 2/2 address for your n deliveries in future, thanks (or even 22 as they'll work it out)'.

Be like the thing it's the wrong flat. The thing is they've been there for years so it's not as if they don't know their own address.

Nah they buzz me specifically. In future I think I will not answer/refuse the deliveries. Though I suspect that they will just phone the customer right then and itll be taken to them anyway without any note of the wrong address.

OP posts:
Bunnymumy · 03/12/2020 16:14

Yeah maybe they just did it all on the same day for different delivery dates. Thing is its different companies delivering so bit odd to have got it wrong every time. Maybe she just had an off day though.

You know it's Christmas right? Lots of people do their shopping online. Your flats sound like they are numbered confusingly. Not sure what kind of con the neighbours could be running.......

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 03/12/2020 16:44

Just say wrong address and bye.

oldshoeuk · 03/12/2020 16:53

The number on our old flat door was 11, the postal address was 211 (second floor) while the building/house number was 25, a door that was itself a nightmare to find. Nothing dodgy, but yes years of confusion.

AcornAutumn · 03/12/2020 16:56

Is this in the UK? I’m baffled by the flat numbering as well. Thinking it could be a mistake.

Things like purchases using a stolen card potentially. More than likely just harmless xmas shopping but you just never know. It being so many deliveries of what seem to be pricey stuff with my address on it...makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Emeraldshamrock · 03/12/2020 17:00

Doesn't sound like a scam.

Bunnymumy · 03/12/2020 17:01

UK yes. Pretty common round these parts too.
Your first part tells the floor and the second part is the flat number on that floor.
So 0/1 is the first flat on ground floor.
And 1/4 is the fourth flat on the first floor.

Branleuse · 03/12/2020 17:02

if its not for you, then dont buzz them in. Theyll soon stop asking you to let them in if you stop doing it

teateateateateamoretea · 03/12/2020 17:03

You're not sure what flat it is, it could easily be 11, but you're convinced they're running some kind of con because they are putting no 11 on their addresses?
OK

Not sure about elsewhere, but here in Scotland that type of numbering is common. Though I used to live in a flat 1/1 and occasionally got letters addressed to me at "1st Jan" - my bank at the time told me their system couldn't deal with "/" and had to use "-" instead, so "1-1", which then found its way in to date format somewhere along the line...Grin

Not really sure what part of wondering if something is potentially dodgy is the same thing as 'concinved' :/ but whatever you say lol.

Anyway, hoping its sorted now anyway. Thanks for listening to me venting guys!
