To complain on Etsy?

naemates · 03/12/2020 11:31

I purchased an item on Etsy on 22nd Nov to go in Dec 1st boxes. The estimated delivery date was 25-27th Nov, the seller dispatched on the 27th which moved the estimated delivery day to 1st Dec and still hasn't arrived.

If it was a real shop, I'd be asking for the refund, as it's too late to be used as intended, although it is food so could still be used. I do feel bad though, given it's just someone trying to make a bit of cash baking at home (also unsure about the hygiene regs for this?)

The woman selling has 59 sales and just one review (I maybe should have thought about that before ordering tbf). How guns blazing would you go?

And Etsy somehow extrapolating from that that delivery could be expected within 3-5 days!

To complain on Etsy?
naemates · 03/12/2020 12:49

I'm assuming it will show up at some point, so I wouldn't complain TO Etsy, I meant more along the lines of should I mention it in the review/express my disappointment to the seller, as it felt mean (my blazing guns don't blaze very brightly).

I didn't realise that Etsy put the estimated dates in for you - that's not great for sellers if they are unrealistic. I do think though that if a seller is running behind on orders or their dispatch times are miles out, it should mention it on the page so buyers can make informed choices. Reminds me of the Penny Blossom episode of Big Bang Theory!

I hadn't heard of Folksy, it looks interesting - thank you!

How guns blazing would you go?

I wouldn’t go “all guns blazing” at anyone or any company.. especially now when I know how delayed the post is ... if it was Amazon and I was promised next day delivery and it was delayed by several days I’d just click to cancel my order.

zigaziga · 03/12/2020 12:52

But if it was an independent seller and just a little bit delayed I honestly wouldn’t do anything.

Soubriquet · 03/12/2020 13:01

I buy quite a bit on Etsy and I haven’t been disappointed yet

I always make sure I order well in advance especially with the postal service like it is right now

naemates · 03/12/2020 13:01

Cross posted with you ferretface, that is rubbish of Etsy! Surely it's an issue for everyone selling on there?

My interpretation of a Dec 1st box is yes, basically the same as an Xmas Eve box. I put together the star for the top of the tree, and things like jammies, advent calendars and our Xmas mugs - things that would be bought/used in December anyway. Bulked out with some popcorn and fancy hot chocolate, it just makes a bit of occasion of the start of the season. To be honest, I don't even have a box, it's laid out on the sofa - it's more of a concept than a box

If next day delivery is unavailable you need to order things in advance I’m afraid. A week before you needed it isn’t enough time, the postal service is understandably overstretched and lagging.

I would definitely message the seller to mention the fact if hasn’t arrived yet but I wouldn’t kick up a major fuss unless it cost a lot and you need the refund ASAP.

UsernameChat · 03/12/2020 13:16

I think you are being a bit unreasonable, as you shouldn't have left it until the last-minute to order something you wanted for a specific date, and if you needed it to arrive by a certain date, it would have been better to contact the seller to ask them if they could meet that date.

TrickorTreacle · 03/12/2020 13:23

1st December box?
24th December box?

What's wrong with just having presents and a stocking on Christmas
Day itself as per usual? Christ almighty!

ferretface · 03/12/2020 13:24

@naemates yes it's rubbish for everyone! There has been a big push on Etsy to offer a more Amazon style model of free shipping and faster delivery times etc but it's difficult for handmade sellers to deliver that.

Depending on what the processing time was I might be tempted to gently let them know that it's caused issues to dispatch late, you may get a seller resolution (partial or complete refund etc) without needing to do anything more as leaving bad feedback is really harmful on Etsy depending on how many items the seller turns over.

naemates · 03/12/2020 13:37

Good to know ferret, will def give the benefit of the doubt and not mention it in the review, but maybe say to her that I'd been expecting it earlier due to Etsy displaying the delivery time so she could add a note on her page if she wanted to. As I said, she only had the 50 sales, so maybe is inexperienced.

I can't believe people think that over a week is last minute! I was quite pleased with myself getting organised early. I fully expect handmade stuff to take longer, and wouldn't have ordered if the misleading date hadn't been there on the page.

Glad I asked!

One bad experience and you are unlikely to use Etsy again? I think that is ridiculous. There are so many people with businesses on Etsy, each one is different, one bad experience doesn't mean that they are all bad.

Message the seller and let them know you haven't received the item, though I would actually give it more time before asking for a refund due to covid-19 delays with RM.

livinlavida · 03/12/2020 16:27

Erm not at all? It said 25th - 27th for dispatch, and it was dispatched in this time. So on time. The fact is hasn't arrived is due to postal
Services being so busy.
It's completely your fault for not ordering earlier - and if you complained to "a real company"
They'd tell you the same. As someone who owns a small business, let me tell you people like yourself are so entitled it is infuriating.
Be more organised 🤷🏻‍♀️

Royal Mail are driving me up the pissing wall. Been tracking a parcel from Etsy myself. Its absolutely flew through Siberia, took a boat trip and then got to Amsterdam airport in a couple of days. As soon as it arrives in the UK I lose tracking info and its taken 5 bloody days and still not got anything. What the hell do they do with this stuff?

user1471565182 · 03/12/2020 17:13

Also I spent 2 months crafting and bleeding making one of my fancy knives to sned my brother and when I go to try deliver it with the post office they treat me like some sort of roadman and refuse to even serve me. Itl be them who are causing the hold up OP.

Sonders · 03/12/2020 17:17

I'd let this one go, as PP has said, a lot of those times are generated by Etsy, and less experienced Etsy sellers like the one you've purchased from often don't even know that's what Etsy are telling their customers.

A bad review can really hurt a small business. What has been a slight disappointment and inconvenience for you, could turn into a real kick in the confidence nuts for the seller and affect their future income.

That's why I save negative reviews for when shit really has hit the fan

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 03/12/2020 18:10

I've been disappointed more times than not by purchases made on Etsy, usually re. quality. I've voted with my debit card and no longer shop there. Unfortunately I've found the same with local/small businesses, hugely over priced/crap quality, so stick to the bigger chain stores, mores the pity.

naemates · 03/12/2020 19:16

Livinlavida it said 25th - 27th for delivery, as I said in my OP, and the seller dispatched on the 27th. User, as above, it wasn't posted on time plus it wasn't Royal Mail that delivered it.

It arrived today, and as I said, I'm happy to let it go, as it seems to be Etsy at fault (though I am tempted to complain at them now!).
