Bloody Elf turns up in a balloon now

I know IABU and a curmudgeon but why does everything have to be such an exhibition at Christmas? Elves can't just appear this year they have to float from Lapland in a balloon with a present Confused I know, I know if you don't like it don't do it. That's fine but I do feel sorry for the kids whose parents don't have £15 to spend on an elf balloon and then a present on top just because it's the first of December. I thought this year might make us all step back and maybe consider a simpler celebration of Christmas but no, the social media onslaught of who can be the most ostentatious Christmas fanatic is worse than ever. I hate it.

I have a couple of Facebook friends who have elves, and I enjoy the pictures immensely (disappointingly neither have posted yet this year).
One in particular is extremely dedicated, she has 3 elves, one for each child, and last year they did arrive each with "I'm back childname" balloons, and laden down with advent calendars and selection boxes. Yes, it's a bit tacky and OTT, but that's what makes it fun! Christmas is a bit tacky and OTT and long may it last.

I don't want my own elf though. I always find the way they don't have hands or feet slightly unsettling.

formerbabe · 01/12/2020 14:48

I own my home and my dd bloody loves her elf and I waste lots of time every day planning its next move...oh and I haven't worked in eleven yearsGrin

BashfulClam · 01/12/2020 14:48

He’s to stay in the balloon for 2 weeks he’s in quarantine.

Bitchysideisouttoplay · 01/12/2020 14:50

Our elf did not arrive by balloon it just appeared over night in a quarinetine jar. My DSis made me laugh she had the bright idea to buy a giant balloon for the elf to arrive with the advent calendars. Arranged to collect the balloon on the school run and put it in her boot, seems like a well thought out plan. Except she didnt check how big this balloon was it too up the whole backseat of the car, so she ended up frantically calling her DH who luckily had a day off to collect the kids whilst she tried to hide tha balloon. Yes I laughed at her and told her that's what happens when she has a bright bloody idea 🤣🤣

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

Blimey I started the thread and I rent.

That’s the thing about looking down on others. You’ll never be at the top. Try not to be so judgemental in future if you don’t like it I suppose. 🤷🏻‍♀️

No, I don't mind, I found it quite funny. I'll probably just keep being judgemental. I know you won't judge me for that, being the saintly person you are.

Look at the snobs on this thread.

Let people do what they want and carry on thinking you're superior because your Christmas is sooooo much simpler and less materialistic. You are clearly much better people, give yourself a pat on the back.

Ellathechristmasfairy20 · 01/12/2020 15:00

I love the elf, my kid loves the elf, I don’t have Facebook so I don’t post the elf’s activities, I didn’t know you could get an elf in a balloon! I would be all over that. I would hate to be middle class, so much angst about what is considered tasteful or not, it’s a bit of fun, lighten up.

EggBobbin · 01/12/2020 15:01

My DD is 5 and told me this year there’s an elf at her daddy’s house and it might tell Santa not to bring her any presents. I wasn’t sure how serious she was so I assured her the elf would always give her a chance to be good again and if it was really worrying her I could talk to daddy about it if she’d like?

She very kindly and patiently explained ‘its ok mummy he can’t move by his self because he’s just a little toy. I think my daddy moves him while I’m asleep to be silly’ Grin So pleased she cleared that up!

jessstan1 · 01/12/2020 15:05

I quite agree, it's too ridiculous. Honestly, if I was a small child I'd find the elf quite scary.

ProudAuntie76 · 01/12/2020 15:05

Ohhhhhhh so this is why my nieces had an elf in a balloon in their lounge this morning! Genuinely didn’t realise this was a thing until...well...NOW.

Pics of elf balloon and newly dressed door all over the socials. Sis admits she hates it all but feels obliged. Wondering if she’s on this thread Blush.

EggBobbin · 01/12/2020 15:05

Hmm- should I contact her dad and query the class values he’s setting? We shop at Waitrose here and pronounce croissant the french way, I don’t want him fucking all that pretension up...

Oh and sis and BIL are VERY middle class. But they do live in the North (Cheshire).

RedToothBrush · 01/12/2020 15:07

Fuck this shit.

Life is too fucking short.

We have Christmas trees and lights not evil bastard elves in our house.

newbie222 · 01/12/2020 15:08

I don’t care if you do the elf or if you don’t buy those who waste energy bitching and whining about those who do it

Risotto4tea · 01/12/2020 15:12

I have an elf and 2 years ago in arrived in a balloon like this, I must have been ahead of the trend! My kids love it and now my eldest is a none believer, she does it for me and loves keeping the magic going. It's a bit of fun you only get a few years of your kids being little and enjoying this stuff so why not.
Oh and I have a mortgage

KodakNancyEurope · 01/12/2020 15:13

When did it stop just being “December”?

Fuck me, is an advent calendar not enough??

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 01/12/2020 15:15

@LobsterRavioli that's one of the most nasty condescending comments I've read on here. Yuck.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/12/2020 15:15

DS: that's the elf on the shelf. He comes alive when it's nighttime.
Me: Oh right, shall we have one on our house?
DS: NO!! It comes alive when it's night time!!

Sorted. My 5 yo rocks. Elf sucks.

TheKeatingFive · 01/12/2020 15:17

Honestly, if I was a small child I'd find the elf quite scary.

No more scary than Santa surely? And while some do find Santa scary, it certainly doesn't stop everyone else.

Homebody12 · 01/12/2020 15:18

@Waxonwaxoff0 the only people who think they are superior are the ones posting on social media everyday. It’s performance parenting. Enjoy your kids and make them happy, stop telling your 300 Facebook friends about it.
