Since my daughter was too old to be in a travel cot I have had a battle with my mother about what my daughter sleeps in when we go to stay with them. She tried to get me to buy a cot but I stood my ground and we came to a 'compromise' that I would get one off ebay and she would pay me back. This she did. However, now my daughter is in a bed and the cot is too small. My mum who is planning on moving house in a few years time has now said that she doesn't want to buy a bed until she moves as it is only a box room and not many beds fit. My brother who has one of these childrens ready beds for his son uses this when they go to stay but in my opinion they are crap and not where I want my daughter to sleep - what's wrong with a proper bed for gods sake! Anyway I don't want to buy a ready bed when i won't ever use it so what should I do??

Well, either you provide your own solution or just use what your mum provides. You can't really expect her to buy furniture that doesn't fit/suit her house. Kids aren't that bothered and while ready beds aren't a permanent option they are good for this sort of stuff. How often do you visit i.e. how big a problem is this?

It is for your dd 's benefit so if you wnat her to stay over you could contribute if you ar eunhappy with what is offered. Ready beds are fine for occasional use and plain ones are only about £15 but dd (6) just sleeps on the cot mattress on the floor when we stay with my mum. ds sleeps on a fold up Z bed which are inexpensive in Ikea. Your choice.

I have to admit that my boys just slept on camping mats on the floor whenever we stayed over anywhere. They have slept on inflatable mattresses, floors, folded duvets - I must be a bad mother...........

What about a childs sofa/flip out bed.

My almost 5 year old daughter has put the bratz sofa/flip down bed on her Christmas list. It is only £30 from argos and i think it is foam not inflatable.

Then when your mum moves, you could take it back and put it in your dd's bedroom. Somewhere for her friends to sleep when she has sleepovers!

It depends on how often your DD stays at your mum's house. If she is there every week then I see that it would be better for her to have a proper bed. It is not unreasonable of your mum not to want to buy a bed that is unsuitable for her house.

Can you buy a roll-up futon? I have one of those for child visitors (friends of my stepsons' who sleep on the floor in their bedroom) and I have slept on it, with a duvet, and it is very comfortable. It wasn't expensive and it can be rolled up and stored in a cupboard.

ChasingSquirrels · 20/10/2007 21:01

oh god, keep her at home in her own bed or stop being ungrateful at your mother having her for the night and provide a ready/bed or let her sleep on the cot mattress on the floor.

OrmIrian · 20/10/2007 21:02

DD sleeps on the floor in her sleeping bag and a pillow when she decides she wants to camp in her brothers' room at the weekend. Sleeps fine. So yes you are.

ravenAK · 20/10/2007 21:04

Or try freecycle.

Is your dd too big for a toddler bed? They're about £10 on eBay (although you'd have to wait till a local one came up, or postage costs make it impracticable).

When your mum moves/dd grows out of it, stick it straight back on eBay for a fiver!

lomondgore · 20/10/2007 22:18

Yes you are a bit IMO, when my dd sleeps at her grans she sleeps on a mattress on the floor or takes her ready bed. I would just be gratefull that she is having her to stay!

She loves it as it is a novelty for her.
