Cold & cough no fever

My 1 year old. I put these exact words into google & it came up with the NHS page ‘common colds’

AIBU to assume this is NOT COVID & is exactly that... a common cold. Any other year I wouldn’t bat an eyelid over these symptoms, tis the season after all!

A COVID test doesn’t seem like a pleasant thing to put a 1yo through for no real reason.

AIBU to carry on as normal?

If they have a cough you should get them tested - regardless of whether they have a fever or not. There's absolutely no way to know if it's a cold or covid, especially with a little kid when symptoms are likely to be mild. I take your point about testing a 1 year old though, how much of a ballache would it be to just isolate for a couple of weeks without testing?

ThornAmongstRoses · 01/12/2020 22:59

My 3 year got sent home from childcare today with a runny nose and a cough - also no fever.

I was told he can’t go back until he’s had a Covid test and it’s negative.

I suppose a cough is a symptom...

At my older son’s school they say that even if the child has cold symptoms and a cough they can still go to school, and they only have to go home, isolate and test it they have a fever.

My post isn’t helpful at all Grin

I’m just musing alongside you Smile

@yellowmaoampinball total ball ache in all honesty! Will mean both of us off work, not sure how pay would work but not ideal on top of Christmas. Eldest DD off nursery...

Potentially for what my gut it telling me is a common cold..

Yep DD just 2 has had 4 tests since September, all negative, colds and I guess other viral things.

UsernameSpoosername · 01/12/2020 23:03

@olderthanyouthink oh poor DD, that is just madness isn’t it?

How did she find the tests? Not to bad I hope Flowers

It is of course likely to be a cold but it it isn't and you've carried on as normal with work and nursery then the consequences for someone more vulnerable could be shit. Get the test. And some chocolate buttons delivered for after.

olderthanyouthink · 01/12/2020 23:13

She it's kinda like brushing her teeth on a bad day... not fun for any of us and it takes both of us to do it safely. She's very grumpy with us after Sad didn't even want a cookie last time and she looooves cookies.

Brighterthansunflowers · 01/12/2020 23:16

YABU

A new continuous cough is a symptom of covid. If DC has a new continuous cough it doesn’t matter what your gut says, you all need to isolate either until they have a negative test or for 14 days.

People assuming it’s just a cold and ignoring the rules is one reason why covid is spreading so much

LucozadeHasToBeOriginal · 01/12/2020 23:21

I'm very dubious about the whole 'it doesn't present as cold symptoms'.

We all had it the other week, including the kids (tested positive), just got out of isolation the other day. Fortunately all mild but the majority of my symptoms were that of a cold, and DHs. None of us had a continuous cough. I had a runny nose, was sneezing a lot, a bit of an itchy throat and a banging headache. One of the kids just had a headache for a day and then nothing further.

UsernameSpoosername · 01/12/2020 23:27

See I wouldn’t describe this cough as ‘continuous’ either. It’s more of a tickle, that gets irritated sometimes.

So if she wakes in the night or when she first wakes in the morning & has a bit of a dry throat she’s coughing, but I’m barely noticing it in the day. It’s definitely happening, but not at all frequently.

Her nose is streaming a lot, that is by far the most obvious symptom of anything.

Personally I think it's ridiculous that the criteria for testing children remains the same as adults (cough / fever / anosmia) when it often presents differently with children covid.joinzoe.com/post/back-to-school

It may be a cold in which case you know you are fine, but unless you have had no contact with others in the 48 hrs before DCs symptoms, and plan to isolate until 14 days after the symptoms started, then you should get them a test. That way, if it is positive, test & trace can make sure their contacts know to isolate.

At least any contacts now (if the test is positive) will be finished isolation by Christmas.

Creepertime · 01/12/2020 23:57

I started with a runny nose, sneezing and feeling congested. Then my taste suddenly went. Then a cough started. Covid positive on test.
Test and isolate even though it’s a pain in the arse

Kettlingur · 02/12/2020 00:05

Friend's toddler's only symptom was a runny nose. COVID positive. Test!
