Itchy - washing powder?

Have been suffering with unbearable all over itching at night all week. It's all over and starts in the evening and is stopping me from sleeping. No obvious rash but red spots here and there (this may be where I've scratched though).

Thought it might be a reaction to medication, vitamin D, peri menopause, something more horrendous....

Hoever, rest of the family are now saying they are mildly itchy too so wondering if it's the washing powder. We usually use Aldi Almat but also Ariel, Tesco, Lidl too depending on where we've shopped. This is the first time we have non-bio, bio and colour all Almat.

Has anyone eles had a similar issue with Almat recently or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I have the exact same itching with red spots here and there. Don't use that washing powder though. It's really annoying me 😣😣

Is there any chance that the manufacturers have changed the ingredients recently?

I recommend sticking to just one product and not chopping and changing too often once you've found something that works for you.

Have you started putting the heating on recently? The heating can sometimes cause the humidity levels in your home to drop, I used to end up with dry rashes and was told to put a little bowl of water under my radiator to help with this. Just a suggestion incase it's not the powder.

I had that once (different powder) - we only ever buy one brand now as I was covered from head to foot in a rash, DH couldn't believe it!

Almat is the only washing powder that doesn't give me a rash!
Suffered for ages using ecover and surcare which I thought would be okay because they contain less chemicals.

When my eldest was about 5 i bought Daz washing powder and washed all of the bedding in it.
That night my son wakes up screaming he was covered from head to foot in hives and was scratching like mad.
i avoided Daz for a while and a few months later used it again and when he wore something washed n it once again the hives and scratching came back.
None of the rest of us had a problem with it just him.
That was 18 years ago though and have never bought Daz since and my son wont buy it just in case.
I now stick to the same brand and have not had another problem.

I get a terrible itchy rash from Ariel and anything bio.

Thelnebriati · 02/12/2020 23:44

We get this from Persil, I had to put all our stuff on several long washes with no powder to get rid of it.

@BikeRunSki

I get a terrible itchy rash from Ariel and anything bio.
Bio powder often gets blamed, but it is usually the perfumes, not the enzymes that cause the itching.

If you aren't already doing so I suggest you wash all bedding at 60 degrees.

I can’t use Ariel

I dried my hands on my mums towel and a few hours later it was like I had something crawling under my skin

I always use non bio and never have a problem now

BungleandGeorge · 03/12/2020 00:37

It’s quite unusual to be allergic to washing powder these days as modern machines rinse really well. Is it everywhere? If it’s caused by washing powder the bits not covered with clothes (face, hands) will usually be spared. Is your skin dry? That can cause severe itching

BungleandGeorge · 03/12/2020 00:39

Is there any chance you may have picked up scabies? Hotel stay or similar?

DramaAlpaca · 03/12/2020 00:40

Almat and Ariel are the only ones that don't make me itchy. They have less fragrance than others I've tried. I always use bio, but I do an extra rinse.

nocturnalke · 03/12/2020 00:50

Hi, not sure about Almat as don't use. However about three years ago I had the same intense itching all over you describe. I changed to non bio straight away as my eczema does flare up from time to time. After several weeks of not sleeping and antihistamine not working, I eventually went to the gp. Turns out that I was suffering extreme anxiety from a situation in my previous job, but it presented itself physically through my skin. I was prescribed strong antihastime and had CBT. The itching cleared up but still to this day I cannot use most skin products. I have learnt as well that physical and emotional symptoms are closely linked. Not saying this is what is happening to you but maybe worth ask if anything has happened to you or been feeling anxious recently. Now Its my three month old that keeps me awake at night :) Take care x

I am suffering the same taking antihistamine helps. but I did find online that it’s typical symptom of being peri menopausal. I have found a cold damp facecloth on the effected area the best for instant relief. More scratching causes the itch to move around but if I can cool the area early on it isn’t as bad. Hope this helps x
