AIBU to ask Do I need A Landline?

Dear All, My Broadband contract with BT is about to run out and I wanted to switch to EE for a fibre, faster speed deal. It comes with 20GB additional data for EE mobiles which my teenage daughter could use as she never has enough data! But it means I have to give up my landline. I'm 52 so the thought of giving up my landline feels like a big step! But really I'm wondering why do I have it anyhow? Only 2 people generally ring me on it; my Mum and also my neighbour so she knows I'm home and can pop round for coffee (preCovid!) or has run out / needs to borrow something. I have unlimited calls on my mobile so I always use this and friends usually call or message me on this. The mobile signal's not always brilliant but ok. I never really use the landline to make calls as it costs money and I have free calls on my mobile. My Mum and neighbour also have free unlimited calls so it won't cost them anymore to call me on my mobile. I think tbh I'm being a bit old fashioned and should move with the times and let the landline go. What do you think I should do? Are there any good reasons for keeping it? I asked the man at EE and he said he didn't know anyone with a landline which made me feel quite old! Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks Mumsnetters :)

I have a landline for my broadband but don’t own a handset for it or know the number. It’s never been an issue. Well, it was only an issue when I first moved in and Openreach and Sky were fucking about failing to connect me, because they wanted me to test the line. But I refused to buy a handset just because they were incompetent.

YewandOak · 01/12/2020 21:42

I still have a landline. Doesn't cost me any extra with my broadband. I get free calls on it too.
You never know if or when your mobile might die/get lost. Always handy to have a backup
(I'm 56 if that makes any difference)

mogtheexcellent · 01/12/2020 21:43

I lose my mobile at least once a day. I need my landline to find it.

MeringueCloud · 01/12/2020 21:44

Useful in a powercut.

Freddiefox · 01/12/2020 21:44

We have a landline as it’s part of the package.
Have no phone for it or know the number. The handset broke about 4 years ago. Not needed it since.

How? Most need a plug socket to be useable.
DelphineWalsh · 01/12/2020 21:47

Haven't had a landline for over a decade.

Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2020 21:47

I have one because I think I have to have it for Sky. But I like having it as people can leave messages if my mobile has no signal or has died or whatever.

Thanks everyone for the replies - tbh I'm still undecided however appreciate your answers and everyone taking the time to reply - I think I'll sleep on it and decide tomorrow :)

I also scrapped having a landline ages ago. I think 2011 was last time I had one?

Changi · 01/12/2020 22:04

We have one and use it. It's cheaper than using a mobile and the connection is more reliable too.

My mum had a 5 day power cut a few years ago. She was the only one of her neighbours that had a landline with an wired phone. The mobile masts had no power so she was the only household locally that could use the phone.

I keep a landline and wired phone just in case something like that happens here. It's very unlikely but it is a remote possibility.

Ragwort · 01/12/2020 22:05

I use my landline regularly, I dislike the expectation that I have to call people on their mobile number as that can be expensive (depending on your package) & not everyone uses a mobile. I also dislike 'chatting" on a mobile, I only use it for very quick calls if I am out - and mobile reception where I live is really poor.

But I acknowledge I am probably hopelessly old fashioned Grin.

lachy · 01/12/2020 22:07

We have a landline, but only because it was part of the cable package.

No one ever rings us on it, we don't need it, but I'm sure it was cheaper to have it as part of the package than to not have it.

Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2020 22:09

I do like ringing people on their landline from mine occasionally. No signal cutting out, no delay no both talking at once etc.

MaryShelleysDracula · 01/12/2020 22:12

I have a landline because DH's job requires (and pays a set amount into his wages towards) one. It's a £10 corded handset and cradle hidden behind my Sky Box. I like having it for when I lose my mobile and am alone in the house so he can't call me, in case of fire (No fucking idea why, it's not upstairs where we'd be overnight when fire is most likely to break out but I don't take my phone upstairs and keep meaning to get a 2 handset cordless to have one by the bed, never happened) and in case of the apocalypse when all mobile signals and electrics go down. Fuck knows who I'd call though, I only know people with mobiles or landlines whose numbers I don't know except my dad and I'm sure he'd hotfoot it round here anyway in that case. You're welcome for my most helpful input!

Becca19962014 · 01/12/2020 22:13

If you live somewhere with a not very good signal, keep your landline. When our mobile masts were "updated" we had days of no signal, still happens regularly. Now you're lucky to get a single bar, some areas there's nothing not even 2g never mind 3/4.

5g isn't backwards compatible and there will be areas now that struggle that won't have mobile signal.

MeringueCloud · 01/12/2020 22:14

randomchap yes! Relying on mobiles only is a step backwards!

(It needs to be a wired phone, curly flex/lead type of thing)

1Morewineplease · 01/12/2020 22:19

We generally use a landline at home as our signal isn't great.
I really hate having to shout through a mobile or having to move from room to room and end up having to redial.

The sound is better on a landline too.
