Bloody outdoor Christmas lights!!!

One of the houses opposite mine has put Christmas lights up all over the front of the house - which admittedly looks really pretty.

However, they leave them on all through the night, on one of the flashing settings, and my bedroom is like Blackpool Illuminations Sad

I’ve got continuous bright blue, red, green and white flashes of light coming through my curtains, under my curtains and around the sides of my curtains.

It’s so hard to sleep Sad

This is the 3rd night in a row now, I’m shattered, I’ve already had enough and the thought of this going on for another 4 weeks is killing me.

I know it’s their house to do with as they please....but it’s 22.45pm and surely it’s just considerate towards all the neighbours (I won’t be the only one affected by this) to at least turn your lights off overnight?

Am I being a humbug?

I’m going to have to buy some black out blinds aren’t I...

If nothing else works, this definitely will do the job cheaply:

easyblackout blackout blind with VELCRO® Brand Fastener tape (White, Size 2: 150cm x 135cm) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002WCGBSY/ref=cmswwrcppapifabccAftYFbHE5K7QN?encoding=UTF8&psc=1

After that I’d declare war and snip the wires.

Oh god I hope you’re not my neighbour. Last night DH stayed up all night as he was on call and had some IT techy issue to sort and the night before the hive plug failed and stayed on all night. They are SUPPOSED to be turned off.

Ours are meteor litghts rather than a true flash, so hopefully not as annoying. We have family living over the road, I’m sure they would have mentioned it by now if they were too bright.

Tbh I didn’t go to bed until after midnight? So they would still have been on here at 22:45 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have blackout curtains in the window they’re in and I can’t see the lights through the curtains.

So you can’t ‘enjoy’ them but everyone else can.

Nice 🙄

My neighbour does the same, plus loads of massive blow up things that glow really brightly. I love them, but not at 1 in the morning! She puts hers up on 1st Nov and leaves them up for ages after Christmas....joy!!

DD14 has just come home from hospital after surgery for the takeaway opposite to have blue flashing 'Christmas' lights in their windows all night, awake until gone 1am because a) it was disturbing her b) reminds her of ambulances (obviously no ones fault there) but when I went to ask them if they could be turned off when the shop closes at 11pm apparently I was being 'selfish and ruining the spirit of Christmas'

No winning with anyone here!

Our neighbour has a snowfall effect light and the way it is positioned it shines into my bedroom making spots of light cascade on my bedroom ceiling goes on for hours. I have to stuff fabric across the top of my curtain rail to block it out. We don't get on so there is no point in asking him to turn it off earlier.

Yanbu to hate it,Yabu for not asking them to turn them off at night!!
Go and tell them!!

Last night they were on 11pm so a sight improvement.

I wouldn’t mind if they just left it on the static setting but there’s just no need though for flashing lights to be going on until so late at night that they can’t even see themselves!!!

What’s the point?!

Have you considered closing your eyes?

@Henio

They shouldn't be leaving them on when they go to bed anyway, massive fire hazard

Are there no rules, similar to noise, covering lights? Air rifle comes to mind otherwise.

Well, obviously not, OP has been lying there with her eyes wide open for hours on end wondering why she can't get to sleep.

What’s the point?!

It's Christmas. It's dark out from about 4 o'clock. They're a little harmless seasonal jollity.

If you can't find a sleep mask, OP, how about finding a tube sock and laying it across your eyes.

It's sunset at 4, even if someone is not not home until 6 (or later) then 9 is still late enough.

Not harmless if they’re affecting someone’s sleep.

I’d be cutting wires too.

Sorry but during the day a pair of head trimmers and the wires would be snipped, stuff that for a carry on... Nothing wrong with pretty lights but people got to sleep esp if they work.. So bah humbug to ignorant selfish neighbours!

Cutting wires?
Rifles?

This is madness.

Well, obviously not, OP has been lying there with her eyes wide open for hours on end wondering why she can't get to sleep.
She needs to put a tube sock over her eyes and unclench.

I live on a main street close to a hospital, and there is general traffic, ambulances, police cars, fire department vehicles, and once a week streets and san trucks up and down all night every night, sirens blaring, lights flashing. In a few weeks we will regularly have snow ploughs plying the streets periodically at night. My cat often spends her nights chasing the spots of light that rotate around my bedroom walls.

Some of you don't know you're born.

...it’s sad that some people want to suck the joy out of everything.
It's more than sad. It's terrifying that there are seemingly so many very disproportionately angry people at large.

Well, presumably you chose to live near a hospital, knowing what that would mean?

This year more than any we need a bit of joy in our lives, it’s sad that some people want to suck the joy out of everything

At 2 o’ clock in the morning? Seriously, what’s wrong with just turning them off over night?

I have outside lights. I bought a timer 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn’t mind if they just left it on the static setting but there’s just no need though for flashing lights to be going on until so late at night that they can’t even see themselves!!!

Yes! The lights I could cope with, it was the flashing. Our neighbours ones were constantly changing too. You’d just get used to a certain sequence and be drifting off and they’d change.

lol @ people who complain about others sucking the joy out of Christmas... Are people who work not allowed sleep? Isn't that not sucking the joy out their life being deprived sleep, why is it a problem to just turn the lights out at a reasonable hour

I chose a location I could afford. My first choice would have been to stay in the house I had to sell due to divorce.

Presumably you all chose to live in a built-up area knowing full well that you had neighbours and that Christmas is celebrated in many ways by people in the UK, including putting up outdoor Christmas lights for a relatively brief period every year?

There is something wrong in your lives if you really can't figure out simple and cheap solutions to this issue and prefer to sit there getting more and more furious night after night. Getting to sleep is as simple as buying a cheap Poundland sleep mask or putting a tube sock over your eyes. You live near other people - deal with it sensibly.
