How often do you do your laundry?

Need some help from the Mumsnet brigade. Dh and I were taking this evening about our family laundry. There is only 4 of us so not a huge household. All sports etc cancelled at the moment so in theory that should reduce the load. We wash.all.the.time. At least a load a day. We live in an apartment so not a huge amount of space. We do have a drier but use it mainly for things like sheets and towels. My question is how do you guys do your laundry? A designated day where most of it gets done then put drying racks etc away until the same day next week? One load a day? I feel that there is are permanent drying racks everywhere and it’s driving me insane. Where am I going wrong?

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

Line of conception I wear jeans for months without washing them Halo
Blimey, I'm feeling inadequate now Grin Seriously, the washing of clothes as frequently as people are saying, I just can't do it. It's bad for the fabrics, which shed plastic anyway during the washing process, and bad for the environment just due to the use of elextricity resources and water.

Can we start taking green issues more seriously and consider the damage we are doing to the planet?

Monday lights
Tuesday darks
Wednesday bedding
Thursday towels
Friday darks or lights. depends on time of year, we wear lighter clothes in summer dark in winter
Saturday whites (school shirts etc)
Sunday one big pile of ironing

Laundry dries either outdoors or on airer next to dehumidifier. I try to tumble only in an emergency.

Although with jeans we try to get another wear out of them. "Of course you should. Jeans don't get dirty. They can be and should be worn at least twice, possibly even 3 times.
Jeans do get dirty, of course they do - how odd that you would think they don't. As casual clothes they're what we'd choose to do daily things like dog walk in the fields, gardening, etc. There's always some mud on them somewhere. Not to mention a pandemic!
Hope that helps.

One load a day at the very least for us!
Have a teenager so uniform, husband gets filthy at work and then have toddler and baby so multiple clothe, sheet changes etc ! It's constant!!
I am lucky in that I actually love ironing lol

I live by myself, and generally do one load a week - alternate bed linen & towels on hot wash, then clothes the other week on a cooler wash.
Communal laundry for the apartment block - I think the machines are larger capacity than most machines. I don't use the driers, but do have a spin drier to speed the drying process.

TheSandman · 02/12/2020 00:39

Four of us in the house and I have the machine on at least twice a day. Once for bedding tea towels or whatever needs done and then the machine is left open and set up in the afternoon for when kids come home from school, and adults get home from work - one by one as arrive home we get changed and day clothes go straight into washing machine. My wife is NHS worker so when covid started we started doing this.

I have a walk in drying room with dehumidifier so uniforms are clean and dry and warm for next day. It's a sausage factory but it works.

@Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese thanks for that, I think I can accept an extra £5 ish a month.

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland thanks for the tip, I'll bear that in mind :-)

We are a family of 3.

We have no space for a dryer so have a drying rack infront of the radiator in the living room.

I do a small load a day- i only separate whites everything gets thrown in together.
Then on a Friday dds white shirts and any white t-shirts we have worn.
Then dds and DWs uniforms
Then sheets on a Sunday.

Sometimes very rarely I have no washing, so the drying rack gets folded down and wheeled out of the way.

BringBiscuits · 02/12/2020 09:16

In normal times we would wash daily (5of us) but no sports at minute so that’s really reduced washload.
Me and DH wfh. Kids off school at the minute isolating so rewearing stuff loads more (plus not seeing anyone or going anywhere) and I have an extra hour or two in my day that isn’t spent moving washing around!
Have still no sense of smell after Covid so finding it difficult to tell if stuff is smelling dirty though so will probably slip back to normal habits once in the normal life routine again.

GrolliffetheDragon · 02/12/2020 10:40

A couple of times a week. I don't have a dryer so have to try and get things dry before putting another load on, so at this time of year it's a constant battle to keep up with the washing.

Bananalanacake · 02/12/2020 11:23

Family of 4, 4 or 5 loads a week. Am keen on wearing clothes several times before they need a wash, only my underpants go in the wash after a single wear. My DC can wear tops and trousers twice, we're in Germany so no uniform to worry about. Towels go in the wash after a week, tea towels more often but I have loads of them.

Baaaahhhhh · 02/12/2020 11:53

As casual clothes they're what we'd choose to do daily things like dog walk in the fields, gardening, etc. There's always some mud on them somewhere

Meh, I just brush it off......a little bit of mud never hurt anyone.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/12/2020 11:59

@alibongo5

How the hell does everyone find the time to do this much washing!?
It's mad isn't it?! How does a family generate enough washing to have to do 3 loads a day? No wonder our planet's buggered.
VinylDetective · 02/12/2020 12:05

Two of us. Towels are washed weekly, bed linen fortnightly. I also do one coloured and one white load every week, so three/four loads a week. Everything goes in the tumble dryer in the winter, I detest washing hanging around.

Sonofapizzaman · 02/12/2020 12:09

Laundry is such a sticking point in our house.

There’s always a massive MASSIVE pile to be done but we only have a pulley which most of the time takes two days to dry things so by the time a load is dry at least two or more have built up. We could do with a clothes horse too but just no space and they’re not great for houses either.

I only use the tumble drier for sheets, towels, socks and my husbands work stuff.

It’s a huge problem in our house.

QueenPaws · 02/12/2020 12:12

Single, maybe 2-3 loads a week
I don't separate stuff, bedding is super king so it takes up a fair bit of room but I'll change the bottom sheet and pillowcases and flip the duvet
Cloth pads but they don't take up much room (rinse wash then add other laundry)
