Renting on housing benefit?

Hello (sorry not sure what thread to post this in)

I’ve been living in my mums house for the past two years. I took over rent but essentially it is here. She has just finished the relationship on domestic grounds and is coming back here. That’s fine. Her house with my little brother. (I’ve never seen it as my house anyway)

My partners parents literally just signed the papers for selling their house so my option is to live in a small double room with my 6 month old and partner or move out. I’m on maternity and my partner was made redundant so he’s set up his own company. This meaning we don’t have complete stable income and universal credits paying the rest.

Will be for 6 months claiming. I really don’t want to but we’ve been left with no choice.

Has anyone moved and changed their claim to renters also?
Anyone able to move into a flat on universal?
I don’t know how to prove I earn 36k a year?

Thanks

Hi all, looking for some advice also.
I’m 26 y/o living in Greenwich Borough, have no family in the UK and am in a house share (my rent is £500) a month, am single and have recently found out I am pregnant. My housemates won’t want a baby living in the house with us so I will have to look for alternative accommodation. The only thing is I won’t be able to afford it.. I am on £33000 a year so I am not sure if or how much housing benefit or support I would be entitled to. I would probably go part time which would bring my salary down to £28000 eventually but any support or advice appreciated ladies thank you x

Hi, I’m a landlord and my tenants don’t have the required affordability ratio so have a guarantor. They are also in receipt of benefits too.

It personally isn’t an issue for me at all, they’re very nice and have paid their rent on time always.

It's ridiculous trying to rent a house in this country atm. You have to practically audition with introductory letters etc . I hope the tide changes soon and it returns to how it was before the pandemic. Too many lazy greedy rich horrible landlords out there atm.

@Pumpkinx3x: Moving on UC is fairly straightforward from the UC point of view. You'll just need to tell them the details of your new property and provide a copy of the new tenancy agreement. Bear in mind that any change in rent will be effective for the whole of the assessment period in which you move, so if the rent is higher and you move near the end of the period, you get the higher rate for the whole month.

@Jasmin1995

However, bear in mind that you will only be allowed rent up to the maximum local housing allowance for a 2-bed property in the area you move to. You can find this easily online.

Proving your pre-maternity pay income could be done by providing a copy of your contract of employment.

@Jasmin1995, if you use one of the online benefit calculators (I think entitledto is the most user friendly) you'll be able to work out what your UC entitlement would be for all eventualities.

Thank you all so much for your advice! I was worried that because my salary isn’t considered low (but definitely too low to rent by myself and raise a baby) would I even be entitled to anything.
I couldn’t find anything on the salary cap or cut off point online, do they exist?

Do a benefits check on Turn2Us using a standard rent in your area for a one bed flat - that will tell you how much (if anything) you would be entitled to under UC

@LakieLady - pumpkinx3x posted a year ago, and had no replies.

@Jasmin1995 - Independent living in Greenwich may be hard to find on your income. Have you considered moving away?

@EuromamaAussiekids - there are still affordable properties for rent in the UK, just not in London and the SE.
